Yoga For Every Body - movie DVD cover picture
very versatile and more for the money

i spend most of the year living in remote places, so i have fallen out of the habit of doing yoga. i bought this dvd when i got a new laptop computer with an internal dvd player. it is just great.

used to be i would go to yoga classes off and on, so i have some knowledge of the poses, but am by no means advanced. and i'm the proud owner of what appear to be the tightest, most stubborn hamstrings in the history of bipeds. this dvd was neither too challenging nor too easy. it is helping me improve in flexibility and strength. it is relaxing and ideal as a daily practice dvd, because of the variety and the calm soothing manner of the instructor.

there are over thirty different workouts, taught in iyengar style, broken down first into level of practice (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) and then within each of those they are again divided into practices either shorter or longer than 45 minutes. within each of those sections, there are various routines arranged to target a particular part of the body or as a general practice routine. the great thing about the dvd is that each pose is a single chapter, prefaced by the sanskrit name of the pose spoken and written on the screen (only 1-2 seconds). each routine is a string of chapters that takes you through a set group of poses. you can forward to other chapters within a routine if you want to skip certain poses or want to shorten the routine length. you can also go to a particular pose if you want to work on it individually, as long as you note the chapter number. there is no set way to do this (which would have been a nice touch).

the one thing some folks might not like is that the routines therefore do not always flow from one pose into another like a live class. sometimes you finish sitting in one pose and have to be in on your hands and knees for the next, for example. i found this insignificant, especially given the versatility this format allows, but it may be irksome to others. another plus on this dvd is that some poses that are hard to learn are taught differently at each of the practice levels--for example, there are beginner, intermediate, and advanced versions of the sun salutation. actually, i wish they had done this with more of the poses, but whether they do or don't, the instructor always includes suggestions for modifications and use of props. there are also a handful of different versions of savasana (corpse or relaxation pose) so you don't have to hear the same spiel every time. the dvd does not include poses that can cause injury if not taught by an instructor, such as handstand and plow. there is a supported shoulderstand but no full shoulderstand and there are several routines that include headstand.

the instructor has a smooth gentle voice and explains things very well. i like the no-frills atmosphere of the dvd--simple music, simple set design, one nice lady (the instructor) doing the poses. i'd rather get more routines for the money than views of distant beaches, however beautiful.

i have since bought the pilates and power yoga dvds in this series. the pilates is not bad, very extensive in choices with detailed and easy to follow instruction, but i find the instructor's voice a bit irritating. the power yoga dvd took some getting used to for me, as it is a sloooooowwwwww flow version of power yoga, not what you would expect from the title. since learning to change gears before using it, it has grown on me. still, i use this dvd far more often and expect to continue to do so.

Aliens, In It's Best Of All The Four Films!

Probably James Cameron's best work! This movie is an all time and old favourites to those people who is a fan of the Alien movie series. To dated, this movie still stands out from the rest. While Alien Resurrection is as good as Aliens, but it still never comes close when talking about the film overall mood settings. Furthermore, this DVD boasts THX mastering plus Dolby Surround and Dolby Digital soundtrack. James Horner dark score has always been provoking. Not forgetting that this film is the definitive Director's Cut version, giving the film back it's pivotal moments to its storyline, 17 minutes to be exact. That's plenty to look at. As a proud owner of this DVD from Amazon, my trusted shopping source, I'm recommending this DVD to those who is a loyal fan of the Alien series. Aliens is definitely the best, the only movie that really sets the mood! Two thumbs up!

Great Adventure, Drama, Comedy & Romance in TLW!

This is a great show currently awaiting a 4rth Season!! True fans are keeping fingers, toes and other appendages crossed. And we shall continue to do so until we hear word. This show is NOT cancelled so don't even think it. The "fat dino" (sorry) has not yet sung.
We were told lots of "extras", including footage from 2003 TLW convention will be in this DVD package. Also -- bloopers! Just can't resist those!! And MORE.
However, the true thrill is in getting the first season of The Lost World TV series, with all the great regular characters including Challenger, Roxton, Marguerite, Malone, Veronica and Prof. Summerlee ... and seeing how it all started!!
This is a don't miss!!

