left behind

Left Behind is a compelling drama based on the end of time as told in the bible. It gives us a glimpse of what it will be like when the Lord returns to earth and takes his children home and what the remaining people will endure.

Finally! This show was surprisingly witty and clever for its time. At a time where Star Trek the Next Generation was king, this show presented a much darker vision of scifi.

Great suspense and action

Both my wife and I were in suspense throughout the film. At the end my wife even cried. We had just bought a DVD player and picked this as our first movie. Unfortunatly, We did not check its rating. Too late we found that there was heavy use of four-letter words like f-ing, and GD. That did away any desire to see it again. I cannot recommend it because of its excessive use of profanity.

Studio Ghibli has done it again people...created a wonderfully animated film that has a story line that is full of well thaught out charicters. The badguys are good guys and the goodguys are bad guys. If this was a Disney film the badguys would be badguys and only that and the goodguys would be the greatest heros alive. But not in the case of Mononoke Hime. The characters are realistic and so is the blood. Do not be decieved by this movie becasue it is a cartoon. It is relativley violent and what a small child would consider scary. The only problem with this movie is that not enough people have seen it. They think it will be like a Disney movie, wich it isn't. It is the best movie i have seen in a long time, including live-action ones. This is a must have for any novice anime fan, a collector and even the peopel who have never head of the genre Anime.

Life's Hard Lesson

Reading the other reviews here, I felt compelled to submit my own. Clockwatchers is one of my favorite movies of 1998, perfectly capturing the aimlessness and degradation of being a temporary worker. I can't figure out the current trend of completely inaccurate movie synopses on video boxes (Muriel's Wedding, another Toni Collette favorite, is definitely not the madcap adventure the box would have you believe)... True, there are some truly great comic elements here, but THIS MOVIE IS NOT A COMEDY. i guess some of the other people expected a laff riot--this is definitely not it. Toni Collete's understated performance as sweet-but-shy iris is perfect. Parker Posey is hilarious as usual, playing the bitchy temp veteran. This movie is subtle, complex, well-developed, there is tons of foreshadowing and symbolism, the muzak-y score is perfect... again, this is definitely not a comedy, but it is one of the best and most thoughtful movies I've seen in some time.

Beauty Is Skin Deep

After looking at the majority of the reviews on show, I began to feel that, as with most people reviewing films, they try to outhink, or catch out the directors with thought deeper than the Mariana Trench.
This is one of my favourite films, because of the impression that it left on me when I finished viewing it. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful, so on the surface this film leaves an indelible impression.
Another major plus of this film is the fact that it doesn't follow any Hollywood cliches in terms of character development. This is totally refreshing as the subjects are no longer predictably stalwart or weak. For example, Elias Koteas' character would normally be sabotaging his men's lives by following blatantly wrong orders or killing himself amidst a fanfare of hollywood glory.
Basically if you would like to watch a beautifully concieved film with an interesting plot and sublime performances from Nick Nolte and Sean Penn then see this film, because it really is a work of art.

A heartrending film--and the greatest robbery since Brinks!

"(That was) the greatest robbery since Brinks" said Groucho Marx upon Judy Garland's losing the Oscar for "A Star Is Born" to Grace Kelly. Politics always exists; and this time it exerted a cruel influence. Judy Garland deserved the Oscar for Best Actress in this film.

Of course, everyone pretty much knows the plot by now; either they've heard of it before they got to this web page or they read Amazon's comments about what Amazon calls this "essential video." Judy plays Esther Blodgett, a band singer whose career soars into superstardom when he meets and falls in love with Hollywood mogul Norman Maine, played brilliantly by James Mason. There are some ups and downs along the way, however. (In case you don't know the whole plot, I won't spoil it for you here!)

The film is primarily a vehicle to showcase Judy's talents. She doesn't fail to disappoint! My eyes were glued to her the entire time she was on screen; her acting, singing and dancing were beyond remarkable. She belts out classic Garland numbers such as "Swanee," "Born In A Trunk," and "The Man That Got Away." This last song is arguably one of the best Garland signature songs ever along with "Over The Rainbow" from a film a few of you may have heard of! GRIN

The love affair between Esther and Norman is well played out: indeed, the acting of all the performers is entirely convincing and made me wish for more high quality films to be put out today!

The plot bravely tackles the problems of the Hollywood life: careers going up and down, lives sometimes destroyed in the process. I agree with the reviewer that the "performance within a performance" is fascinating: we see Esther showcase and spoof the 1950s type musical in the scene where she shows Norman the "big" musical number ("Somewhere There's) A Someone At Last" at the studio.

The color and sound are quite good for the time. I agree with the reviewer who writes that 1950s color was not up to today's state of the art. Nevertheless, it is quite impressive. The sound was excellent; the quality of the sound in the restored scenes is usually rather good but not quite as good. The stills used in the restored scenes are not the best but they represent a terrific accomplishment. This movie never should have been cut just for the sake of the almighty dollar. No wonder Judy and director George Cukor were so infuriated they vowed never to watch the film again!

In addition, Garland fans one may note that Judy's real life personality is perhaps best described as a blend of Norman's addictive behavior and Esther's incredible talent and resiliency. I also agree with the reviewer who writes that the plot is based at least in part on the marriage of Frank Fay and Barbara Stanwyck. Good historical reference, sir!

The DVD comes with wonderful extras: an elaborate commercial for "A Star Is Born" with Warner himself as host; scenes from the supper party Warner gave after the movie premiere; Hollywood stars arriving for the premiere; and three different filmed versions of Judy singing "The Man That Got Away" are just some of them! The movie comes in widescreen which helps to replicate the exact experience the audience had the night of the film's premiere (shortly before it was cut by Warner's so movie theaters could show it one extra time per evening).

In short, if you love musicals, Judy Garland, James Mason, or just plain top notch quality film in general, you simply can't miss this movie on DVD! It is truly one of the greatest movies of the twentieth century starring one of the greatest entertainers America has ever been blessed enough to have: Judy Garland!

Intense! Thrilling! A must SEE!!!

Ashton Kutcher show a dramatic side in this thrilling movie. His father was institutionalizedwhen people thought he was insane, but whatever mental disorder he had he passed to his son.
As a kid, Ashton's character blacked out a lot and no one knew why. He then goes years without a single one, and everything comes back to him. Just by remembering a certain specific day in his past he can re live it, and change it. But with dire consequences every time.
I founf this movie riveting, brilliantly written and well acted-out. A different side to the 70's Show invalid!
