Hey, Mr. Producer! The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh - movie DVD cover picture

For one tape to feature a performance by Tom Leher, a duet w/Sondheim and Andrew Lloyed Weber, an all-star cutting from "Side by side by sondheim" as well as great numbers from many other shows is unbelievable. Not that the tape isn't flawless--I can't say that I care much for Bob Avian's choreography--but for every "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two" (well sung, but horribly staged) there's a "Being Alive" (done by Bernadette Peters). Judi Dench proves that being an actor who can sing ("Send in the Clowns") is much more effective than being a signer who can act (Michael Ball's "Losing My Mind" which wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either).
I bought this tape somewhere else and payed more than I had wanted to for it, but once I got it home I knew I would've payed twice as much. If you're a Sondheim, Weber, Boubil-Schoneberg, Bernadette Peters, Tom Leher, Jonathan Pryce, or just plain musical theatre fan, you MUST but this video.

2 is even better than 1

I love Intital D. The storyline gets even better on the second. I can live without Iggy but I guess hes suppose to be the comic relief of the Anime. Anyway this is a must have for car lovers!

magnificent playing of magnificent music

What we have is three suites per DVD with Rostropovich giving short talks about the suite he is going to record next before it is presented. The talks are in Russian and subtitles are available. The sound is quite fine.

Pumping Iron (25th Anniversary Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

Whenever I get bored with working out, I rent "Pumping Iron", the 1976 documentary that introduced the world to the sport of bodybuilding and its Grande Poo-bah Arnold Schwarzenegger. I've seen this movie so many times that I really should buy it. I mean, I've got the darn thing practically memorized!
Basically, the filmmakers shot footage of the competitors for the 1975 Mr. Universe (the amateur competition) and Mr. Olympia (the professional competition). What you see is the dizzing highs, the debilitating lows, and the creamy middles! You get an up close and personal look at the sport itself, its varying philosophies, and what it takes to be a champion. The filmmakers go from Gold's Gym in Venice, CA to Brooklyn, NY to the island of Sardinia off the Italian peninsula and finally to Pretoria, South Africa to give you the inside scoop! ...
One thing the film does effectively is going in depth an analysing the personalities of the various athletes. Amateur Mike Katz comes across as the most troubled bodybuilder. Still haunted by the memories of being taunted by the other kids at school, he decided to hit the weights (and the horsepills) big time to "show them". It's too bad they didn't film his high school reunion! Can he overcome his demons and his Mr. Universe competitor Ken Waller? Watch and see!
Lou Ferrigno is the most sympathetic bodybuilder. He's a man who overcame his childhood deafness to be a top competitor (and, later, The Incredible Hulk) and he's blessed with an enormous physical presence. However, his dad (a retired NY cop) has decided to take over his training for the Olympia. Does father know best?
Franco Colombo is also pretty cool. He came to the United States from Italy with only his muscles and his dreams of glory. ...
Last--and certainly not least--the most charismatic figure in this film is the defending Mr. Olympia champion, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold was far and away the best bodybuilder in the world in the 1970s, and his ruthless confidence--and wickedly sly sense of humor--makes him a treat to watch. Arnold is ..., but he's incredibly charming. It's easy to see why--with his attitude--he succeeded at bodybuilding and the movie business (and why he *may* succeed at politics if he so chooses). It's truly a study of the mindset of a successful person.
Anyhoo, some of you girly-men may get grossed out by huge, greasy men in posing trunks flexing their massive muscles. All I can say is that steroids were legal in 1975 and that bodybuilding then wasn't the drugged-out freak show that it is now. I find "Pumping Iron" to be endlessly inspirational. In fact, just thinking about it makes me want to train harder! This is a must-buy for any individual who seriously exercises.

Breath of Fresh Air On TV...

Truly a great TV series. It makes even the best shows on network TV pale in comparison. Great writing, complimented by convincing acting creates an intense, funny, suspenseful, action oriented story about a very complex man and his two "Families." Nothing is black and white here, and often times is not what it seems. This is a show that will be revered for years to come, just like the movies that inspired it...

Wonderful special edition

This dvd is just as wonderful as the extended edition of the Fellowship of the Rings. Fans of the books will be delighted by the extended scenes. As a huge movie fan, I found the special features wonderful, as they go through the whole filmmaking process. The Best of Kylie In Concert!!

Whether you are an old fan or a new one, this concert DVD will not disappoint!! From the song selection to the production values, this show is great. I actually purchased this from Australia as an import and bought a multi-regional DVD player just to play this DVD. The extra cost was no waste. This is finally being released for North American DVD players.
This concert tour was from early 2001 in support of her then current cd release "Light Years". Nine songs from that cd are performed during this show. For the new Kylie fans, yes, "Can't Get You Out of My Head" is performed as her new upcoming release. "Light Years" is one her best cds and contains a lot up very uptempo and sometimes campy songs. The concert reflects this feel. Kylie surrounds herself with a lot of lights, color and 11 attractive dancers. Not that she needs a lot of support however. This isn't filled with a bunch of head-tossing, bootie shaking, lipsynching performing like some of her contemporaries. Kylie shows how she can be an overall live entertainer, as well as being a writer on many of her newer songs.
The one and only disappointment was the fact that she never performed "Locomotion", which was her biggest hit in the U.S., but then again this tour was never done in the U.S. On Kylie's earlier material, she does a good job of updating it with a more contemporary sound while not making it unrecognizable nor disappointing.
Bonus material includes backstage footage of Kylie and interviews with dancers and stagehands. This truly gives you an idea of the genuine person Kylie is. Her admiration by those around her seems sincere, which explains her longevity. Kylie has been a huge success for 14 years all around the world except in the U.S. and it's about time she's given the recognition she deserves, so buy this and enjoy!!
