High eroticism pairs with high morality

One of the best movies in the last two decades of American cinematography.
The way Western Europe was depicted, the influence of the Soviet Union over the politics in these countries and the attitude of common people towards this influence - speaking from personal experience - is perfectly correct. The characters, especially secondary ones, are very real without being boring or depressive. The screenplay is as well written as the book and definitely easier digested.
If you like movies that are not easily forgotten the day after you've seen them - try to get this one. You'll have few laughs, few tears and new subject to discuss with your friends or at the next meeting of a local high-brow society.

Not enough good things can be said about this miniseries

The first episode in this HBO miniseries premiered on Sunday, September 9, 2001, and I think all of us watched the next eight episodes with a different outlook. This isn't so much a movie as it is an experience. You really get to know the men of Easy Company. You're with them through basic training, through D-Day, through the drive to Berlin, and even after the war ends on April 7, 1945. You come to care about them, which is a damn rare thing to say about most American films today! Watching the firemen and policemen on 9/11 and seeing our troops in Afghanistan gave this movie a new relevance. They were no different than the men who joined the army in 1941, ordinary men who did extraordinary things. In watching this movie, I felt I was celebrating our heroes of today as well as those of sixty years ago. Any one of us can rise to the challenge before us and be heroes, whether we think we can or not. "Band of Brothers" reinforces that message, and that's why it's worth watching over and over again. P.S., don't forget to read the book!

Terrifyingly real, hauntingly sad

Even after James Cameron released his version of Titanic, it still didn't match up to A Night To Remember. One of the best things about this movie is it catches the PANIC and MOODS of the passengers a lot better than JC's movie. Don't be at all put off by the age of this film, even by our standards today this is still an historically accurate film.
The Black and White print of the film also adds to the film's enjoyment.I still get shivers when the lights go out on board ship with the stern rising up out of the water.I must admit I was a little disappointed with this film's transfer as well.I don't feel it lived up to its value.
As for this DVD, the behind-the-scenes featurette is interesting but the audio commentary seemed ordinary. For Two Titanic historians, I would have thought we would have been given some better background to what was real/true and what was fake/untrue in the movie. I would have also liked an updated commentary in relation to JC's Titanic since it borrowed heavily from this movie.

Sepia period technicolor atmosphere

The DVD copy, the latest version, remastered and with Dolby sound is well worth a revisit. I can't remember seeing this film before although my mother knows the exact cinema in Dalston Junction London where I was first exposed to The Wizard of Oz. This is a beautiful film looking at it from a visual art perspective.
In 1939 the Dust Bowl period was drawing to an end, and Kansas being one of the States effected by this catastrophe is the anchor point of Wizard. I was surprised by the opening, not black and white, but in sepia, even the MGM logo. Now I realize I was looking at the remastered version, but there is hardly any sign of scratches or dust, in fact just take a clip, have it framed and the scenes would make a beautiful print. AVCC, Universal City, did the computer work, and really produced a work of art from a work of art.
It is obvious that the farm scenes are on a stage but because of this with the desolate background reflecting the flattened earth caused by the Dust Bowl, and the stagey voices, the whole atmosphere of that period with the sepia photography does capture a period of hopelessness. It's obvious that Harold Rosson the cinematographer knew the technical stuff, and Cedric Gibbons the art director was skilled in capturing the moment. The trees for example are bent due to the wind, and of course have no leaves on them. Toto the dog, when he runs, kicks up the dust on the track, the whole effect creating the dry, dusty situation in Kansas that the tenant farmers were experiencing.
At this time in the thirties the Farm Security Administration employed photographers to travel around the States to record the plight of the American people trying to build a new life for themselves. Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans were just two of the photographers and their images are very famous. Looking at the farm houses in their prints, they appear very similar to the sepia scenes in The Wizard of OZ. Also looking at the farmers and the laborers, their clothes and attitudes, all are captured in this movie.
Off course the sepia effect isn't used just to show this depressive time, the other reason is to create a startling contrast that jump starts us into the technicolor scenes. Technicolor a three-color process was developed in 1932, and even today with so much progress in film and chemicals, technicolor takes a lot of beating when it comes to vivid saturated colors. The moment Dorothy opens her door outwards in her gloomy house still photographed in sepia, the technicolor shot of the garden, with the sunflowers, the daisies, the green fertile hills, blue sky and pond with the white bridge, completely takes the audience by surprise, a most pleasing experience.
Without technicolor we would have no yellow brick road, Elton John would still be hunting for words for a catchy tune, and Michael Jackson would have moonwalked in another scene for his Billie Jean MTV video. Yes, we have to say thanks to The Wizard of Oz, where would we be without you.
Judy Garland was only sixteen when she made this film, but by then she was a already a veteran, The Wizard of OZ being her fifteenth film. Unfortunately due to anorexia and the usual "uppers and downers," most of her life existed in a sepia cloud.

I finally got to see this one-WOW! What a movie!

When The Passion was released in theatres many months ago, I either had to work or when I went to the theatre found out that the theatre had sold out.

So I went to my local Costco and bought the movie and watched it. All I can say is WOW---this is an awesome movie. Gory yes. But what do you think a crucifixion is, a party?

All christians should buy this movie. It will make you feel closer to God and help you appreciate just what Jesus Christ did for all of us.

Thank you Mel Gibson for a outstanding movie!

Go Chako!

This is a very funny three episode story about the girls of the East Oizumi Academy Cosplay Association. I do not know if there are such clubs in schools but this anime so yay, right?
There are a couple of things which will either stop you dead, or make you immediately want this DVD. Number one: with all the cute girls involved there are some views of underwear (almost a given in anime). Number two: there is also brief nudity, of the mild sort, in my opinion. Number three: one of the new members recruited really *likes* young girls. This is played for laughs and I didn't find it offensive; it was fodder for some very funny situations. Actually, I am thankful that the Japanese have a different view and it is refreshing to see a female perv for balance. The perv girl does learn a tiny life lesson in the second episode : ) The DVD is suggested for 17 plus, which may be just about right, depending on your standards. I think this falls into a gray area between an R rating and PG-13. You have been warned, however. My advice is to read more detailed reviews at and other websites.
Although extras are not the best reason to purchase a title, there are some annotated sketches, Cosplay Identification 101 to help identify some of the costumes in the episodes, and clean closing, as well as a Japanese opening. The opening theme is bouncy and fun; however, I prefer the closing theme, The Cosplay Marching Song as performed by the Japanese voice actors. It is one of my favorite anime themes now. Photos of real cosplayers are shown at the end of each episode.
This is a highly amusing kind of whacko anime and has very memorable characters. The anime does leave questions(some of them huge questions) unanswered and the strong possibility of more adventures to follow. I fervently hope the series is continued. Five stars-but I will remove one if I don't see more episodes forthcoming.
