ziggy played guitar

To give you some idea that people's ideas differ, I found this Wes Anderson's best movie. It's like a little Roald Dahl, a little the Graduate, a little Moby Dick, and a million other things. I could go in to more detail, but I would rather just suggest watching it with an open mind. I read some other reviews, and I don't know what the hell they're thinking.
Plus the music is awesome.

The Wild Blue Yonder

He has melted viewers' hearts, and from this day forth, he will spread his buttery justice over their DVD players' every nook and cranny. He is the Tick, the mysterious and insane crime fighter who will teach the forces of evil the Lesson... of Metcalfe. (Don't ask, it's a series in-joke)
Mild-mannered accountant Arthur (David Burke) quits his job in order to don a spandex moth suit and fight crime. When he's attacked by inept Communist agents, he's suddenly rescued by... the Tick (Patrick Warburton), a dimwitted innocent who lives in a world of his own. Reluctantly recruited by the Tick as a sidekick, Arthur accompanies his bizarre, superhuman friend through a strange array of crime-fighting scenarios
With the wannabe Latin lover Batmanuel (Nestor Carbonell) and patriotic amazon Captain Liberty (Liz Vassey), the Tick attacks the eccentric evil of the world: fire-spewing Apocalypse Cow, 112-year-old supervillain The Terror, formerly pudgy ballerina Destroyo, Arthur's relatives, and robots who are trying to kill Jimmy Carter. In the meantime, Our Heroes have to deal with dogs, mixed dating (superhero/ordinary person), porn shoots, Captain Liberty accidently killing the poorly-named celebrity-superhero Immortal (in the sack, no less!), the snobby League of Heroes, and the Tick's search for his true identity.
It doesn't get much goofier than "Tick," which spoofs the sort of comic book heroes like Superman and Batman. The villains are over-the-top (check out Destroyo's tanklike exoskeleton), the heroes are more often insane than not, and sidekicks form little clubs to complain about how their heroes treat them. The writing is full of tortured metaphors and strange scenarios (the scene where Captain Liberty and Batmanuel try to explain the Facts of Life to the Tick is priceless -- "blah blah blah").
He's the tiny diamond in a sea of rhinestones, a peach in a barrel of bad apples; Patrick Warburton is outrageously funny as he rolls off the corniest and dumbest dialogue imaginable ("A secret message... from my teeth!") without cracking the tiniest smile. Burke serves as the hapless brain Arthur; Carbonell is quite entertaining as the womanizing Batmanuel, who only fights crime once in the whole series. And Vassey is fantastic as a frustrated 21st-century Wonder Woman who sometimes seems to be the only really sane one there.
All too short and all too sweet, "The Tick" wasn't given the long life on television that it deserved. However, fans can now enjoy the nine hysterical episodes of madness, mayhem, Metcalfe, and steaming hot cups of justice. Long live the Big Blue Lug.

Classic John Milius = a great flick!

I think this fantasy adventure was really well done. As others have commented, the cinematography (filmed entirely on location in Spain) and musical score push this movie over the top. Also, I thought the acting was actually pretty good (I'm not saying Arnold should get an Oscar, but in my mind, Conan IS a bit stiff and stoic). The Wizard character provides some comedic moments, but in general "Conan The Barbarian" takes it self pretty seriously, which I like. Not much cheese here. Just plenty of steel on steel (and steel on necks...).
My main issue is not with the movie, but with the DVD release. It is pretty obvious that the studio didn't spend much time on this DVD release. The transfer is a bit grainy and the compression suffers a bit in places.

A Film That Will Make You Want To Write Metafore

The other day I had to watch this movie for my Italian class. The movie was fabulous. In the beginning of the film I felt bad for Mario (brilliantly acted by Massimo Troisi), he just seemed so awkward, and because he didn't like fishing, it seemed like he was a failure to his father and the rest of the village. This begins to change when Mario becomes a postman, delivering mail to the Chilean love poet Pablo Neruda. Mario and Neruda develop a great friendship + Mario becomes more confident and falls in love. I had heard very good things about this movie, but watching it was a fabulous experience + it was better than I expected.
Today in Italian, we watched an interview with the director and the TV special about Neruda that are included on the DVD. I didn't know, while watching the film, that the star Massimo Troisi was dying during filming. Learning that he was holding on to life just to complete this film, made it all the more special and sad. I also learned that the actor who played Neruda (Philippe Noiret) acted in French and was later dubbed into Italian. I thought that was a really interesting fact.
All in all this is a great film. It will make you cry. It will make you want to read Neruda's poetry, and even more so, it will make you want to write poetry of your own.

laughing all the way to hell

Unlike many other early John Waters fans, I have not been disappointed with his most recent efforts. Though perhaps not as perverse as Pink Flamingoes, as psychotic as Female Trouble or as jaw-droppingly appalling as Desperate Living, Cecil B. Demented is a hilarious, smart and even political film about a band of cinema terrorists (The Sprocketholes) who aim to overthrow Hollywood. Melanie Griffith is absolutely perfect as Honey Whitlock, an aging Hollywood starlet, who is kidnapped by the group and forced to star in their Guerrilla-style film "Raving Beauty." Loaded with characters that only Waters could dream up (an ex-porn star gone celibate for cinema, a male hairdresser who's ashamed of his heterosexuality), killer lines ("before I was a drug addict, I had so many problems; now I just have one - drugs!"), oddball cameos (Rikki Lake as Honey Whitlock's assistant, the spectacular Mink Stole - one of the original Dreamlanders - who dies of a heart attack after Cecil kidnaps Honey, Patty Hearst as a Sprockethole's mother, Kevin Nealon as Forrest Gump in the sequel "Gump Again") and overall fabulous costumes and style, Cecil B. is not to be missed. Where else are you going to find references to Fassbinder, Hershcell Gordon Lewis and Mel Gibson's balls in the span of an hour and a half?

Pink Floyd - The Wall - movie DVD cover picture

although the wall is probably my least favorite album made during the period in which pink floyd was roger waters, david gilmour, rick wright, and nick mason, the movie went great with the music. roger waters is one crazy mofo...he destroyed the band...the final cut, pink floy'd final album with roger waters, proves this, as it was comprised entirely of songs written by roger waters, most of which had been discarded by the band during the recording of the wall. go figure.

You can watch it over and over

I'm 23 and have enjoyed this movie since I was 11. I lost count of how many times I've seen it. It is the funniest movie ever made. Everyone, no matter how young or old, should at least see it once. It is full of comedies, surprises, and romance. I wish movies nowadays are similar to this movie. What more can I say, except go and get the movie to view it. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Best Movie sequal EVER

I thought Final Destination was one of the best movies that I had ever seen...until I saw Final Destination 2 which, if you can believe it, was even better than the first one! It constantly has you on the edge of your seat and just when you think it is not possible, it gets better!

Johnny Depp is HYSTERICAL!!!

If the roll of Capyain Jack Sparrow wasn't written for Johnny Depp, then it should have been! I can't imagine anyone else playing that character. Sharp and witty, fun and full of energy, Depp adds the perfect combination of brevity and brawn. Don't miss this remarkable film from the only studio with the means to make it worth your while - Disney does it again!!! A sequel will have to do quite a bit to top this masterpiece, but you have my blessing to try.
