The Emperor and the Assassin - movie DVD cover picture
Brings back memories of Kurosawa and Lean

The Emperor and the Assassin is a sweeping epic from the director of "Farewell My Concubine" and "Temptress Moon." This film is undeniably one of the best 5 of the year and is strongly reminiscent of a Kurosawa or Lean film, whether in terms of lush photography or deep character studies. Though not ranking at the films of those directors, this film stands on its own as one of the best epics I've seen in a long time. The story follows a ruthless, cold-blooded emperor who will do anything to reach up to the highest level of rulership, a reformed and moral assassin, and the emperor's wife, who bring those two forces together. Though running at a length of 161 minutes, this film cruises by very fast, with realistic battle scenes, almost exactly like Ran and long, sprawling, unforgettable shots like Lawrence of Arabia. There are extremely good performances all around, and a complexed, but fully revealing storyline, which makes this a fascinating, highly ambitous masterpiece.

The best movie series ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ROCKY I, ROCKY II, ROCKY III, ROCKY IV, and ROCKY V are the greatest movies ever made. Sylvester Stallone, the best actor, writer, and director in the world has created something beyond belief. These movies are so amazingly awesome that it is impossible for me to get tired of them. All Stallone's films are like this. He is great. I believe that an artist portrays him or herself in his or her works, unless purposly trying to not to. So Stallone must have a humungous heart, because thats what I see in his characters when I watch his movies. All of the Rocky movies or better yet, Sylvester Stallone movies I think, deal with heart, determination, mind over matter, beating the odds, surviving, heart, love and a million other aspects of life. Well anyway I give this the highest rating possible. It really is the best movie series ever, forever and without it my life would not be complete.

wonderful tv show

Those who have complained about the first season are totally wrong. There is nothing wrong with the episode seqences or the packaging or anything else. The presentation is in order and the shows are easy to access from a main index screen. The picture and sound quality is great, and there is more than enough extra footage and deleted scenes stuff to make even the most fanatical NE fan happy. The second season, which includes classic episodes like Spring Break, and the writtings of major NE contributors like Robin Green and Diane Frolov, make it one of the best.
In terms of the claims some have made about the price being high, its not so bad when you figure you're paying about 6 dollars an episode, which is totally worth it considering shows like this are becoming extinct in the world of television.
Anyone who appreciates quality television should certainly find this dvd to be a great buy.

Otogi Zoshi

I own the first two volumes of this great series. I bumped into this hystorically based show in a store and looked at the box and thought I might like it. Having a Strong interest in hystorical anime I decided to bey it. And oh did I like it.

The character design and directing are amazing. The story strongly advances every episode and character development is strong. Emphasis in historical accuracy is seen throughout, though certain licences were taken for dramatic effect. For those of us not too informed Japanese history, the box comes with special features that explain the historical contexts involved.

As a fan of historically based Anime I am proud to have this in my collection.

Painful but rewarding

There's nothing new under the sun. This is a theme that's been tackled before but not quite so well. What makes this movie work is the performances--most notably by Kieran Culkin (and, as his younger self, by real-life younger brother Rory Culkin. (Is there a limitless supply of gifted Culkins?) With Bill Pullman offering a harrowing, entirely believable portrait of mental illness as Igby's father, and Susan Sarandon (who gives, sadly, the least believable performance in the film) as the pill-popping, relentless and utterly loathsome mother; with Ryan Philippe doing a convincing job as a driven, upwardly-mobile older brother, Igby doesn't stand a chance. Betrayal on all sides is the hallmark of his life and it's a testament to the character's intelligence and powerful life force that he doesn't crumble under the multiple assaults on his sensibilities. Igby lives in hope--something necessary to survival--and we hope along with him.
There are some hilarious scenes and some that are positively shocking in their unexpected brutality. Jeff Goldblum is flawless as Igby's super-rich godfather--helpful and seemingly feckless at moments only, at other moments, to reveal a cruelty stunning in its efficiency. Clare Danes (who, one must hope, will be around for decades to reveal more and more of her depthless talent) is lovely as Sookie--a layered, thoughtful performance with great substance. And Amanda Peet is like a live wire on wet pavement as Goldblum's girl-on-the-side.
Don't miss this. It offers a genuine insight into the mind of a bright, troubled (not without cause) young man and his innate resourcefulness in seeking something better and finer for his future. My highest recommendation.

More than Exercise

I have lived with this video for over 5 years now and have read Erich Schiffman's book as well. What strikes me about this video is the philosophy which runs deeply throughout the instruction and commentary. As in the relaxation at the end when Mr Schiffman says "Love is what's left when you let go of everything you don't need". Upon reading his book, I discovered that Mr Schiffman was a student of J. Krishnamurti and taught yoga for several years at a Krishnamurti school. If you are familiar with the ideas of Krishnamurti as well as a practicioner of yoga, this video offers a uniquely valuable insight into the practice of yoga. I highly recommend this video.

The Godfather is Dead

The Godfather is Dead, Long Live the Godfather. It is hard to believe that Marlon Brando has died. May he rest in peace.
From now on the scene in "The Godfather" when Vito Corleone dies in the garden will have added significance and meaning to all of us who admired "The Godfather," next to "Citizen Kane," surely the greatest movie ever made.
