An excellent and moving film

"El silencio de Neto" is a remarkable and moving film of the events of 1954 in Guatemala from a young boy's perspective. In the film Neto is a metaphor for Guatemala during this time period as he strives to breathe and speak on his own terms. As a teacher of high school Spanish, I have found this film to be an excellent way to share history, language, magic realism, and culture with students. The film is made with much tenderness and affection and the events that take place for Neto and his family in the film lead to many interesting discussions. This film is highly recommended for all with an interest in Guatemalan/Latin American culture and history! The extra features are very interesting and provide additional perspective and insight into the making of the film and the history and objectives of Luis Argueta, the film's director. Enjoy!

Beautiful use of Time and Talent

This director seems to slip into action like a finely tailored shirt! I had no idea that he was more suited to dramatic movies than action. Jet Li makes the movie and should garner instant respect just for doing this movie. Excellent use of colors and the dialog is beautiful (Watch it in the original language, not english, it doesn't feel the same!) Most directors will die not coming up with something as amazing as this movie. His 2nd attempt at action is not quite as inspiring as this (Hous of Flying Daggers) but that is a review for another day.

The Parent Trap

The Parent Trap is an excellent example of what it takes to make a great movie. A good storyline, decent actors, and a positive sentiment to it. While it will never be compared with classic films such as Gone With the Wind and Lawrence of Arabia, it is still very impressive. A fine debut film for Lindsay Lohan, she'll look back on this as a great booster to her career. She was much more impressive than Hayley Mills was, which is saying a lot.
The storyline orginization was also a vast improvement from the original. The characters were more scrutinized, which makes it all the better. In the original, it tooks almost a half-hour before we learned the name of one of the twins! Pretty pathetic.
The girlfriend in the remake (Meredith) actually looks young, unlike in the original where the girlfriend (Vicki) looked older than the father.
The Boston-California connection is pathetic compared to the London-California connection. As a former Boston resident,I know that the original Parent Trap did a pathetic job in labeling the Boston twin. Even back in 1961, Boston Brahmins did not come close to resembling her. The London seen was an improvement. The Disney producers actually filmed the London scences in London! And the London twin actually resembled a typical London aristocrat.
I also enjoyed the fact that the parents felt sympathetic to the twins in the remake. In the original, they appeared more cold-hearted and reticent to accept them.
While the story is predictable, it is still great. A nice feel-good film which is a good substitute from bloody, action films. I recommend it to just about anyone.

Rosewood - movie DVD cover picture
One Of the most important movies of the 90's

ROSEWOOD: gone in two weeks at the theatre; what happened? Poor marketing and maybe everyone thought this was a black story. Based on a true story of a small town in Florida in the 1920s where a white woman falsely accused a black man of raping her (it was really a white lover who beat her) and it resulted in a lynch mob on all the black people. Excellent if not disturbing.

10 STARS!!!

WONDERFUL season of Stargate! But then, I think they're all wonderful! I'm appealing to the "powers that be" to release the Stargate seasons in North America at the same time as in the UK! There may be more fans there, not sure, but Europe and Australia and Canada seem to get ALL the Gate Cons, BUT there ARE fans here in the USA also!
Okay, no more soapbox :)
Every GATER should own this one!

Billy Jack

This movie struck a chord with a massive following of young generation followers when released in 1971. Tom Laughlin wrote, directed and stars in this (sometimes slow) movie about an ex-GI (Green Beret with karate moves and feet of fire) who is a half-indian returning to live on his reservation. Various rednecks attempt wild mustang rustling on his property and get kicked around (severely) for attempting so. The plot thickens as revenge is sought out. To worsen matters, the early 70's racism and hippie haters were at an all-time-high. Tom's best friend is a free-lance woman teacher who runs a school for runaway teens. Attendance is 100% due to her unique teaching style and is also the bullseye for the local town officials who want it shut down (oh yes! They have long hair, you see. They gotta go). This movie displays the narrow-mindedness of Viet Nam era southerners and Tom's attempt to maintain his Indian civility under extremely tense pressure. At one point ((my best part)) Tom walks directly at a gun, takes a hit, DOES NOT FLINCH and takes out the man with one single karate chop to the throught, killing him instantly. We don't need Arnold, Sylvester, Bruce Willis or Claude Van Dam with this guy around. This is one character deserving of 10-stars, not 5. The end really choked me up and I'm not one to be sentimental. The DVD has extra scene-by-scene audio narration supplied by Tom and Dolores. EXCELLENT BUY and a must see ---JIM

A Great Film!

No matter how old you are, this film is a thoroughly enjoyable adaptation of Jane Austen's novel.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam are brilliant as the two leads.
Wonderfully funny, with an excellent supporting cast, I don't think anyone could dislike this film or be moved by Mr. Knightly's declaration of love to Emma at the end.
One to watch.
