quite the classic

The old, separate, VHS versions of these two holiday movies were what I watched when I was in the single digits, and now they're better than ever on a timeless DVD.
Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town is a humorous new twist on the entire life of one Santa Claus, and is worth the viewing for kids and adults alike.
Me, though, I bought the DVD for the Little Drummer Boy, which is what I think is one of the best Christmas movies, EVER. Hands down.
So, come on down, and spend a little money on a couple mini-movies that have already survived for decades and are sure to last for many more to come.

De Niro Rules

I enjoyed this film. I would not, however, call this a "must see." Crystal was dead-on, which surprised me. I am not his biggest fan. This was not one of De Niro's best performances. When serious, his performance is adequate. His crying scenes were awkward at best. The performance went so over the top, I was at certain points expecting him to break character, and turn the scenes into a put-on. Director Harold Ramis has a long and respected comedy dossier, but some parts of the film fell into a sit-com of predictability. Unfortunately, we have "The Soprano's" as a reference at this point, which hurts this film and makes me wish this film had tried to achieve more. I saw the film last night, and will screen it again for good measure, but I wouldn't say this film brushed "Stripes" or "Ghostbusters" territory.

The Sopranos - The Complete Fifth Season - movie DVD cover picture
Best show on television ever.

How did I recover from my disappointment over "Six Feet Under" hitting the rocks in season three? By watching the ever-strong, never-disappointing, well-written Fifth season of the "Sopranos". That show, despite being in the gangster genre, transcends the genre, and reaches heights unknown to the "Godfather" and other mafioso flicks. It is real, perceptive, and in tune with the realities of human nature and mother nature. Add to that, fascinating, sexy, thrilling, and titillating. This show entertains. "Six Feet Under" might not be six feet under right now if the producers had fired all their lousy writers and hired on the Sopranos talent. Or better yet, recalled the stellar talent from 6FU's first two seasons.

Screw political correctness, to hell with the latest intellectual trends, and bollocks to the Republican party; give me what is real and speaks to the blood. Old blood, before the dawn of Roman conquest; barbaric. Sopranos does that. I want to know where Darwin fits into society. I want to get inside the bones of a gangster and know what he's thinking. How different is it really from the warriors of two thousand years ago?

I ditch my loyalty to "Six Feet Under" and kiss Clair, Nate and David goodbye. I've flipped. From now on it's the Sopranos all the way. What can I say? It's just good writing. And good acting. That is all I ever ask for.

Five stars. With no reservations. And I have only watched 6 of the shows so far. What I am saying here is, if the other shows were pure drivel, still the six shows are worth five stars for the overall product. I love it and want more. Pay Gandolfini whatever he asks, HBO. Make him a millionaire a zillion times over.

As to the reviewer who bemoans the lack of morals in the characters? This show merely reflects, at the street level, what is going on daily in Washington, D.C. among the Republican majority in Congress, i.e. thieving, lying & cheating. I prefer the Sopranos to watching the news about the decline of the American Republic.

Quatermass 2 - movie DVD cover picture

Thanks to an excellent literate script by master Nigel Kneale and intensive, atmospheric direction by the underrated Val Guest (who both scored great marks with "Abominable Snowman"), this ranks as one of the best and most disturbing Science-Fiction Thrillers. I don't need to reiterate the intriguing story, but it builds gripping suspense from the word 'Go' and finally escalates into a crucial state-of-alarm that climaxes in a thrilling and terrifying showdown at the secret alien refinary plant in the remote British country. Pretty violent and grim for its time, and it still retains its entertaining and thought-provoking qualities. The confrontation between the workers and the alien-controlled government & military "zombies" has certain Marxist underlying themes of the 'workers revolt againest the oppressive, dictatorial rulers' - who, in shattering fact, are aliens who are truly alien - and thoroughly malevolent. Some kaffka allegories of corrupt government and fascism are conveyed here in the bleakest of ways. Kneale's intelligent, riveting screenplay also served as the basis for the James Bond plots and wild devices that surfaced a few years later in the rebelliously turbulent 6O's - which this insightfully compelling Science-Fiction Classic seems to sinisterly forecast. Not your typical or campy monster movie by any long shots. Also, quite cynical for its time, as Quatermass is forced to become the angst-ridden, alienated hero (anti-hero) in his accidental uncovering of conspiracy (his plans for a proposed moon project is swiped by them) and cover-ups: Very Hitchcockian. Also sounds a lot like X-FILES, doesn't it? I believe this was XF's producers favorite childhood science-fiction film; the dark, ominous influence and inspiration is undoubtably present. Not a kid's flick by any means. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this hauntingly memorable and intensely scary classic. Probably the most starkly realistic vision of what a true alien invasion might be like. Genuine nightmares to take to bed - and wonder.

Great for film students and lovers of film.

