Ken Howard's signature role on DVD :-)

Ironically this series takes place in a high school, and I was in Junior High (1978-1981) when CBS aired it. But still a lot a young kid like me was able to learn and grow with. Ken Howard plays Ken Reeves (a native of my home town of all places: Bayside, New York, in reality Howard was born in Manhasset just over the Nassau County line) a not so lucky forward (I think) for the Chicago Bulls who constantly injures his knee. After the last injury at which he injured his pride a little as well, Ken hangs it up and suddenly gets reunited with his old high school team mate and friend Jim Willis (Jason Bernard in the pilot, Ed Bernard thereafter) who is the principal of George Washington Carver High School in a majority black neighborhood. To make long story short, Willis asks Reeves would he be interested in being Carver's new basketball coach. After thinking about it, he accepts despite learning from Willis' vice principal Sybil Buchanan (Joan Pringle) that the majority of the team are studying to be hoodlums and dropouts (a number of them have juvenile records already). With the support of his sister and brother in law (as well as Willis), Ken keeps the team in check, and helps the "losers" at heart become winners (on and sometimes off the court). The name of the series comes when Ken says to the team at the end of the pilot that he will always be behind them to which player Morris Thorpe (Kevin Hooks) replies "yeah like a white shadow". The name sticks, and thus a very nice series develops. The stories focus on 1 or more of the team members getting in trouble with the law or other sources, Ken's love life (which is worse than his pro career was: 1 episode I think in this set features a relationship with another teacher who moonlights as a stripper and the team members in her class find out), and his being accepted by other students and faculty members. Very good series, I hope all 3 sets come out quickly.

The Best Movie I Have Ever Seen

Words cannot describe this movie. You must go out and see it. Jodie Foster's best experience I ever seen. Matthew McConaughey is also excellent. Carl Sagan would not be disappointed END

Buy this film

Bought this film largely on the reviews here. Being fairly young I haven't seen many films where Newman was establishing himself. He puts on a fantastic performance here. Basically the standard rebel film except Newman doesn't act without a cause. Put into jail for a seemingly minor violation now, the system he encounters grates against his nature. You watch as the system wears him down and he wears the system down. In the end it is a kind of stalemate where both win and both lose. George Kennedy, who I admit seems like more of a comedy side from the movies I've seen, is just unbelievable. It is a shame he hasn't played more dramatic roles. Lovely film.

Die Hard Trilogy - movie DVD cover picture
Die hard kicks hard

The Die Hard Trilogy may be the best action/adventure series of the last two decades (vastly more enjoyable than the sporadic Bond films, and the self-indulgent Lethal Weapon movies), and a lion-share of the credit must go to Bruce Willis, the wise-cracking, superhuman yet humane hero. Willis became a superstar with the first Die Hard, and he is riveting as John McClain, the New York cop in L.A. With the always watchable Bonnie Bedelia as his wife, and the flashy Alan Rickman as the mercenary/entrepenour, the film is a non-stop rollercoaster ride! Die Hard 2 lacks Rickman's charisma as the villain, but Willis again gives a dynamite performance, and Bedelia is even better than in the first film. Spectacular special effects abound! Die Hard With a Vengence, the weakest of the trio, was originally intended as Lethal Weapon 4, but was rewritten for Willis and Samuel Jackson. Bedelia's absence hurts the third film a great deal, but Jeremy Irons (as Rickman's equally greedy brother) is an excellent villain. Incredible pyrotechnics highlight this film, and Willis is still a joy...And rumor has it, there WILL be a Die Hard 4!

Greatest "Documentary" Comedy Ever!

Granted that is a pretty specific genre, but Kevin Smith spends around 4 hours tellings hilarious stories and sharing his life. Everone I know who has seen this loved it. Well worth watching several times and extremely funny from the first meeting with his wife, the creation of a never used superman script, and how to make a movie on credit cards. Rent it and you'll just need to end up buying it later.

I saw this movie totally expecting to hate it and omigod! it totally changed my view of life. I even bought another ticket after the first show and bought an extra large chcolate bag and a jumbo popcorn case. I am so totally leaving diet coke; skinniness isn't the thing that defines who you are, it's what you do. The jokes were incredible, I laughed out loud and even choked on my popcorn twice. Security almost kicked me out; I was enjoying myself so much. Another movie I'd totally recommend is I HEART HUCKABEES. This is my favorite movie.

P.S.I even gained 15 pounds after seeing this movie!!!! Hooray!!!!

Pink Flamingos - movie DVD cover picture
"This is where they touch their uninspired little organs."

The infamous "Pink Flamingos" is the John Waters film that first drew attention to his warped talent, and it is probably the film for which he will be remembered. Divine (Glenn Milstead) is in top form and stars as the "filthiest person alive," Babs Johnson. Babs lives in an abandoned trailer somewhere near Baltimore with her perverted son, Cracker, and her deranged mother, Edie, the Egg Lady. Edie (Edith Massey) lives in a giant playpen inside the trailer where she consumes large numbers of eggs while dressed only in her underwear. Miss Cotton (Mary Vivian Pearce) forms the other member of the Babs Johnson gang.
Meanwhile, Raymond and Connie Marble (David Lochary and Mink Stole) operate a black market adoption agency from their disgusting cellar. The Marbles covet Divine's title of "the filthiest person alive," and so Babs Johnson is their number one enemy. Babs, who is "forced to go underground" is sniffed out of hiding by a spy (Cookie Mueller), and once the Marbles know the location of Bab's trailer, "the battle of filth" begins.
If you like camp, then you may enjoy this film. The dialogue is amazing, and the film still has the capacity to shock more than 30 years after it was made, so be warned. If you are offended by the more mainstream films of John Waters (Serial Mom, Polyester), then don't watch this one, and if you've never watched a John Waters film before, "Pink Flamingos" is not a good place to start. I can't count the number of times I've watched this film, and I'll never grow tired of it. John Waters is my hero, and the humour in this film brings this fact home to me again. Waters juxtaposes real perversions (Raymond Marvel's "perverted urges," and the kidnapped women in the basement are two good examples of deviant, criminal behaviour), and puts these elements on an equal standing with ridiculous perversions--Divine and Cracker foul the Marvel's furniture by licking it, and consequently the Marvel's furniture rejects them. This juxtaposition of the truly perverted with the truly strange creates a unique comic twist. This film is not for the queasy or the faint-hearted. It is about revolting people doing revolting things. Don't miss the Marvel's underwear scene, please. The film also has a fantastic soundtrack that stands well on its own--even if you haven't the courage to watch the film--displacedhuman
