no conspiracy

There are many problems with a conspiracy theory in this case. Firstly, is the number of people that would have to have been involved...literally countless amounts. And yet all the people who come forward and say they were part of this conspiracy are always easily refuted. Many were no where near where they say they were, some have changed their stories over the years to fit the current conspiracy, and still others are just attention seekers looking for their place in history and willing to say anything to achieve that. Another problem is that there is this idea that if someone covers something up, it is automatically because there is a vast conspiracy. I don't know about you guys, but I try to cover my own ass when I mess up. I do it frequently and yet I have never been part of a vast right wing or left wing conspiracy.
People who cling onto this conspiracy crap really need to come up with a clear and concise argument. None of this crap about an Oswald clone or someone stealing the body of Kennedy. The problem is that there is no possible way a conspiracy happened at the level that has been too often reported. The idea that makes the most sense is that Oswald acted alone. If Reagan's assassin had been successful and then someone had killed him, there would be all the same BS stories about how there was a vast conspiracy against Reagan. Because we have the luxury of a living would-be assassin, we all know he was a wacko...just like Oswald. Some weird disturbed lonely kid who wanted attention. Is it THAT crazy to think that Kennedy was killed by a loser? Obviously there are people who try to distort history and say all this BS about Kennedy getting out of Vietnam. Earth to idiots!!! He got us in Vietnam in the first place. Now I'm not saying he was a bad president, but he really wasn't everything he is blown up to be nowadays. He was not starting a revolution. It wasn't because of civil rights. He was a moderate president!!! It was because some wacko, with American military training, decided to kill an American president.

Menudo is in our Hearts Forever

I never got to see Menudo in concert as a teenager, so this video (dvd) was fantastic to watch, because it gave me a chance to be in the front row, and brought back so many memories for me of the group. I was most in awe of Charlie, but the other guys were great! I knew all their birthdays, could write their signatures, and still have my giant scrapbook of memorabilia. I have to credit them with teaching me more Spanish than I learned in high school! Anyway, the concert is great .. the start to all the boy bands to follow, but there will never be another MENUDO.

Definitely a classic!

This 80's flick needs to be in every movie collection. Especially for all young girls who are trying to fit in but at the same time wanting to keep your individuality. Mollie Ringwald is excellent in this film as she challenges those characters like the extremely annoying James Spader and the snotty girls in her gym class that think she is weird. Duckie is awesome as her best friend and major supporter, along with her friend, Iona.
I cry at the end when she and "Blaine" are in the parking lot at the gym and he tells her "I love you."
Classic, classic, classic.

Two Gingers!

This is the only movie I know of that has both Tina "Ginger" Louise, AND Judith Baldwin who played Ginger in the TV reunion Rescue From Gilligan's Island. Add the Beautiful Katharine Ross, weird "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" type story, and 70's fashions, and you've got a night of pure entertainment.

Love Actually (Full Screen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The perspectives on this are amazing

This is a "love it or hate it" movie if I've ever seen one. And I'll say this now to get it out of the way: the 8 component stories do at times feel rushed and unfinished, Hugh Grant doesn't pass as particularly impressionable as the PM and Bill Nighy ("Billy Mack") can't sing worth a crap. Despite all that, however, I loved this movie.

I think the 8 mixed stories intertwine well to witness the full spectrum of how love can build us up or tear us apart. And we see love at different levels and stages, from Sam's infatuation with a classmate to newlyweds to Harry's near-infidelity. Many complaints revolve around the assertion that the stories are too far-fetched... but hey, if you can't "let go" somewhat when you watch a movie you may as well not watch any movies ever.

The movie is also a very good comedy; to me it's even more comedy than romance. I am a huge fan of British comedy and this film has a very British sensibility. It has a warm "real" feeling to it that the average Hollywood production lacks. Adding to that is the beginning and closing series of video clips showing people reuniting at Heathrow and showing that "love actually is all around."

Another factor to a great, memorable movie -- a subliminal factor, if you will -- is the music. And this movie features some fantastic music; from the classics "Jump (for My Love)" and "God Only Knows" to Olivia Olson's admirable performance of "All I Want for Christmas is You" to the uplifting main theme.

The only downfall that I would have corrected if I had the chance would be to make it another 20 minutes longer, to the end of developing certain segments further. Nonetheless, I have watched it several times on HBO and have recommended it to my friends because it has become one of my favorite recent movies.

Lastly, I feel compelled to address the negative comments: many of those people must have been sorely burned to the point that they can't even enjoy a movie about our most influential emotion. And some are just wacky -- did you read the one by "germania"? Thankfully, most people are not as stone-hearted.

Mature political thriller

I read the book, which I loved, and was gratified at how well and faithfully John Malkovich brought it to the screen. The acting was superb, especially Javier Bardem. This is not a movie for an audience looking for the typical Hollywood thriller and would be much too violent for those seeking a love story. The tension builds slowly as the police realize that years of apparently unrelated violence were in fact the beginnings of a revolution that is rapidly gathering steam. The violent acts become increasingly ominous as dead dogs are found hung from lampposts, schoolchildren gun down government officials, and the revolutionaries advertise their inevitable arrival in the capitol by staging power blackouts accompanied by surreal fireworks displays. The book and movie are very unusual but this is not an 'art' movie. It plays as a straightforward story of a hunt for the revolutionary leader with a subplot of the chief detective's growing love for his daughter's dance teacher. It is one of the best political thrillers I've seen and, again, the acting was terrific.

Mon Oncle - Criterion Collection - movie DVD cover picture
Thank you, Criterion, for bringing Tati back from obscurity!

Tati is undoubtably one of the great filmmakers of all time. And this despite the fact that he only released three films under his total control (M. HULOT'S HOLIDAY, MON ONCLE, and PLAYTIME), all available now on Criterion DVD. What is even more impressive is that, unlike the great Howard Hawks, who successfully directed movies of every genre, Tati's accomplishment was to sucessfully document the development of the modern world under the guise of three simple, light-hearted comedies. From the whimsical near-silent classic HOLIDAY, to the clash of the modern with the traditional in MON ONCLE, to the crushing approach of metal and glass over the classical world in PLAYTIME, Tati made brilliant films that, while obstensibly comedies, offer some of the most insightful commentary on the joy of life to be found in cinema. No movies I can think of are more deserving of DVD presentation. Each film is a masterpiece that warrants repeated viewings (PLAYTIME being particularily challenging).
MON ONCLE, a popular favorite, and beautifully restored here in saturated colors, is a comedy that comments on the threatened loss of the enjoyment of the simple things in life due to the demands of the modern world. Or at least those demands that have been self-inflicted. It is just as prescient today as the it must have been in 1958, maybe more so. Terry Jones' nice opening commentaries comment on Tati's carefully constructed sight-gags, but I find Tati's subtle commentaries on the modern world to be more interesting. Note, for instance, that the workers who are perpetually demolishing older buildings are encroaching towards Hulot's charming neighborhood as the film progresses.
I cannot recommend Tati's films highly enough. And for those who collect Criterion releases but are somewhat unsure of this sudden rash of releases by a relatively unknown French auteur, I say jump right in, and if you can't stand Tati's films after several viewings, e-mail me and I'll buy them from you!
P.S. The additional feature alone is worth the price for Tati fans.
