missing the picture

If you went to 'The Village' expecting The Seventh Sense, then you had the wrong movie, but this film will be debated in sociology, psychology, and political Science classes for awhile. It explores important questions about the structure of societies, cultures, and subcultures and looks at the myths used to perpetuate the immune system of groups and our participation in them. With its archetypical images of town vs forrest, watchtower and boundaries, color as uniform or taboo, and some subtle characterizations of repressed fear and desire, it is easily one of the best films of the year. The porch scene with Howard and Phoenix ( will you dance at our wedding?) is remarkably sensual and has to be one of the most understated romantic scenes to come out of the movies since Bogart and Hepburn.

This IS Entertainment!!!

When the DVD format appeared several years ago & the studios began rolling out their catalogs on DVD, "That's Entertainment" was scheduled to be released but was shelved for a future release date. Well, the wait is now over & it was well worth the wait.In addition, "That's Entertainment: Part 2" & That's Entertainment: Part III" were released as well. You can purchase these movies separately but for all of you who remember these gems & are planning to buy them, you absolutely must get the box set which not only has the three movies, it has a bonus fourth disc "That's Entertainment: Treasures From The Vault" which is only available in this "Trilogy" set. The packaging is normal (cardboard box, plastic cases, single sheet insert) but the movies themselves are gorgeous! the colors are vibrant which shows off a lot of what went into making the films & the sound has been given a Dolby Digital 5.1 upgraded. If you love the original MGM musicals, your DVD collection will be incomplete without these movies. If you love these movies, Your "That's Entertainment" collection will be incomplete unless you buy the "Trilogy" box. Thank You.

Should Be More Famous

This is a really great movie. It's the story of William, who's a 15-year-old kid who wants to be a rock journalist. Thinking he's in his 30s, Rolling Stone Magazine sends him on a tour with the band Stillwater to do an article that could possibly make the cover. Along his trip that just keeps getting extended, William has some crazy encounters. He has to rescue a suicidal band member on Acid, he meets Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), whom he really grows to love, and almost gets killed in a plane. This movie is a great movie for all people who love rock and the 70s. It's also a good story about friendship, family, and relationships in general.

Moulin Rouge (Single Disc Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
I'll never leave a single thing out about this movie!

I was at first scared to approach this movie after seeing the previews on T.V, still one day I flipped through my channels and stopped at Moulin Rouge I stood there for about a minute thinking about the previews I saw and realized this could be awesome. Not thinking twice I quickly pressed select and saw the ending (Where Satine died, how sad). Then not long after that I knew the charatcers names, the storyline, and almost all the lyrics. The story begins like this: 1900 in the city of Paris we zoom over Paris to find the adult Christian curled up in a ball holding a bottle of wine in his hand, Christian decides to type his story about the woman he loved that was ...dead. Paris a year back Christian travled from London to go to Paris to seek his fortune as a English Writer, while pondering at his typewriter an uncouinscous Argetnina fell through his roof, he was shortly followed by Toulouse, a dwarf who was rehearsing a play with his friends. Next thing Christian knew he was standing ontop of a ladder standing in for still uncounicous Argentina. Everyone started arguing about what Toulouse would sing about, everyone started bickering and thinking hard all the sudden Christian started singing THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Everyone fell in love with Christian's wonderful voice and words he sang they decide that Audrey and Christian write Spectular, Spectular together still Audrey filled with rage and left the apartment. The four knew that Christian should write the show, Christian at the same time tried to escape the Bohmeins quickly stopped him and ask him if he believed Beauty,Freedom,Truth and Love? Christian said yes to all of them espicelly above them all love (Let's skip ahead to the good part). Christian soon falls in love with Satine still The Duke is head over heels as well, shortly after saying she will leave happily with Christian , Harold stops her and tells her straight out that she is dieing. Satine then knew she had to protect Christian in anyway possible even if she had to hurt him (emotionally. Satine dresss in her black dress and rushes over to Christian's apartment and tells him that she can't see him , because she wants to stay with The Duke. Christian becomes heart broken that following night while rain poured down Christian ran in front of the Moulin Rouge screaming his true love's name. The two guards punched Christian down and soon Christian passed out, luckily for him his good friends The Bohemeins took him under there wings espicelly Toulouse who stayed by Christian's bedside to see if he awoke from the fever. Christian felt like he had to shut out Toulouse for a while , and return to the Moulin Rouge (Even though ailing) one last time. At the end you know she dumps the duke, goes for Christain.. she dies ... The End. I know I skipped more than a few details I just like the good parts, (When they found him is my favortie part , don't know why). I love this movie, the music in the movie and every single scene is the best (Expect when Christian gets angry with Nini and Toulouse I hate those two scenes they make me cry, again I don't know why). See it, rent it , buy it for Easter. Happy Holidays and Good - Luck finding another copy of this film.