American Beauty - movie DVD cover picture
Simply Beautiful

This movie is one of the greatest films of all time. It is very moving film that can make you laugh and make you cry. Its realism is what makes it so good. The film shows very negative things but makes you see the world in a very positive way and makes you appreciate life so much more.It shows how the little things in life can stand out and be beutiful if you look closer. This is the best performance of Kevin Spacey's career.I think alot of peole can relate to his charecter because he is sick of being a nobody and wants to take risks and live life to the fullest. Its a movie about finding your place in life and doing what you want because life is to short to worry about the little things. American Beauty is simply beautiful in everway.

The Miracle Maker - The Story of Jesus - movie DVD cover picture
From a child's point of view

I watched the Miracle Maker on DVD and I really enjoyed it very much. It is a beautiful and moving depiction about the life of Jesus. The animation or claymation figures were very well done. This was a biblically accurate version of the life of Christ and I would recommend this film to anyone, child or adult. Comparing to some of the more recent films on the life of Christ (anything made after the 1990's), this is one of the best, most accurate portrayals. I hope that more Bible films can be made in this manner.

Literature that sweats

Remember all of those tiresome books you were REQUIRED to read - and read in Cliff's Notes - if at all? The ones with characters that seemed so odd - not really real? Totally removed from anyone you personally knew? Bill Murray took a lot of heat for doing this movie (the backstory is wonderful), but I think it's his best work. His portrayal of Larry Darrell is filled with vitality and authenticity. Somerset Maugham may not have mentioned the fact that Larry was occasionally known to scratch in public; Murray plays Darrell in a way that convinces me that the man was fully human, itches and all. Bill entertained in other movies; in this one, he proved he was a good actor. Everyone shines in this movie, but Bill Murray is the surprize. Add in the story, and the occasional engaging character, and you have a worthy addition to your movie library. (OK, here's the backstory: apparently, Murray bought the rights to "The Razor's Edge" - and then couldn't get a studio to make it. Then a studio offers to make the movie, if he'll appear in one they want him for - a movie he turns down twice, but finally accepts - a little thing called "Ghostbusters".)

Death on the Nile - movie DVD cover picture
Stunning and Unforgotten

The 1970's were the great decade of "all star" movies with casts filled with glittering names. After the success of 1974's "Murder on the Orient Express," it was inevitable that further films based on Agatha Christie's works would follow, of which this was the first.
As "Death on the Nile" opens, we meet Linnet Ridgeway--young, beautiful, rich, and single--shortly before she meets Simon Doyle, the fiance of her good friend Jackie de Bellefort. We soon see Simon on honeymoon--with Linnet, not Jackie. Simon and Linnet board a steamer for a cruise down the Nile, along with several other passengers--including Jackie, who has been tracking the newlyweds on their honeymoon, and who seems to have gone over the edge in her jealousy and anger.
Also on board are the famous detective Hercule Poirot, and his old friend Col. Johnny Race of the British Secret Service. And a good thing, too. Late one night, Jackie, in a fit of hysteria, shoots and wounds Simon, and is then taken to her cabin and sedated. The next morning, Linnet is found shot to death in her cabin. Jackie would be the obvious suspect, but she couldn't possibly have done it. And so the great Hercule Poirot has another complex case to unravel...
"Death on the Nile" is one of Christie's very best novels, and even with a simplified plot--fans of the novel will not the absence of several characters and at least two sizable subplots--the natural strength of the source material makes for a very enjoyable movie. It falls short of the very top because of some unsatisfactory casting. Peter Ustinov is no more than an adequate Poirot, falling short of either Albert Finney or David Suchet. At times he seems to rely largely on his eavesdropping talents, not his "little grey cells." Nor is David Niven a good choice for Col. Race--he is too dapper and elegant to portray Christie's "man of unadvertised comings and goings."
However, the supporting cast is quite strong. Mia Farrow, as Jackie, gives the standout performance. Lois Chiles, best remembered today as a Bond Girl, didn't have great range as an actress, but the lovely ex-model had the right personality for the arrogant Linnet. Bette Davis and Angela Lansbury also stand out.
The film won an Oscar for best costumes. Nino Rota contributed an atmospheric score, and John Guillermin directs ably. The Egyptian locations--most of the film was shot there--provide a stunning backdrop.
On the whole, this is a very enjoyable movie. It is clearly the best of Peter Ustinov's several outings in the role of Poirot.
