smart, tasteful surprise

I saw RAVENOUS about a month ago, and I'm still thinking about it. Director Antonia Bird came out of the woods and thwacked me over the head with this one. For the first few sequences, she leads you to believe this is a DANCES-WITH-WOLVES type of movie (almost matching that film scene for scene, in fact), but after about five minutes she starts taking you on one sudden, surprising departure after another, and you realize that this is no DANCES WITH WOLVES, and that you are, on the contrary, in for a very weird, very fun, and very clever roller coaster ride. It's a credible, effective, and original horror movie, but for all its bloodiness, it's also a very intelligent and pointed morality tale; a fable pointed at our man-eat-man times. Robert Carlyle relishes his role, Jeffrey Jones dishes up his usual understated excellence, and Guy Pearce pulls off a surprising change of palate from LA CONFIDENTIAL.

Phenomenal Restoration of a "Must-See" Classic

Movie: ***** DVD Transfer: **** 1/2 Extras: ***

"Drums Along the Mohawk" is prime John Ford, an example of the screen Americana of which he and fellow director Henry King were masters. Based on a popular novel by Walter Edmonds, the story concerns the trials and tribulations of a young couple (beautifully played by Claudette Colbert and Henry Fonda) who settle in New York's Mohawk Valley, only to become swept up in the American Revolution. Presented as a series of vignettes, the movie begins with the couple's marriage ceremony and follows them as they travel through the wilderness; set up a home; clear their land; begin a family; and are finally faced with the challenge of fighting the Redcoats and the American Indians who have allied themselves with the British. Questions of historical accuracy aside, the film is superbly acted (with an especially notable performance by distinctive actress Edna May Oliver, who received an Oscar nomination for her work), meticulously directed, and spectacularly photographed in breathtaking three-strip IB Technicolor.

Happily, Fox Home Video invested the time and money necessary to have this classic film digitally restored for its debut on DVD. Having owned the previous VHS and LaserDisc releases of this movie, I can attest that "Drums Along the Mohawk" has never looked so stunning. Although the print is not perfect (several key scenes are marred by a soft quality that appears as subtle red or green outlines among the actors' faces), the video overall is cleaner, crisper, and more free of artifacts than ever before, and the sound is remarkably clear. Besides a restoration comparison, the DVD also includes a theatrical trailer for the film, probably prepared for a mid-1940's re-release since it is presented in black-and-white. (20th Century-Fox was in the habit of reissuing many of its Technicolor classics in black-and-white versions during the post-war years to reduce the cost of new prints.) Minor quibbles aside, this DVD offers a remarkably beautiful transfer of a "must-see" classic, and is heartily recommended for inclusion in your home video library.

A classic whose reprocussions are still felt

I am a professor emeritus at a university in eastern Australia. I have taught this book in my class for over 15 years. Each time I see the movie, I am reminded of how this book echoed through the minds of readers and publishers when it was published in 1960. Then, something magical happened. A movie. This movie steals the very heart and soul of every human being that watches it. I can still see the moist eyes and cheeks of my students as they exit my classes. This movie is a timeless classic that will never die. Please, make yourself feel good, and purchase this movie- or even rent it for a night. You will never forget it. Gregory Peck crowns himself king of the era.

Yes I know this film doesn't capture eye-boggling stunts or nail bitting fight scenes but it is still very good and that the plot is the usual: an evil villan who posions the water to take over the world! I love Jackie and his films more than anything in the world! I know that I'm one of the few people who liked it but I advise all of Jackie's fan so give it a try!

A Breath of Fresh Air

The performers in this movie are wonderful. It is so refreshing to see young, mostly unknown actors and actresses, do work of such a high caliber that gives this movie a life of it's own. Even without the stellar musical performances, each one of these thespians brings something to their character that make him or her stand out. As for the musical perfomances; well they elevate this movie to a rock and roll "must see". To bring such vitality and sincerity to music that was made before most of them were born, well that's like a breath of fresh air to an old rock and roller like me. Is this movie worth owning and treasuring? Well as the Commitments' manager would say; "ABSOLUTELY! NO QUESTION!!". P.S. The "Treat Her Right" music video, that comes as a extra on this DVD, is icing on a perfect cake.

Evil Dead (Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
A Horror Die-Hard's Horror Film

Though definitely not for everyone, Sam Raimi's Evil Dead is the quintessential Horror Comedic Gore film. Filled with outrageous decapatations, bodily dismemberments, bleeding plumbing, exploding chest cavities, tons of Kayo sryup, a perfectedly cast Bruce Campbell, and an abundance of Three Stodges physical humor, Evil Dead astounded 80's audiences with it's warped comically tinted interptation of the conventional horror film. Though reportedly made for a scantly 50,000, the film's low budget didn't hamper Sam Raimoi's stylistically virtuoso direction brimming with oft-kilter camera angeles, hyper-kinetically panning, and alrmingly ubrupt close-ups from engraving Evil Dead as one of the most extraordinary enthralling horror opuses in the history of cinema. A Must-Buy. Definitely a stellar DVD package filled with everything a Dedite fan could possibly desire.
