notorious - hitchcock's best suspense/romance

I'll make this brief, Notorious happens to be one of Hitchcock's best suspense/romance films. The story of a imfamous party girl with questionable country alliances becomes a spy for the usa and goes so far as becoming involved with the enemy for uncle sam's sake. Against her own will and the man she loves (Cary), she does things against her better judgement. I won't say any more, so as not to ruin the wonderful Hitchcock plot. Although i will take acception to Brick King's review that Cary Grant was somehow showing disgust in his scenes with Ingrid Bergman. The dichotomy of an intelligence agent that has feelings for someone who may be willing to commit treason shows a level of acting that cary grant fans were not use to seeing. I think what Mr. Kng's saw as disgust towards Ms. Bergman was a geniune character struggle by Mr. Grant, worthy of an oscar nomination.

Generation X'ers get ready for a great time!

whats better than the famous words "yo joe" yeah sure this is not as good artistically as animation today, but for its time this was great! on top of that whats better than a bunch of joes battling cobra, the subject matter alone makes this movie worth while. when i saw this coming out it brings the great memories of the "cobra-la" and serpentor battling it out with the joes. this is surely a hit and a grat collector's piece for those of you who loved all the joes from snake eyes to tunnel rat and beyond. finally we can all stop looking... for a betamax player to play your old gijoe tape on and can now watch it on dvd... whata great movie.

Another charming story

More than anything else, this is a delightful, gentle story, beautifully animated. It's exciting, but without [much] violence or dark edge that might upset younger viewers. Also, like at least two of Miyazaki's other animations, it centers on a resolute little girl separated from her family.
That recurring character must have some personal meaning for Miyazaki, but I'm not sure what. Even though the girl appears in several of his films, she doesn't really repeat herself; she really is new each time. Miyazaki also has some fascination with flight in general and airships in particular. They appeared in "Kiki's Delivery Service" and have a central place in this movie. I admit, they're quite amazing: majestic, wallowing dinosaurs from the early age of human flight. Maybe that's enough.
The only thing that left me puzzled was the floating island of Laputa itself. The sky-city with that name appears in "Gulliver's Travels." The former lords of Miyazaki's Laputa risked becoming tyrants by strength of their weaponry. Gulliver's Laputa was also known to crush, literally crush rebellion among its vassal territories. Any other connection between the two Laputas escaped me, though.
This is another cute movie from Miyazaki. It doesn't get by on just cuteness, though. It's not especially deep, but adults shouldn't be bored watching it with their kids. Or, like me, watching it without them.

Finding Nemo (Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The greatest fish-tale to date

In a summer of super-hype crowded with Angels, Neos and Green Hulks, only a small orange and white clown fish offers quality worthy of the hype. Where those others were either mired in simplicity, quantum intelligence or in its own muscle-bound angst, FINDING NEMO emerges as a practically perfect film. The Disney Organization has really fine tuned its marketing for this film as well, keeping its audience from being annoyingly overwhelmed.
The story of Nemo follows an over-protective father's search for his abducted son. That is a pretty serious issue and the film handles it with the utmost respect. That makes the journey all the more believable, even as it is taken by a couple animated fish. And what animation it is. Never has life underwater been so thoroughly or gorgeously depicted. The character designs and overall color pallet are used to great effect, losing color during the more intense scenes and restoring it for brighter elements.
The voice-acting matches the designs very well from Marlin marvelously voiced by Albert Brooks, Short-term memory challenged Dory played by Ellen Degeneres, down to Austin Pendelton as a fish-tank dweller. The overall sound design is wonderful, as underwater scenes never abandon their atmosphere. A creative musical score by Thomas Newman caps it all off.
Having seen the film only once, I am not yet prepared to say this is the best offering from the folks at PIXAR (I have seen the others at least 3 times each). So, I look forward to a nice DVD release so I can finish up this review.

Altman's apotheosis!!!

On the whole, Altman's best film, and that's really saying something. Along with Goodfellas, one of the best films of the 90's -- American or otherwise. Funny, incisive, byzantine and brilliant.

This will make you a fan

I had only been a casual Talking Heads fan thanks to Burning Down The House, I Zimbra and Cities. When I saw this film for the first time, I was hooked and became something of a fanatic. To this day, I mourn the band's break up.
Starting with David Byrne and his guitar, the film opens with Pyscho Killer. This would seem an unlikely choice to start off a concert but Byrne shows the key to putting on a good show is knowing how to draw the audience in, no matter what the material. With each selection, we're introduced to another member of the band and increasingly funky songs. By the time, Bernie Worrell hits the keyboards for Slippery People, you'll be dancing around in your living room.
Although Byrne is unquestionably the star of this film, you'll be riveted by the auxillary band members Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales and the back up singers. The show is simple yet builds upon layers to get the audience's attention and keep it. Today's young performers as well as their audience should be required to view this movie to see how a real concert is done.

Great Film

Finally on DVD. With regard to the cropping, is it possible that the original cut was 1.85:1 and when they released it on TV they actually "opened it up" to fit the television, so you could actually see more of the film than was intended (a good example is in "Coma" when you can see the microphones overhead in the TV version) and now it is back into its original state? They do this with a lot of films. Just wondering.

I hate doctors, man!

A refreshing variant of the rash of late 90s teen semi-comedies (American Pie, She's All That, Never Been Kissed, etc etc), SLC Punk provides a unique perspective of the formative years. It's well written, well directed, well acted, and well shot. Highlights include the (almost) nonstop humor and an acid trip scene potent enough to give you flashbacks. In between this is a strong storyline that provides food for thought on being true to your ideals. SLC Punk is well worth your time and your cash.