Elektra (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Elektra succeeds on all levels.

Elektra is a spinoff of Daredevil, in which she is resurrected from the dead and now lives as an assasin for hire. Within the first 10 minutes, we learn that she is a cold-blooded killer with no remorse and is in it for the money. But after her next mission goes awry when she becomes attached to her targets, Abby and her fathers, things get nasty as members of The Hand themselves go after them.

What really suprised me about Elektra that some superhero films lack is its emotional depth. Elektra not only faces a crisis of conscience, but we see her transformation from a killer to a warrior with a heart, which can be seen with her relationship with Abby. Also, the movie maintains a consistent dark tone throughout, and with it, creates feelings of suspense and intrigue. The action scenes are beautifully shot (the fight with Kirigi used no stunt doubles!), and the cinematography and special effects are definitely achievements worth mentioning in the comic book genre.

Jennifer Garner, however, reminds us why Elektra was made: because she's so darn good in the role. Her dedication to the role is non-stop, and I think she has done an amazing job. The rest of the cast fairs well, especially Kirsten Prout, who has a bright future ahead of her based on this performance.

Elektra is easy for me to recommend as it's the best movie of 2005 so far (with Sin City), and should not be missed for those looking for a worthy action thriller with a good mix of drama and suspense.

The Skulls (Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

Wow I can not say enough good things about this movie! Besides the killer plot, the preformances by Josh Jackson and Leslie Bibb were unbelievable! This movie really shows the power of human determination! Josh's character, against all odds manages to brave the evil forces of the temptation of power and money to do the right thing! This film manages to show the dark and powerful force that is secret societies! Before I saw this film I didnt know that secret societies existed, and now even still the idea frightens me! I think that the fictional documentation of the secret societies was thoroughly needed and very well depicted.

Why are there only 5 stars?!!!!

Chris Carter did a great job, yet again. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are two very talented actors. I thought Fight The Future was a great way of renewing X-Fans' interest in preparation for season 6. If anyone has not bought this movie, you should!!!!

Judy Garlands best

This movie is one of the vary best of this time period. A loving family with real problems for a change, and the music and voice of judy Garland make this movie sparkle. I always watch this movie when I'm sad, or just need a flashback to my childhood. I recomend this movie to everyone, weather your a fan of old movies or not. Even if you hate everything that Judy Garland did, you'll love this movie.

Ronin - movie DVD cover picture

This is a gritty, cold war drama without the cold war. The old pro at this sort of thing, John Frankenheimer, does it up right with this extremely well done film. This is the world of men with guns and cars, and Frankenheimer really excels at portraying this dangerous culture that exists right beneath the one you and I live in. The plot is perfect: There exists a case that everyone must have: the French, the Russians, and the IRA. The Irish put together a team of highly trained, out-of-work and somewhat tainted international professionals (thus the title of the film) to get it. Simple as that. Everyone chases the case, killing and double crossing all the way. This is a movie filled with men creeping in and out of shadows, walking like small swat teams through crowds of normal people, and coming together often in very realistic gun battles. In other words, just what the doctor ordered after your girlfriend sweet talks you into watching ?Titanic? or some Merchant Ivory snooze fest one more goddamn time.
The DVD insert explains how Frankenheimer went to great lengths to assure realism in this movie, and it shows. Everything is stark and nearly sepia colored, the streets of Paris (where the movie begins) resemble an open, dripping sewer. Also, the car chase scene is an actual tire-squealing, engine-overdriving, steel crunching car chase ? without digital help or ridiculous comic book stunts. Just high-performance cars tearing through the streets with muscular precision. This car chase will probably be remembered in the same class as the classic car romp in ?Bullett? (though I have to say, I still prefer Steve McQueen behind the wheel of that extremely buffed GT Mustang).
The tone is real, and the cast is well chosen: De Niro, of course, is always the seasoned pro, just like the character, Sam, he plays in the film. The scene where he calls out Spence (Sean Bean) is a whole lot of fun. Spence is a one of the professionals contracted for the job, and he and Sam don?t get along from the get-go. You see it coming from the beginning, and when it comes it doesn?t disappoint. Jonathan Pryce is a scary surprise as the nearly demented, lethal IRA rouge, Seamus; and Jean Reno (Vincent) is so completely word-weary and French, you sense that after he killed you he would feel very sad about it.
I?m not sure why, but this movie really improves with second or third viewings. Perhaps it is the statuesque, ice-melting presence of Katarina Witt, who has a small but important part in the film as a, well, statuesque, ice-melting Russian figure skater. Talk about perfect casting!