I bouhgt the laser disc version in 1994, and I have seen it since then, almost 30 times. I have just ordered the DVD version as soon as I knew that existed. I don't know which features does have the DVD version, but in laser disc was extraordinary, I learned a lot from the best cinematographers, e.g. Almendros say that a cinematographer should never use a fog filter. I really recomend strongly this DVD not only for film students, but also for every person who own a DVD, you'll never see this on TV.

paul walker is great

When I read things like "best movie ever" and "better than then the first" under a movie like 2 Fast 2 Furious it make me well, Furious. This is not the kind of movie anyone should consider their favorite, it pan handles to the audience, merely repeats the first films action (fast cars + trucks = crash) and dares to go on without Vin Diesel. To say the least the first one was also a steaming pile of hollywood excrament but this one surely takes the cake on useless and horrible sequels. If you are so sorely in need of seeing cars watch Nascar or for the luv of pete play a racing video game, those two things combined will feed your need for speed without giving into movies such as this. It just seems like movie audiences today have no kind of standards, it appears that they can, will, and do watch anything that comes out.

Marvels best movie to date

Ok I have something I need to say about this movie and its that "Its better than Spider Man 2" , ok before you go crazy and start to hope all the evil things in the world happen to me. Think for a second ok, Spider man 2 is a great and by far one of the greatest films to date. But The punisher is a film that we can all relate to, spider man at times has to be an inosint film so that younger children can see it. the punisher throws all that away so that you can really see what it would be like for a man who has lost it all. Spider man is great and exceeds in terms of visual affects and special effects and overall action because it had a greater production budget of 200 million dollars. But the punisher looks incredibly great at only a 33 million dollar budget. You have to admit that they had a better team working on the punisher than Spider man. And for those of you the\at read the comics like myself, the film stayes true to the comic fully, except for the fact that the story took place in tampa bay florada and in the comics it was New York city, but that's not that big of a deal because when you see the movie you think one thing and one thing onbly this movie is perfect.

Best Simpsons set yet!

First off let me say that if anyone working on The Simpsons reads this please ignore the people who'd rather see a "bare bones" set cranked out faster, without the commentaries and extras - I LOVE the commentary tracks, and the reasons this is the best set yet is the fact that the main cast members make appearances on some of the commentaries, AND there are even bonus 2nd commentaries on 4 episodes.
Now having said that I certainly would be happy with a faster release schedule, at least 2 seasons per year, maybe as many as 4 - though not at the cost of quality. If it comes to that I'd rather have them done right than fast. It is starting to look like something Matt Groening jokes about on the commentary tracks will come true (paraphrasing) - by the time all the seasons are released on DVD it will be an obsolete format... and you know High-Definition DVD is right around the corner.
At any rate please continue with all the extras - I'm a huge Simpsons fan (Comic Book Guy huge! Really!) but I don't think I'd buy a set of just the bare-bones episodes since they're in syndication (even though I hate that bits are edited out for time) and will be on TV forever (which is as it should be). As it is, with the extra features, I pre-order my set every year and haven't been disappointed.
Anyway I'm a major Simpsons fan, the show came on when I was in 7th grade - actually it was just the bumpers on the Tracy Ullman show at that time - I actually introduced my parents to the Tracy Ullman show because I liked The Simpsons so much. They loved Tracy Ullman (they didn't watch FOX which featured memorable shows like "Werewolf" in those days, so they had no idea there was actually a good show on FOX), I didn't get a lot of the jokes on that show (too young) but we all loved The Simpsons.
After that I was hooked, I was thrilled when I heard The Simpsons would be developed into it's own show, and I've seen every episode. Most of them multiple times since the syndication started. In my opinion The Simpsons is the best television show ever produced and probably the best that ever will be produced.
So having established my credentials as a "true fan", I commence with the whining. Some things I'd really like to see on future DVD sets (in addition to a faster release schedule):
1) Video of a table read. They did this on an episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast and it was fantastic. As many of these as possible. I'd love to see and hear different takes on lines, lines that are cut from the final show, ad-libs, etc. Cast members cursing would be good too - even if you have to bleep it for a "family" release.
2) Subtitles/Closed Captioning of the commentary tracks, with the name of who is speaking displayed. Possibly color-coded. It's often a bit hard to tell who is who on those tracks, and Jim Brooks doesn't seem to say much so I'd like to know when it's him speaking. Plus a couple people sound a bit similar - I think it was Mike Reiss (apologies if this is misspelled) and Jim Brooks who I couldn't tell apart. By the way I don't find Al Jean's voice at all annoying (as he mentioned someone posted on the net in one of the commentaries) - I think he's got a cool voice and sounds like he should be a character on the show.
3) include Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer on some of the commentaries. These guys are so important to the show and both do such an amazing range of voices. Apu, Burns and Smithers, the list is nearly endless. Please drag them in kicking and screaming to do the commentaries if necessary. I'd also like to hear from more of the writers, Conan O'Brien, and maybe some of the guest stars - both one-time guests and recurring guests like Joe Mantegna.
4) a collection of ALL the shorts from the Tracy Ullman show (and anywhere else they may have aired). Complete complete complete!
That's about it, I'm sure I'll think of other features but I'd be thrilled if any or all of these could be included on future sets.

Plain Chaos

That is what this movie basically is chaos. Sometimes it might be too crazy to believe, but I love it anyway! Although hated by the public when it was first released later it was looked at by other audiences and was loved. It was so loved that this movie is now in the American Film Institute. From everything to a fossil digging dog to chasing a leopard you will have to laugh at this movie. There are so many memorable scenes in this movie that I can't mention them all! If you like comedy at all you must see this movie!!!
