very enjoyable

I agree in principle with the previous reviewers, but I feel the films' faults have been exaggerated. It follows a set format of opera films, of the kind that are broadcast a lot on German and Austrian TV channels. This genre is harmless enough, and at worst it serves to illustrate the action (and provides a translation). I found this DVD very enjoyable. I have more issues with the libretto itself. What is the dramatic value of act IV (Siberia)? I feel it doesn't only illustrate how low the protagonists fell, but also drags this whole mediocre piece very low. It's almost as if a bourgeois (or even religious) morality rears its head in this Stalinist - era work, depicting rather crudely sin's punishment.

Much better than I had hoped

When this was first released on DVD I thought that it was going to be another tease the men with a scantily dressed woman. Out of boredom I decided to watch it as I had seen most of the other comic book movies. To my suprise it is now one of my favorite movies. The work that they did on cat movement and Halle's work in mimicing them was a treat to watch and it was a rare treat to see an ancient religious belief treated with respect. I also liked the way the treated the duality of what a woman can be if she chooses and her right to choose. I have recommended this film to all I know who like me are pagan.

Classic Comedy

SOME LIKE IT HOT has been called the greatest comedy movie of all time. That's a pretty big niche to fill and, let's face it, individual opinions will vary. I have several personal favorites. THE GREAT RACE, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, HARVEY, TOOTSIE, IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD and A SHOT IN THE DARK come to mind, and I could name some others. Nor do I try to rank them in any particular order. I love them all, and this one sits right up there with them all on my shelf.
Individual favorites aside, this film is just very funny. Curtis and Lemmon are wonderful together as two down-on-their-luck musicians who find themselves at the wrong place at the wrong time and, disguised as women, join an all-girl band to get out of Chicago. Could these guys pull off such a stunt in real life? Probably not, but that doesn't make the situation any less humorous. Hysterical scenes and great lines abound. Monroe brings just the right amount of coquettishness and vulnerability to provide a center of gravity for all the madcap antics going on around her. At just over two hours in length, it's somewhat longer than your average comedy, but there's no reason for that to be a problem with a movie as entertaining as this one.
SOME LIKE IT HOT isn't my all-time favorite comedy, but it's a genuine classic and one I'm happy to have in my collection. In addition, this DVD has some nice extras, including a 30 minute interview with Curtis, the movie's only surviving star. The one drawback is that the movie was filmed in black-and-white, but for anyone who likes classic comedies, this is one DVD you want to have.

DIO Rocks

I bought this together with the cd DIO ANTHOLOGY: STAND UP AND SHOUT.Both I will say are Brilliant. The one thing that Dio can be said to be is diverse. The Evil or Divine DVD contains some great material.Absolutely great in Surround Sound. I can't say enough good things about this DVD except that when a singer can have a Late 1977 Concert in Munich recorded, and in a Show over 20 years later, come up with the goods in the same quality voice, the man has the gift.Totally Awesome DVD, worth the price. The Visual Quality concerns are not enough in my opinion to warrant a dismissal of this DVD as a product. However, if you are that Picky, it plays well in the background as music, and if only for that reason, buy it... the Man is the Voice of Hard Rock.

Gets better every time you watch it

This is one of my favourite movies of all time. Audrey Hepburn is just wonderful, and you can sense she is really FEELING what she portrays. Albert Finney is also very good, even though he is not a very likable character.
The best scene is when he says "I don't undrestand sex. Say it easily -why is it we enjoy it more when it means less?" She answers "It's because it isn't personal anymore". I swear, you can see the pain in her eyes when she says it.
This is a movie I have watched over and over, and I never get tired of it. It's mostly for romantics, but the rest of you will love it too.

Arsenic and Old Lace - movie DVD cover picture

The famous play by Joseph Kesselring was one of Broadway's biggest hits of the 1940's. This movie was actually filmed in 1941 and it's not typical of Capra's work; some, in fact find it one of Capra's lesser efforts yet the film is rollicking good fun any which way you slice it. Cary is admittedly broad in his playing, yet he's fresh and likeable as Mortimer (Grant himself disliked his performance & claimed he mugged too much for the camera.) the mild-mannered critic of plays who discovers that his kindly elderly aunts (excellently portrayed by veterans Hull and Adair) are actually committing "mercy killings" by serving unsuspecting lonely men guests Elderberry wine laced with arsenic! The cast is uniformly excellent with special kudos to Lorre and Massey; Jack Carson as O'Hara the cop is fun and the always welcome Gleason gives his standard stint as Rooney. As Teddy, little-known John Alexander is truly inspired, while Priscilla is cute and decorative as ancy Elaine. Some old movies which were yawned at during their release hold up better today-this is one of them! As a footnote, this movie was actually filmed in 1941, but because the Broadway play ran so long, it was kept from public release until 1944.

1 star for Superman, 1 star for Batman, etc, etc, etc

Hey, it's the Justice League for Pete's sake. How could it not be good? That would be like saying an animated Batman cartoon would be lousy. Oh wait, that Batwoman dvd was simply aweful. Nevermind.
Yes its good. Yes the action is fun and the fight scenes well done. Batman flying the watchtower into the atmosphere was perfectly type casted. A friend asked why Martian Manhunter didn't fly it because he could then phase out before the collision. Because on re-entry the station would burn and the Martian Manhunter is afraid of fire. He'd be flying all over the place like a high speed chase on a crowded freeway. What I'm saying is, the characters were well done. Based on their powers, the actions of the Leaguers was plausible and the whole Green Lantern/Hawkgirl romance storyline has been tied up. Good choice.

More surprises just like you'd expect

This is her Nair's best film in my book. It proves, with many laughs, that the insanity of the wedding ceremony and the nuttiness that leads up to it comes to us from centuries and continents away.
You may not understand the language they are speaking, but if you have ever even been remotely close to a wedding or someone getting married, you will understand what they are doing.
There are a couple of subplots that will make you go YESSS! when they are resolved. This is a film about normal average people being totally nuts at their best.
