very cute, intelligent and original movie....

"The More the Merrier" is a film that I wish I had heard of before. This is one of many great films directed and produced by the legendary George Stevens. Connie Milligan (Jean Arthur) is a young woman with patriotism in mind, who decides to rent out half of her apartment to someone, due to the housing shortage in wartime Washington DC. Connie had a female roommate in mind, but, that isn't what she gets. Mr. Benjamin Dingle (Charles Coburn) shows up at her front door--an elderly, retired millionaire, whose itinerary is two days ahead of schedule, and is seeking lodging, since his suite at the hotel is still booked up. Connie's grudgingly forced attempts to compromise with the gentleman, without starting a scandal, is just the beginning of the screwball humor in the film......
Mr. Dingle decides that Connie needs a clean-cut nice young man...not the uptight, too old fiancee she is currently seeing. Joe Carter (Joel McCrea) literally shows up on the frontstep, and the opportunity presents itself for Mr. Dingle to engage in matchmaking, as he rents out his half of the apartment to the young man.

I enjoy the broad humor of this film, that isn't at all dated in my perception. Also , the leads are likeable and believeable in their roles. The direction of the humorous scenes was brilliantly subtle, and is so much more engaging than the over-the-top, cartoonish comedies of today. It's like watching a beautifully choreographed dance......
Enjoy it......

All of J-Lo's HOT Videos on ONE DVD!

Read Above, enough said. This is one of my *Favorite purchases I've made. I watch this DVD a lot. I love it when an Artist (That you like) put's all of their videos on one DVD) I just pre-ordered Britney Spear's and I'm excited about it! If you like Jennifer Lopez and think that her videos are Hot than this is the DVD for you. The Sound is excellent! I always have to turn down the volume when I put it in. And they do a lengthy interview for each video she has done which is interesting to hear.

P.S. I heard someone say they wish they could go to the song they wanted to see instead of FW through all of the songs to get to it. I don't have this problem. I can skip to any song I want really fast?! Maybe my DVD remote control is different than others?

The height of filmmaking

I'll add a few incidental comments to the raves others have given. This film is a highly abstracted rendition of Arkady & Boris Strugatsky's novella "Roadside Picnic" (and contrary to the official synopsis, an alien visitation creates the Zone rather than a meteorite.) The title implies Clarke's notion that any sufficiently advanced civilization is indistinguishable from magic; the aliens' random trash is beyond our comprehension. That's just plot device, though, for Tarkovsky's moody portrayal of our inner lives. This is an incredibly atmospheric film with an "industrial" (in the pre-techno sense) soundtrack, and it also inspired a worthwhile CD by composer Robert Rich. Btw, I won't mind if they lose the lurid cover if, and hopefully when, this is issued on DVD...

No Oscar for Christopher Tucker ?!!

Virtually all my fellow reviewers have commented amply & intelligently on the masterful acting, directing, screenplay, & cinematography, so I needn't add to what they've said.

I bought this used on video before I owned a DVD player. I rented the DVD this past week simply to watch the Special Features, & I'm SO glad I did. The interviews were all enlightening, especially those with Hurt ("If you haven't been moved by the final scene, I don't think you're someone I'd care to know") & Christopher Tucker.

That Tucker received no Oscar for his backbreaking, painstaking, crucial makeup work is a bloody shame.

The best Rocky film

This movie is a great example of a cold war movie. The great American (Rocky) fights a huge, cold Russian man( Drago played by Dolph Lungren). I loved the way that Rocky trained manually in Russia while Drago trained artificially (injections, etc).
The saddest part of this movie begins when Apollo Creed(Carl Weathers) challenges Drago to a fight. He very arrogantly challenged Drago and expected to beat him. However, it turned out to be the exact opposite. It was very sad to see Apollo fall to the floor face down.

It's my favorite movie ever...

Every scene in John Cusack's movie (he co-wrote, co-produced and stars in it) helps to make it the best movie of the last dozen years. It's the best human comedy that I've ever seen and the elements of romance and violence make amazingly watchable. I could literally see this movie every week. The humor still makes me laugh ouot loud and the "discovering yourself" plot almost brings tears to my eyes. Plus, the use of color and music to enhance the scenes and really highten the level of emotion. It's an outstanding film. My favorite and hopefully one of yours.

One of the Funniest Movies I've ever seen.

Justice, indeed, for Kung Pow. The critics were horrendous when the movie came out in January. I'm gald to see its better graded here, because this is one heck of a funny movie, especially if you know a bit about kung fu action flics and are "mentally askew". I don't buy many DVD's (i currently have 3), but this one, i'll be sure to buy.

This was the best movie i've ever seen@

I thought this was a very good movie. It was funny at some parts, suspenseful at some, and just plain made me cry at the end. The plot was very intersting and intreguing, and the characters were well played. I would reccomend this movie to anyone looking for one to see.

Gladiator - movie DVD cover picture
Russel Crowe at his Best!

Many critics of the year 2000 have stated that there really weren't any good movies this year. They were wrong. Gladiator is an exceptional exception to the rule! Having watched several Russel Crowe films previously, I was unimpressed initially with the fact that people were raving mad about it and yet it stared Crowe. So I went along to watch it for myself.
The film begins with a battle scene more realistic than any other film before (that I've seen anyway). When you think about a battle, you think knights in shining armour with glory charging down the mountainside to slay all the enemy, almost without loss. This battle was grim reality. In the heart of a German forest, amidst the oncoming winter, the mud and the grime, rank upon rank rank (excuse the pun, if you get it) are standing bravely waiting for the barbarian attack. The battlescene is horrendously gruesome with many killed and wounded on both sides. How the directors managed such realism is beyond me and shows the potential for the cinema in future films.
The storyline continues, Crowe (the general in the aforementioned battle) being exiled by the cruel new emporer to become a circus gladiator. The rest of the movie follows his extremely melancholy life, in which wife and child are murdered, and he earns a reputation as one of the greatest gladiators in the arena. The film ends with Crowe fighting against the emporer in the arena. The emporer secretly wounds Crowe before the actual fight to give him an advantage. I won't say who won, or it would spoil the ending, but I will say that the Gladiator is
Unless you can't stomach the gore, in which case I do not recommend it. For everyone else, though, this is definitely one of the best of all time, and you will miss out sorely if you never watch it...

Need I say more. Having grown up with Hitchcock and all of the old favorites, even if you are savy enough to figure out the ending, it is was a pleasure to finnally have a movie, with an ending! Thats the way movies used to be made.
