This movie is a HOOT! poor Doctor (richard dryphas) gets so frustrated with good sweet-natured inocent BOB. bill murry is great. bob is someone you want to go away, but the family, ziggy the kid, and the mom (whatshername off airplane) take him in and love him. bob and his fish... (giggle) i just love this movie. the lake... teaching ziggy to swim... the rain... choking on shimp... baby steps... "what are you the most afraid of?"... bob telling jokes to the staff at the hospital... the neighbors in the canoe!! LOL - so many things to love in this movie! good clean fun for the whole family! love it. (and my darling Norman loves it too!)

The Incredibles (Widescreen 2-Disc Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Pixar has out-done itself !

Wow ! What an incredible animation movie from Pixar. It is just full of wit, superb settings and animation, an eye for detail, and works at all levels. Most of the humour in The Incredibles lampoons the "superhero" concept and how it would translate in real life, with the constraints of daily life, aging, social interactions, and so on. It also sends up spy movies almost as extensively. There is a sequence where Mr. Incredible distracts guards by throwing a giant rock at one of them, which is just precious.

If there is one thing wrong with The Incredibles, you could say it is the ideological underpinning. Basically, the movie takes a positive attitude towards the idea that the Incredibles are "special people" and that trying to reproduce their powers through technology and giving them to the masses is evil. It's hard not to make an analogy with gun control and elitism of the worst kind, much like what has been leveled against Star Wars from some quarters.

In the end, though, it becomes pretty irrelevant in the top-notch and inspired visuals, the jokes that almost always strike true, and just the wealth of ideas in there. Everything rings true. The only movie comparable to it is The Iron Giant, made by the same director. Now if only we could get more animation like this...

State of Grace - movie DVD cover picture
A character acting free for all

Phil Joanou had an incredible palette of talent to work with in creating this dark and troublesome work of art. Even the lesser parts are filled with personalities such as John Turturro, Robin Wright (then without the Penn), RD Call, John C. Reilly and Burgess Meredith. The score composed by Ennio Morricone has a haunting, eerie saunter, infected with an obvious full note that jerks you out of its hypnotic trance. Watching this film in 2005 takes one back to a number of other great and powerful films of the early 90's that used the noir anti-heroes as their central character. Comparing State of Grace to Abel Ferrara pieces such as Bad Lieutenant and King of New York would not be far-fetched.
Penn's performance as Terry is wrought with inner turmoil, culminating in his bedside confession to Wright's Kathleen. While explaining Hell's Kitchen and it's irk to Turturro he wanes "we're Irish, all we know how to do is drink," a telling testimony that typifies the culture soon to be taken over by the newly christened Clinton inner-city development. His inward reflection is mirrored by the exuberance of Jackie, played with perfection by Oldman. With his cavalier swagger he seems to lack the part of the genetic code that relays fear. Jackie takes risk to new levels while seriously jeopardizing older brother Frankie's (Harris) plans to form an alliance with elements of the Italian mob. Harris's taught composure throughout the film is a fine study in character definition; a true Jeckyl and Hyde persona, playing the suburban family man by day, and slitting the throats of childhood friends by night.
We've seen little in the form of feature offerings from Joanou, aside from U2's Rattle and Hum and Heaven's Prisoners. It is interesting to note his continuing contribution to U2's music video collection, as well as a number of TV commercials. His close association with the mega band lent a big break in acquiring music rights for his 2000 production Entropy.

Mio In the Land of Far away

Bosse Ohlsson is an average boy living in Stockholm with his horrid Aunt Edna and Uncle Sixten. On one particularly cruel day he goes out with his best friend to fly kites and on the way home(when he was already late), boys take his hat and get it dirty. Aunt Edna makes such a bad fuss that Bosse decides to run away to find his father. He visits the local shop and the owner gives him an apple and a letter to mail. He stops at a bench area and just as he's about to eat the apple, it turns golden and a spirit comes out of a bottle lying on the ground. It turns out that the spirit is from the land of faraway and has been sent to bring Bosse there to meet his father. Bosse goes to the land of faraway and his finds out his real name is Mio and he has a horse named Miramis. Joy is short lived though because he finds out that an evil night Kato has kidnapped all the children and is keeping them prisoner outside of the land. Since Mio is the only child of royal blood, he must journey with Jum Jum and Miramis to save the children and destroy Kato.
I love this movie as it is one of my childhood favorites. It's a wonderful tale and should be more honored.

I'm really just now getting into anime and really haven't ever really strayed from the Miyazaki films (Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service). I was at work one day and was reading the anime section of PLAY magazine and saw they gave it a 8.5 and thought I'd check it out. One word: GREATNESS. This is a very good series. For the record, I can't see how this got TV14, it's not very graphic but still point-blank headshots is very violent. By far the best episode is episode 3 (Boy), where Rico says "I am Sorry". This is very good and I recommend it highly to anyone who likes anime.

Great learning tool!

A friend actually recommended this DVD to us with rave reviews. We trusted their opinion and bought it. We've had the video for about 2 months now and my daughter (22 months old) loves watching it over and over again. She easily learned what the different letters look like and the sounds they make. I highly recommend this video to any parent.

Great fights and stuff being thrown.

AWESOME...That's what this movie is. It's got my favorite Spider-Man villian, Doc Oc, using his arms to beat the crap out of Tobey Maguire.
This has the most awesome super hero fight scenes and the best dangling old lady scene I've seen in a while. Not better than the first movie, but not worse, just different. I think there was less fighting in the second, though...I just paid to watch a giant fight, which I wish it would have been. Too much plot. But when there wasn't plot, it picked right back up into cars being thrown...so don't worry pro wrestling-watchers...you'll get your fix.

Walking With Prehistoric Beasts - movie DVD cover picture
a Serious look at the worlds that were

I finally got the third instalment of the "walking with" series. I couldn't wait til this film was released on DVD when I caught it on Discovery channel. First let me say that I am glad there are those out there who like to treat the portayal of prehistoric beasts seriously and not as Disney talking characters or Jurassic Park man-eating monsters. The documentary style of Prehistoric Beasts attests to how much the filmmakers value the paleontological finds of recent years. Now is the film %100 accurate in every aspect? No. Is every animated frame perfect with regards to special FX? not really. But as a whole it is a wonderfull learning and entertaining piece. The scenes with the giant rhino ancestors are awe-inspiring. The saber tooth cat comes to life like never before, and of course you have the famous mammoths stumping around the prehistoric badlands. Even those interested in movie FX will want this DVD along with the other 2 in the series as part of their library.
