Oldie, but goodie!

I' m only 26 so I wasn't even born when "What's Happening" was on TV, but I use to catch re-runs a few years back. I just had to have this to own and enjoy whenever I want to. It's still funny over 25 years later! Dee is too much! Even my 7 year old son watches and laughs along with me! They don't make shows like this anymore!! I enjoyed every episode on every disc!!

This 1959 adaptation of the Greek myth thrilled me.It is quite rare that I am entertained by books turned into movies. Even though the setting (in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil at Carnival)undeniably differs from the original, I truly admire this film.

This movie is so riveting, I had to go back to the theater 4 times to see it to make sure that this was really in a movie! From the first scene to the last, the audience is taken on a roller coaster that is going backwards! People are getting shot, stabbed, beaten and molested all OVER the place. With stars like John Travolta, Samuel Jackson, Harvey Keitel, Bruce Willis, and even a cameo by Quentin himself, this movie SIZZLES from second to second. Travolta is a hit man for Ving Rames' character and also a heroin addict. When he takes Ving's girlfriend, played by the sexy Uma Thurman, out to dinner as a favor and she OD's on his heroin thinking it's cocaine-O MY GOSH-what happen's then and throughout the movie is AWESOME! Keitel as the dutyful "cleaner"(didn't he do that in another movie with Bridget Fonda?) is GREAT. I can't stress how riveting this movie is---YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT! Definately NOT for the faint hearted(no pun intended) or kiddies! Quentin, you a one twisted but totally cool DUDE!

Beautiful and hypnotic...

I remember when I was a child and this film was on television. Even the beginning with the blood dripping on the screen with the hypnotizing music told me this was going to be scary. I was mesmorized by everything I could see and hear, and it was quite scary, but also funny enough to not take it too seriously. I was probably around 10 and never forgot this film. I can't quite put my finger on it, but you have to see this film to understand the scary undertones, when you see the outside sequences with a perfect score, it sends chills sometimes, and the professor and Alfred, they were perfectly cast (yes, even though it was Roman's film, he was perfect in his role, innocent, curious and sweet). It had a number of eye openers for me, as the starring of breasts, which honestly, as men, we all do sometimes, and to find out what a gay person was. That was strange for me but even though I didn't like that part, I was too young to understand it, but I sure loved the beautiful women in it. The way it was shot is astounding, the lighting and the darkness perfectly matched, and I always wondered about the count's assistant, real or make-up, you be the judge, but ouf, scary! 30 years later, I'm still that little boy watching this movie like it was the first time, and to me, it will probably be one of the best horror films ever, because of all the right elements, and it also made me laugh, thank goodness. If Roman Polanski had wanted, he could have done a real scary movie out of this. It scares enough to bug you, but it's the innocence you never forget.

Uncle Walt's Timeless Gift.

Nearly 2/3's of a century later, Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs still has the power to enchant and amuse and beguile. The restoration is fabulous, with clean, crisp & clear picture and beautiful digitized sound. It looks and sounds as it must have been intended, if not better, and this first full-length animated story still delivers. Your children and grandchildren should love it.
There are two Discs just chock-a-block with goodies. There are documentaries, background stories, features on animation, games for the kids, galleries of original drawings, deleted sequences and so on. As much or more than you ever wanted to know about the making of this landmark film. There is so much to see that more than one viewing is essential.
I found the influences of European artists Disney brought in to create the overall look of the film, evoking German fairy tales, interesting. Of course there is the inevitable Disney Co. commercial inherent in some of the presentation (they are a Marketing juggernaut in case you didn't notice), but that is to be expected and is minor. The different Special Features are beautifully presented with new animation and different human guides.
If you are interested in what went into making a landmark of animation, you will certainly find something of interest here. If not, you still have the marvelously presented feature itself.
After viewing most of all of the 2 discs, what struck me most was a renewed respect for Walt Disney's courage and vision. He continually bet the farm (with brother Roy backing him) on his own gut instincts & intuition. That, and his absolute demand for craft and creativity and excellence. I grew up with Uncle Walt, on TV and successful, and it is good to remember that he had no safety net or guarantees when he layed it all on the line for what he wanted to do. He was a true American genius, a crazy combination of savvy entrepeneur, craftsman, artist, visionary, gambler, and Marketing whiz. He was one in a million.

Compulsively Watchable..

When comedy makes you howl with laughter (D.L.Hughley riffing on men's dirty underwear and black people quitting their jobs) remember good times in your youth (Cedric The Entertainer's take on gangs being break dancers or his now classic 'I'm a grown a** man dawg!' routine)cry with joy and delight (Steve Harvey's sing along with the audience to EW&F, The Ohio Players and Lenny Williams and his cursing in church bit....'I don't know how much money these mother****er's think I got!')and even flinch but still bust a gut (Bernie Mac's entire half hour, the best thing here) then you know you've witnessed true brilliance. Spike Lee's direction is kinetic and the way he involves the audience makes you feel like you're part of the crowd. While there's plenty of profanity and risque' humor, everone here seems to be having the time of their lives and the feeling is addictive, joyous and upbeat. I put this on when I need my spirits lifted and it works everytime. A new comedy classic.

not for the light hearted

First off let me say if you are a light hearted person this movie probably isn't for you. The dvd itself has ok extra's.. it comes with 5 trailers and a music video. Now the movie is visually nice. The story is pretty twisted and sick.. I am a huge horror fan but I have to say I was pretty disgusted watching this movie.. it has alot of torture scenes that will make your stomach turn and disturb your sleep if you are weak hearted. One of the things that makes this movie so disturbing is the fact that there are real life people that actually go through sort of the same chainings and torture that the charachters in the movie go through and that is very unsettling to think bout.. The acting I felt was ok.. it could have been done better.. the charachters don't show the emotion that you would expect a person to have under the cirumstances that they were in.. all in all I give this movie 5 stars because the plot is brilliant.. and the ending is soooooooooooooo unexpected that you'll find your self saying WOW once you see it. Very .. very sick movie but a good one nevertheless.
