riveting

This is everithing movie shoud be. It has perfect story(a very hard one), perfect actors, perfect director, cool special effects and a suspence. This is my N.1 movie. And music is just awesom. Especial MAD WORLD witch explains the story pretty much. I think that JAKE GYLLENHAAL is the best new actor. Donnie Darko is a sad, funny, Sci-Fi Cult Classic. I Rate this one A+.

Battlestar Galactica (2003 Miniseries) - movie DVD cover picture
A reluctant fan of a well done re-working of the original

When they first released the mini-series, I was one of the fans of the original series who avoided this version out of principle. I was a boy when the first series came out and never missed an episode, so when they changed the gender of main characters, and showed the familiar cylons as humans, I was reluctant to get onboard.

This version is far darker than the original, the acting and writing much better, and the undertones more philosophical. While the original had some interesting nods to Egyptian history and the "architects of the pyramids", the philosophical context here is more aligned to the creation of artificial intelligence, and whether a soul may be present.

The basic storyline is that an artificial life form is created, and eventually forms a society which turns on their creators. The story here takes place 40 years after the last known contact with this race of machines called the cylons. The events unfold quickly when the cyclons attack without warning.

As a movie, the jumps between scenes are a bit disjointed because it was presented as a mini-series and not a film. Some better editing might have helped in this regard. If you are a fan of science fiction, this will appeal to you, if not the contextual settings may distract from the story, which is excellent. Suspenseful, engaging, and prone to thought provoking issues, this is a great film.

The Kingdom - Series One (Riget) - movie DVD cover picture
Oh, Lars, you wicked little boy!

Here is more inspired lunacy from Lars von Trier, director of "Breaking the Waves", "Zentropa", and "Dancer in the Dark." It's a horror film *and* a spoof of the horror genre at the same time, and both parts work very well indeed. A television mini-series about a haunted hospital, its most obvious debt is to "Twin Peaks." But you can also find traces of "The Shining", "Rosemary's Baby", "Carrie", "Night of the Living Dead", "Re-Animator", and even "Ghostbusters." The four-hour plus running time gives von Trier the space to develop lots of details and characters so the film has a dense, satisfying "novelistic" quality. The hand-held camera and semi-documentary style give versimilitude to the most outrageous events. Like other von Trier films, this one is so melodramatic that it eventually goes way over the top. But the writer/director is so talented you follow him all the way. Contains one of the most stunning cliffhanger endings I've ever seen. Plus, von Trier himself appears at the end of each tape to give some fiendishly amusing commentary. Horror buffs (and fans of the bizarre) shouldn't miss this.

This movie is funny, scary, if you're under eight, and suspenseful. You don;t want to leave the room to even go to the bathroom because you're afraid you'll miss something.

An absolute GEM. Melts my heart every single time I see it.

I've seen this movie countless times, and it keeps getting better every time I watch it. This is a very underrated romantic comedy. Intelligent as hell. Tons of chemistry between Mackenzie Astin and Ione Skye, the two main characters. Great supporting role by Michael Landes, who plays Ione Skye's cousin in the film. And Jennifer Aniston is great, too, as the ditzy best friend of Frankie (Ione Skye).

The first 15 minutes or so of this film are in black and white, and then it switches to color, very creatively I must say. The story is just fantastic. Any movie that quotes stuff always gets my attention... some of the references made in the film via quotes are Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Morrissey, Jim Morrison/The Doors, Kurt Cobain, and legendary philosophers like Aristotle and stuff. Brilliant screenwriting by Tiffanie Debartolo. I wish she'd make more films!

Ione Skye fans should also check out Gas Food Lodging.... yet another insanely underrated film.

I'll end this review by saying Dream For An Insomniac is a "Dream Come True for a Hopeless Romantic" (such as myself). It's released on DVD now, and it's cheap.

If you have a heart, if you're remotely romantic in any way, buy this film. You'll thank me.

The definitive film Christ, without special effects

Franco Zefirelli, a one-time opera director, entered the "classical" film subjects with "Romeo & Juliet", and reached his epic apex with this miniseries, trimmed down to 6 hours, from reportedly dozens of hours of finished footage. Is any of that other footage still about? Let's get it out!!What sets this film apart from all others is the acting, the fidelity to the main story, and the spectacular locations and cinematography. Sure, "The Greatest Story Ever Told", "King Of Kings" (both versions), "Last Temptation", etc. have their moments, but this production -- a joint British and Italian job -- surpasses them all. I originally copied this from TV onto Beta in the mid-80s, then bought the VHS, then procured the DVD here at Amazon. There are few films I've done that with! I realise I'm biased (see my personal info), but again -- even for an agnostic film fan, this is some of the best historical filmmaking ever released. Sell your golden calves and buy this product.

ONE OF THE BEST GANGSTER FLICKS OF ALL TIME!

SCARFACE IS A FANTASTIC MOVIE ABOUT A CUBAN IMMIGRANT WHO GETS SUCKED IN BY THE TEMPTATION OF MIAMI'S SEEDY DRUG-PEDALING UNDERGROUND. TONY MONTANA IS HIS NAME AND THE WORLD WON'T SOON FORGET HIS RUTHLESS, UNFORGIVING RISE TO THE TOP OF MIAMI'S LUCRATIVE DRUG-TRAFFICING INDUSTRY. HIS DUTIFUL SIDEKICK, MONOLO, IS INCLINED TO DO WHATEVER MONTANA TELLS HIM (AS EVIDENCE BY THE NOW-CLASSIC SEEN WHERE HIS OLD BOSS LOPEZ GETS SHOT). AND, NOT TO MENTION THIS MOVIE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ONE OF THE MOST IMMORTALLY MEMORABLE LINES IN ALL OF AMERICAN POP CULTURE: "SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND". AN ALL AROUND FANTASTIC MOVIE (IF YOU CAN LOOK PAST THE WHOPPING 160 F-BOMBS IN THE FILM). I'M ESPECIALLY FOND OF LAST FINAL SCENCES OF THE FILM, WHERE ALL THE HITMEN INVADE TONY'S MANSION. ONE OF AMERICAN CINEMAS ESSENTIAL "CULT CLASSICS".
