A death, played by Emma Thompson: A tour de force

WIT is an uncompromising look at death by cancer - and the therapy designed to cure it.
Emma Thompson is Vivian Bearing, a Doctor of Philosophy and an aloof professor of 17th century English poetry. Her special interest is the metaphysical verse of John Donne, to which she's dedicated her scholastic life at the expense of human relationships. Now, at 48, she's diagnosed with stage-four metastatic ovarian carcinoma. There is no stage five. Her oncologist, Dr. Kelekian (Christopher Lloyd), recommends an aggressive, 8-month regimen of treatment with an experimental drug - at full dose. Because of the expected onerous side effects, he challenges Vivian to show fortitude and perseverance, and, never a slacker, she promises a stiff upper lip.
Much of the film is comprised of a series of monologs by Bearing as she addresses the camera, and the audience, with reflections generated by her dry WIT about the chemotherapy's appalling toll on her person and the process by which it is being exacted. At one point, after Kelekian and a train of acolytes visit Vivian in her hospital room, a medical teaching ritual known as Grand Rounds, she wryly observes that the exercise was:
"... full of subservience, hierarchies, gratuitous displays, sublimated rivalries. I feel completely at home. It is just like a graduate seminar."
WIT is a pointed indictment of the generalized insensitivity of medical caregivers to the terminally-ill patient, who comes to represent little more than a specimen cup, a form covered with scribbled observations, or, at best, a career-enhancing article in a medical journal. Jason (Jonathan Woodward) plays the shallow, research-minded physician completing a clinical fellowship under Kelekian's direction. Bearing asks what his reaction is to patients who express apprehension or fright. His clueless response: "Of whom?"
As the course of Vivian's treatment - or is it torture? - draws to its conclusion, her only source of human warmth and sympathy becomes her primary care nurse, Susie (Audra McDonald), and her only pleasure the eating of a popsicle, the lone "food" tolerated by a GI tract ravaged by the anti-cancer drug.
One of the most heart-wrenchingly poignant scenes ever put on celluloid has to be one near the conclusion when Vivian is visited by her aged mentor E.M. Ashford (Eileen Atkins). I'm not ashamed to say that my eyes teared.
WIT isn't an easy film to watch. I suspect any person undergoing cancer therapy can relate to it, and should therefore be seen by anyone providing oncology care. Viewing WIT should be absolutely mandatory in every medical and nursing school in the country.
This performance by Emma Thompson is an Oscar-caliber tour de force. It's a sad commentary on the film industry and the audiences it feeds that WIT's producers had to release it as an HBO movie rather than one for the Big Screen because it would have otherwise been steamrollered at the box office by the mindless thrillers that appeal to the masses.

I Don't Usually Like These Types of Movies...

But this is an exception.

Edit: 4.5 Stars

I like the storyline. It is good, I'm just not usually into love stories... but this one is very good. But, the main reason I saw this movie was for the music. I really enjoy the music and I think that everyone did a very good job. The acting is good as well. I also liked the ending, where it left me hanging. I was thinking about it into the night and onto the next day. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and I think is one of my favorites of 2005. Buy/rent this DVD because you will certainly enjoy it.

70's realism not hollywood sensationalism

This film is very uneven and plays on the public's intelligence. The film was supposed to tell the story of Crowe falling into a deep affair with Ryan's character after her husband (Morse) is kidnapped. But due to test audiences hating the chemistry and idea of an affair between the Crowe and Ryan characters it was edited out! And the film seems half made, they had two options to redeem themselves; focus the action on Morse and Crowe's characters, as Crowe's character tries to rescue him, which would have made a truly great conflict film or focus on the affair and turn the film into a story of moral inbalance between Ryan's character wanting lust or the loyality she should feel for her husband and the abscence of a structured relationship. But instead we get odd dialogue and weird glares between Crowe and Ryan which feels only half complete. It leaves the concept of what happens in your mind should and deservedly so, should happen on screen. A good film it is not! It's a chop job on film and to the viewing audiences intelligence, forcely acted and badly scripted.

I was suprised at how great this movie was. I've been a fan of Brad Renfro for a long time and I knew he would be great. Telling Lies is not your run of the mill coming of age story.

Sacred Anime Cows will be Sacrificed

Fair warning beforehand: Either you will love this anime or you will hate it. There is no middle ground.
Excel Saga is a parody of the Japanese and Anime, and has no problems with going over the top. The title character, Excel, is a just-graduated high-schooler who is working for a top secret organization called A.C.R.O.S.S. which has a total of two members. However, Excel has three distinguising characteristics: the ability to speak a mile a second, will do anything to please Il Palazzo whom she loves, and is a basic ditz. Il Palazzo is the leader of A.C.R.O.S.S., whose goal is to conquer the city of "F", but is easily distracted. Hyatt (who is introduced in episode 2) is anemic and faints a lot. And then, there's Menchi, Excel's stray dog/emergency food supply who even sings the closing theme (with translation). Other characters include Pedro, next door neighbors (one of whom speaks only in subtitles), and Will of the Microcosmos.
Just how wierd is this anime? In the first episode, Excel dies about six times (including once in the first 30 seconds), but the series Deus Ex Machina, the Will Of The Microcosmos, sets things straight. Excel's mission is to kill the Koshi Rikdo, the manga artist who happens to draw the original Excel Manga. Other episodes include a space battle, B-movie, Japanese love-dating video game, and newspaper story.
BTW: The original Japanese voice of Excel is the same person who did the role of Usagi/Sailor Moon in the Sailor Moon series. (The role was tailor made for her.) Jessica Calvello did the English Excel, which put a real strain on her voice.
One bonus feature of the DVD is a "pop-up" notes which explain some of the in-jokes for us Americans.
Today's experiment...... failed.

GREAT DVD! Great show!

I just recently became a fan of Dog The Bounty Hunter and have become hooked on the show. The DVD is great, have watched it over and over, but I also agree, that I would love to have the entire season on DVD, as I have only seen a few of the shows. The only way they could improve the series is to show more of Leland!! (h-o-t-t!!) My favorite episode is Father and Son, of course, could watch Leland box for hours on end!
