not kane! this is the greatest film period.

For mankind to have almost lost The Passion of Joan of Arc forever to censorship and fire is a thought unbearable to me, for this is the greatest artistic achievement I've ever been presented to date. One wonders how much of great literature, art, and other intellectual achievements of this caliber by those of earlier times are lost forever now, never to be inherited by our and future generations to appreciate and ponder.
One has to be neither French nor Christian, though it must certainly add to the experience, to be profoundly and shatteringly moved by actress Renee Falconetti's portrait of a nineteen-year-old peasant woman who laid down her life for God and France. The silent motion picture consists almost entirely of close-up frames of the face of Falconetti's Joan, of which her eyes tell so much, and I mean, viva France, so much.
The saying "eyes are windows to the soul" becomes wholly demonstrated here in what I and many others believe is the greatest acting ever filmed. One learns that words, despite our time's heavy reliance, are utterly inadequate in comparison on such matters concerned here. "The book is so much better than the movie!!" and I'm the first one to blurt those words out, but how can any author, in any language, possibly express with words what Falconetti here beams straight to our senses, wordlessly? This is where the motion picture and theater can shine over literature, with a total, mutual commitment by actors and audiences alike.
Whatever opinions you may have of the historic Jehanne d'Arc, and whether you go along with the multitudes of contemporary political movements who use her name in their causes, I beg you to watch this piece, in the name of humanity, for what's presented here is beyond judgment, and utterly indescribable.

Great Picture, but watch out!

Like the reviewer from Spokane, I saw this film when it was in theatrical release in 1959 or maybe 1960. It blew my socks off and I've never forgotten it. I've looked for it in videotape occasionally and would love to view it again to see whether it still impresses me after 40 years of maturing.

Predator (Full-Screen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Hunting season is on...

When a helicopter goes down in Latin America, Major Dutch Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his elite rescue team are the first to be called to track down and recover the survivors. The jungle is filled with enemy guerilla forces, and something even more deadly. It hunts for sport, it has the chameleonic ability to remain unseen, and it's after Schaefer and his men. As members of his team are brutally killed by the Predator, Schaefer realizes that the only way to survive as the hunted is to hunted the hunter. Co-starring Minnesota govenor Jesse Ventura, Predator is a film unlike any other. It is undoubtedly among the best movies of its genre.

An underrated animated classic on a great DVD!

This is the story of a Ant named "Z" ( voiced by Woody Allen) who has problems with life in the colony in Central Park New York City, until one day he meets the beautiful princess Bala ( Sharon Stone)walks into his life and he falls in love with. Z decides to switch places with his best soldier friend "Weaver" ( Sylvester Stallone) for a day leads him on adventures from being a false war hero from a Termite war to having Bala with him to search for a fabled city called " Insectopia" then to face with the sinister General Mandible ( Gene Hackman).

A brilliant CGI animated comedy that is a total triumph from 1998 and is Dreamworks's first CGI animated movie! There are also the voices of Jennifer Lopez, Christopher Walken, Dan Ackroyd, Jane Curtin and Anne Bancroft that provide co-stars, the graphics are totally convicing even on looking from the ants's point of view of the world from their perspectvie with a great soundtrack.

The DVD's perfection with quality sound & picture and the extras are also nice such as audio commentary, three featurettes, Trailer, TV Spots, production notes and Cast & crew bio.

A must have for animation DVD collectors!

INCREDIBLE! Do not miss this. Anyone will like it.

Tom Hanks proves himself as an executive producer. I sat down one Saturday morning at 10am planning to watch the first part or two, but was so enthralled that I ended up watching the complete set. Hanks does an incredible job of story telling about the space program, detailing not just the technical challenges, but the political ones as well. His intermixing of historical footage and original footage is seamless and unobtrusive; a great job of story telling.
This is what television was meant to be: entertaining and educational without the violence and sensationalism. This movie is a living legacy not only to the men and women of the space program, but to Tom Hanks as a producer, and as a great human being. Well done.

Cirque du Soleil - Quidam - movie DVD cover picture
Another wonderful experience

I've seen Quidam twice in New York City, and once in Washington DC, each time was more amazing than the one preceding it. The music, the visual, and the general atmosphere. Almost surreal to the eye, you shouldn't miss this one!! It's probably best if you saw it live, but watching it on DVD is always a last resort. Truly amazing!! Also, don't forget to catch other Cirque on video such as Saltimbanco (not so good on video, too many dizzying visual effects used), and Nouvelle Experience (excellent even on video). Cirque is really establishing itself, don't be surprised if you start seeing a permanent Cirque show at a town near you!!

Sci Fi Love Story

"Starman" has long been one of my favorite films, I fell in love with it when I saw the orginal theatrical release, still loved it years later when it made the rounds on "Movie of the Week", and now after all these years I still love it on DVD. You can find tons of films about love and about life from the stars but it's rare indeed to find both in the same film. I can only add my praise to that of the other fans of this beautiful film; great performances, great story, great soundtrack. I only wish there could've been more "extras" for the DVD release, otherwise "Starman" is the type of film that made Hollywood the "dream" capital of the world.

TraditIonal holiday classic that never grows old.

The original "Miracle on 34th Street" is a splendid holiday classic that has audiences stunned. Lawyer John Payne works on a case to prove to everyone that Macy's Department Store Santa (Edmund Gwynn) is the one and only Santa Claus. This case reshapes the lives of Macy's employee Maureen O'Hara and daughter Natalie Wood. It is a truly magical and inspiring Christmas film that never ages which is perfect for future generations. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
