Wagner - Tannhauser / Levine, Cassilly, Marton, The Metropolitan Opera - movie DVD cover picture
very enjoyable production

This recording of the Paris version of Tannhauser was made from performances at the Met on November 22 and December 20, 1982. It features Richard Cassilly in the title role, Eva Marton as Elizabeth, Bernd Weikl as Wolfram von Eschenbach, John Macurdy as Hermann, Landgrave of Thringia, and Tatiana Troyanos as Venus, among many other performers. The sets are designed by Gunther Schneider-Siemssen. James Levine conducts. Taken as a whole, this is a successful performance, done in a very traditional manner. The costuming is outstanding, and the choral work deserves special recognition. Levine's tempi are brisk but not pushed hard and the whole opera runs for 185 minutes. The sound quality is excellent considering the medium and age of the recording itself. A brief synopsis but no libretto is submitted, which is reasonable considering the opera is also subtitled in English. In comparison to Solti's studio recording, the orchestral balance is not as forward or aggressive, and the singing is as fine. At medium price, this is definitely worth seeking out. Elegant packaging and presentation. Recommended.

Mr Doubt Is Fired

I liked this a lot, you probably know what its all about by now, but just in case ou dont heres how it goes. A couple with three kids just got divorced, on the sons 13th birthday(played by Matt Lawrence) The only way the father Daniel (Robbin Williams) can see his kids regularly is to be the housekeeper his ex wife needs. He gets fixed up like an old lady and uses one of his many talents in voices to sound like one too. He applies over the phone with her and gets the job as Mrs Doubtfire. Its pretty funny, and touching too. I recomend it

Second only to "When Harry Met Sally"

I love this movie. It's my second favorite Meg Ryan film.
When Meg's character is suddenly dumped by her fiancee, she flies to Paris to win him back. She then runs into Luke (Kevin Kline, playing sleazy-French-man particularly well) who has his own agenda (namely, smuggling jewels). The two sorta end up stuck together in France, tracking down her former love. I laughed many times over. Favorite scenes include a particularly Mentos commercial-like getaway from the French police, Meg falling face first into a cake while spying on her ex, and the initial meeting between her and Kline on the plane.
Definately a must see for romantic-comedy fans.

Excellent Movie, Great Action, Great Characters

Like the other reviewer said, this Movie is not supposed to be an epic tale like Star Wars and the Godfather. Mummy Returns is supposed to be a great action/adventure flick, and it succeds. It had the right amount of plot that these movies are supposed to have, good story but not so complicated that it distracts you from the rest of the movie. I loved that they brought back all the original characters, played by the same actors. If you liked the first one, you'll love Mummy Returns!!

Quit Whining, they're not your films

I am absolutely sick of people whining and complaining about the changes Lucas made to his movies. Well Mr./Mrs. I-Hate-The-Special-Editions, did you create Star Wars? Are these your stories to tell? Did Greedo shoot first? WHO CARES?! These are the most minute of details Lucas is changing. As for the change of Anakins in Jedi, listen to Lucas' commentary on that scene before you start complaining. Besides, no matter how much you whine and throw a hissy fit over the changes Lucas makes to HIS MOVIES (I feel I have to emphasize that) he won't listen. These are the versions he wants to make available. He wants to tie these in with his prequels. If you want the original versions, go buy one of the many bootlegged laser discs turned DVDs of them. The way I see it, sit down, SHUT UP, and just watch Star Wars without complaining about miniscule changes. Enjoy it while it lasts, Star Wars is coming to an end. So please, for the sake of the fans who don't give a rat's *@! as long as it's STAR WARS, please STOP WHINING!

Biography - Mozart (A&E DVD Archives) - movie DVD cover picture

Born into a family surrounded by music, Mozart was like many of today prodiges, with one exception... he excelled at what he did inspite of his father's ruthless treatment and pursued music because he truly felt it with his soul. Beautiful footage, historically accurate and filled with the wonderful splendor of Mozart's music, this video brings you in touch with the very soul that Mozart put into his music. Starting with his very first piano sonata at the age of six, which made his father realize his child's genius, to the funeral piece he was working on at the time of his death, we see a man with a burning soul to express his feelings and thoughts through his music. A genius tortured by emotional unrest, yet married to a very beautiful and loving wife, Mozart shows us that the dynamics of genius are truly unique to the genius himself and can only be expressed in the most unique of fashions, in his case his music. This production is appropriate in it's coverage, length of time and is filled with the thoughts of todays most celebrated pianists, violinists and conductors, all of whom share the same passion for Mozart's music as for no other master musician since his days.

Well done

This movie definately wasn't a remake of the first Matrix, and definately sets the stage for a wonderful final episode. The sense of hopelessness and darkness is well maintained and developed over the length of the movie, with the only hope coming at the very end. This is a movie I will watch many times, so owning the DVD was well worth the cash.
