why did Vanilla Sky even happen???

Like most reviewers, I saw "Vanilla Sky," the American remake of this film, long before I saw "Abre Los Ojos." After finally seeing the original version, I'm left absolutely bewildered why anyone thought that it needed to be remade to begin with. This is a truly beautiful film. Wonderfully acted and written, and done with a fittingly modest budget. Granted, it's not in english, but I don't think the average viewer is as turned off by that as Hollywood seems to think. (How many copies of "Amelie" were sold in the US??? It's probably more to do with poor marketing than actual hatred of "reading" films.)
I will not get into a sprawling review of the film, as there are many reviews already posted which do so adequately enough. Just take my advice, if you found even a little in "Vanilla Sky" that you liked, and yet found it to be a deeply flawed film (as I did), give this version a try. It is a much more complete and well constructed film than "Vanilla Sky" ended up being. Far superior, in my opinion.

Taming of The Shrew

This is one of the best productions a Shakesperian play that you will ever see. The language is well spoken and the comedy bits are remarkable and 'work' with this production. I used a bad tape of this for twenty years for introducing tenth graders to William. Knowing that it is out again almost makes me want to go back to the little...dears. There is a production of the RSC of Midsummer's Night with Diana Rigg that is as enchanting and lyrical as this Shrew is bawdy and wonderufl. BUY IT NOW!

Great movie! I enjoyed it very much!

Before I saw it, I read in one of the customers' reviews that while watching this animation people tend to believe the characters being under impression that this is a live movie with real actors. I watched it today - it is totally true! I could see realistic emotions of drawn characters, which I never experienced watching animation. And I loved the story. Don't believe to trailer; what you saw there is not what you expect to find in the movie... the story develops in a very dynamic way with absolutely unexpected result! That was really entertaining, and thanks to other customers for not disclosing the plot in their reviews! Intrigued? Watch it!By the way, please keep your children out of this DVD, as there is some violence, a few explicit talks, and lots of serious social problems, which you would never be able to explain to them....

Great Aerobic Workout

I was very reluctant to buy this video at first, but now that I have it, I know that I made a good choice. I bought this video because kickboxing was reeking havoc on my knees and I wanted to continue to do high intensity workouts. This video delivered. It's quick for those days you don't have alot of time to workout. If you only have time for a 20 minute workout you have your choice of two or you can combine the two and do a 40 minute workout. The level of intensity is moderate to high. Even the first 20 minute segment is moderate to high and it is low impact. The second 20 minute segment can be done at the viewers own intensity level. Half of the video's participants are working out at a low level and the other half are working out a a high level. The only problem with the video is that the participants are a little to perky and you may have trouble keeping up with the different aerobic steps in the beginning. She is fantastic at breaking the steps down so you can keep up, it may just take a little time to get the moves down and coordinate with her. Nevertheless, a little uncoordination in the beginning is worth it. This is an excellent aerobics video. It's also a great way to supplement your strength training workout.

Bravo, for the release of this obscure Rankin/Bass gem!

What ever made this show get released on DVD prior to all the other more popular Rankin/Bass specials is beyond me, but I am quite pleased to see it, nonetheless! I don't even think this was ever out on video, so it's here first in all DVD splendor.

Nice to see Danny Kaye in Denmark with all the kids. My son loves the animagic the most, but has no trouble paying attention to Danny and all the kids having a grand ole time in great Danish settings. It's a shame the rest of the Danny Kaye series never materialized as they invisioned it.

epic story, powerful acting, brilliant detail

This film is fantastic. The special effects are awe-inspiring, the costumes are perfect--but the best is Russel Crowe's commanding performance of a man who is powerful, cunning, and noble. Crowe captures in this role something that all modern men thirst after, an ideal virility that almost can't exist in modern society.
Admittedly, this film will generally appeal more to men than women. There are, however, some aspects that everyone should appreciate--in addition to being a brilliant hybrid of epic film and action thriller, the historical accuracy of the film is delightful. While the Colusseum was enlarged in film, it was awesome to see the detail of the hundreds of statues surrounding it and the awning stretched above; other historical accuracies include traditional expressions, such as how gladiators addressed the emperor before battle; types of gladiators and their weapons and armor; treatment of slaves and class interactions; and while Commodus was not killed by a gladiator, he often did fight them in the Colusseum. And of course, there were such gladiatorial combats; in some fesivals lasting months, thousands of men and animals would be killed.
Gladiator *is* an impressive feat of special effects and action choreography, but it is also an intelligent rendition of the colorful and exotic life the Romans lead.

2 awesome 2 say

I have to admit that I had my doubts about this sequel when I realized that Vin Diesel was not going to be a part of the cast. I had even bigger doubts when I found out that Tyrese was going to be in the movie (I always doubt singers turned actors). But I must say that I really enjoyed "2 Fast 2 Furious".
In this film, Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker), a former cop, enlists the help of childhood friend, Roman Pearce (Tyrese), to bring down a very wealthy and highly dangerous criminal in Miami.
The cars are faster, the people and locations are more beautiful, and the story is much lighter than the original. There is much more humor thanks to Tyrese and Ludacris, another music artist who gives a great performance!
I would suggest seeing this film. It's definitely one you don't want to miss!!!

They beat horses -don't they ?

Distirbing movie about a horserace and how cruel and abusive some of the characters are or become. I saw this movie when I was 11 years old and have never forgotten it. Anyone who loves animals and horses will be deeply moved. The movie encompasses all the human vices with the sheer unconditional loyality of the horses that they harm or kill. The "desert scene" of the horse running to it's death still haunts me. I hate westerns and loved this movie. Unconfortable to watch for animal lovers but worth it.

Dazzling!

"Crouching Tiger" is a blessing, a film that singlehandedly elevates the guilty pleasure of chop-sockey flicks to high art.
Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh are perfectly cast as lovers who are united by their past yet forbidden to act on that love by their code of honor. These talented actors say all there is to say with meaningful glances, conveying their mixed emotions of desire and regret. (The dialogue is also surprisingly good for a "kung fu flick," but is much more effective in Chinese with Engish sub-titles rather than dubbed in English.)
Still, this movie is first and foremost a martial arts film -- albeit one with a heck of a love story. Two fight scenes in particular - an early one at night in a courtyard and a later scene in a sparring room - steal the entire movie. World-class athleticism combined with astounding choreography and a heart-pounding soundtrack -- sheer bliss!
"Crouching Tiger" gives us heroes to cheer, villains to hiss, and colorful sidekicks to make us smile. Put this all together with stunning camerawork and a heart-breaking climax, and you've got yourself one heck of a picture!
The only criticism of the DVD is the relative paltry offering of extras. But I'd rather have a great film with few extras than a mediocre film with a ton of goodies on the DVD.
