Alien - movie DVD cover picture
A L I E N is the one that started it all

Alien stands the test of time as one of the greatest sci fi/horror films of all time. It is still being ripped off to this day but never equalled. Mostly overlooked by today's jaded teens and early twenty-somethings, this is no gun blasting action fest. That description best suits the 1986 sequel Aliens. Alien is really a suspense film. It is also a showcase for some of the best artists and designers ever assembled for a film project. The set and costume designs are second to none. H.R. Geiger's biomechanoid creature and set designs are also a frightful wonder to behold but what makes this film so frightening is something so often lacking with modern horror movies...character development. These characters are your blue collar working class neighbors. Everyday people you can identify with. Much of the dialog is so natural and spontaneous, thanks to Ridley Scott's directing style which encourages improvization from the actors. The first thirty minutes of the film are spent introducing the viewer to their world and setting up the terrors ahead. When they are thrust into a living nightmare and must rely on their wits to survive you are right there with them to the horrifying end. I first saw Alien when it was released in 1979 and I've witnessed the endless stream of lame imitators like Deep Star Six and Species. See the first, the original and best of them all.

Classic anime

My sister and I rented this movie on VHS back in the early 90's. We fell in love with it and I still love it to this day. It is a rather simple plot that is easy to enjoy if you are kid or a kid at heart. I am desperately waiting for this to come out on DVD. It would make my year.

If you've got a lot of time to kill.

This was an impulse buy for me, but I figured since I had "The Fellowship Of The Ring," I should invest in "The Two Towers." I'm a behind the scenes sort of geek and I loved the extra footage of how Peter Jackson and crew put everything together. The real treat for me though was the behind the scenes music footage with Howard Shore composing the score. Do I think "The Two Towers" is better than "TFOTR?" I lean more towards "TFOTR" because of its introduction to Tolkien's worlds. However, my favorite character, Eowyn, is brought in with this one, and the Battle for Helm's Deep just flat out kicked ass. So, overall, I'm tied with these two. What I liked about the extended edition also is the extra footage added. We see the situation with Faramir and his complex relationship with his brother and father drawn out more which I was always interested in.If you've got a lot of time to kill, get this one. However, if you're not really interested in the behind the scenes footage and/or extended scenes, then just purchase the regular edition.

A jewel of a movie.

Rarely have I been dazzled by a movie, especially one with Catherine Zeta Jones in it. However I was truly surprised by this film. Granted that the film is a remake of a 1980 TV miniseries, but so what. For those who have not seen Traffik, the original miniseries, I believe that you will truly enjoy this one. The acting is excellent and the filming is superb.

The best movie!

Like a lot of reviewers, I saw this as a child with my mother. She was a horror fan so I got to see all the 80s thrillers in the cinema. This film still stands in my mind. It has a great atmosphere about it. The great Bette Davis stars and is as wonderful as always. It may look cheesy by todays standards, but they don't make movies like this anymore. An old fashioned ghost story without gore and violence. Just good creepy fun.

By far the best movie of the century so far. It is not the all gore-blood-chopping that most people think it is. Perfect performances and acting give this movie a 10! If you liked Gibson in the Patriot you will LOVE Crowe in Gladiator!

Sub Good. Dub Bad.

You might notice that nearly all of the complaints about this movie refer to the English dubbed version. My advice to any potential buyers is simply this: BUY THE SUB and AVOID THE DUB. Hey - it even rhymes so you can remember it easily!
Buying the dubbed version means you pay a lot of money for a movie with several scenes missing, mediocre acting, and bad translations. Buying the subtitled version, however, means you have the original uncut movie with a great soundtrack, terrific voice actors, and good dialogue. If you're buying this for a child who is too young to read subtitles, don't worry - they'll probably be too engrossed to care (that's been my experience with kids and Sailor Moon, at least). Heck, it's just plain funnier, more suspenseful, and more touching in Japanese. If you still feel compelled to purchase the dubbed version...well, more power to you. But the sub really is better.

Carol Burnett--the Queen Of Everything

Carol Burnett can sing, dance, do drama or do comedy. She and her regular co stars are "the bomb", especially in the "Family" sketch featuring Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence, Harvey Korman and Carol as a working class southern family trying to play Charades. The fabulous Pointer Sisters (Ruth, Anita, Bonnie & June) sing their #1 R&B hit How Long (Betcha Got A Chick On The Side), play a straight-laced vocal group facing off a super hip radio DJ and join Carol and her female chorus in a rousing gospel version of "Get Me To The Church On Time" from the musical "My Fair Lady". With Carol and the Pointers, you can't go wrong!!!!
