this movie is nonstop action.,a very 'stylish' film. Ann Prillaurd is a very talented actress. She added humor and alot of emotion to her character, showing ahe had alot of sensitivity regardless of her violent situation. The ending however 'sad' having to leave the man she loved in order to protect him was a good ending. A MUST SEE FILM!

A Film to Ponder, but Far from Ponderous

I can't fathom anyone watching this movie through without being deeply moved, at times disturbed, and shaken to some degree. It really does delve down into the dark night of the soul, like the cinematic equivalent of a Sylvia Plath poem. It's a film about loss. Innocence lost, the questionability of ideals and motives. The end of childhood. Yet Egoyan doesn't deliver a totally bleak jeremiad here, either. Human beings are flawed, but they also are capable of growth and wisdom, though both are hard earned.
As usual with Egoyan films, nature is at a distance and a remove from human beings and the turmoil brimming over inside them. The beautiful BC vistas are in contrast to the tragic event that occurs. It's a bit like the end of Moby Dick, when the Pequod is smashed and sinks, while the sun smiles down serenely on the calm sea. I think Egoyan's getting at the same thing Melville is, as well. It's an existentialist's way of looking at the universe. If we're looking for a higher power to bail us out, we're out of luck. Our other moral constructs are pretty shaky, as well. We tend to think a little better of ourselves than is often the case.
As is also usual, Egoyan assembles an excellent cast, that feed off of each other's honest performances. No wrong notes here. Cinematography also up to the usual high standard. My appreciation for Egoyan's work increases with each new film I see. Personal thanks to the reviewer who led me to the works of this auteur director, in the best sense of that term.

Surprisingly good!

When I heard xfiles was going to continue after Mulder left I didn't see the point. The whole reason for the xfiles was because of Mulder. I also heard that Scully wouldn't be taking the lead as much in season 9 - which had me feeling pretty miffed. So I took a different take on the xfiles - rather than seeing it as a show with all cool characters gone I saw it as the xfiles having already ended and seeing who would take over the investigations etc.
And I found this season to be pretty interesting. Maybe it's because I've always prefered the stand-alone episodes, rather than the conspiracy eps, but some of the single storylines marvelled in their originality. Three examples of this are Reyes (who's pretty damn cool in her own right) getting trapped in an alternate-reality dollhouse, an investigation of a boy who "sees/fears" monsters that appear to be killing those around him, and a man who turns his house into the brady bunch residence (with the power of his mind)! Pretty wacky storylines and just the ticket to enable a strong season of xfiles without Mulder.
By the end of the season fans are not left without a guest appearance by Mulder and revelations on whats to come for our fbi characters. While I found the final episode a little dissapointing the accuracy and frequency of the return of some old friends and foes keeps the final episode of the season on the edge of your seat!
Overall a surprisingly great season!

Saturday Night Live - Christmas - movie DVD cover picture

Since the beginning, Saturday Night Live has always given us brilliant holiday sketches. This collection combines the classic original cast, right up to recent casts of the late 90's.

The list of skits includes:

Candace Bergen interviewing Dan Ackroyd as ruthless toymaker Irving Mainway who sells toys like "Bag O' Glass" and Johnny Switchblade Punk action figure.

John Lovitz who has to fill-in for Santa Clause playing Hanukah Harry...

The Classic Alec Baldwin on NPR radio sketch discussing his Shweaty Balls with Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer...

Steve Martin doing his fireside.."My Wish for Christmas.." routine...

John Belushi as a drunken mall Santa...

The Lost Ending to "It's a Wonderful Life"

Gasteyer as a topless Martha Stewart...

Eddie Murphy doing a "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood" bit...

Adam Sandler doing his usual Hannukah song...

All good fun and most of it very good.

An Intimate and Magical Celebration

Over the years, I have purchased most of John Denver's LPs and then CDs, and also observed several of his performances on television. (Regrettably, I was never in the audience at one of his concerts.) Recently I saw the PBS program during which the program on this DVD was recorded over a two-day period. Denver has never sounded better nor seemed happier than he does during The WILDLife Concert, totally comfortable playing a rich and diverse selection of older and newer songs. How rare and commendable that he makes each of the 25 seem so fresh. He is joined by immensely talented associates, notably James Burton, Jim Horn, and Pete Huttinger. FYI, this DVD and its companion two-disc CD include the previously unreleased "For You" which is not available elsewhere. I lack the talent to express how much I admire and will miss this talented and good man.

New direction for Zhang Yimou

I have long been a fan of Chinese film director Zhang Yimou and "The Road Home" is very different from the older movies with Gong Li that he is typically known for, like Ju Dou and Raise the Red Lantern. This movie is very sweet and Zhang Ziyi, of course, is beautiful. It is a far cry from the themes of hopelessness, loss, and patriarchal society that dominates Zhang Yimou's earlier films. The images and colors in the film is fantastic and really adds spark to the simple love story it tells.
I first saw this movie on a VCD that my dad brought from a trip to China. He also brought two other recent Zhang Yimou films, "Not One Less" and "Happy Times," which I also strongly recommend. They are very different from "The Road Home" but equally enjoyable.

Classic Adventure Series

If you think about it, you could probably come up with many examples of classic comedies, classic dramas, classic cop shows, detective shows, etc. But you would be hard pressed to come up with numerous classic adventure programs. Jonny Quest is certainly one of the greatest adventure series that television ever produced. Along with the other great Hanna Barbera series like The Flintstones and The Jetsons, Jonny Quest was blessed with inspiration from the word go. Who can forget the classic Hoyt Curtain theme? Who can forget the great voice talent the show offered, even though Vic Perrin and Henry Corden worked WAY overtime to create a wonderful rogue's gallery of villains. But what really makes this show succeed is its storytelling. These are just good stories well told-and fans of the series have their favorites.
I am especially looking forward to this set to re-watch the all-time great episode The Curse of Anibus. As many know, this is the famous mummy episode. Has a mummy EVER been more scary, in real film or animation?? Perhaps the mummy in the Brendan Fraser film ranks about as high as this one, but what makes the spirit of Anibus especially creepy is that this mummy doesn't talk or make any sound at all. It just walks and follows. You've got to see this one. And full marks must go on how beuatiful and terrifying the mummy is drawn. Watch for the famous moment where the mummy is looking into Jonny's bedroom window. Wow, this is the stuff for nightmares!!
This is a marvelous series that is finally being released and it is worth watching again and again. May you all enjoy and re-enjoy this set as much as I plan on doing!

Underrarted Charming Gem

Skipped Parts, or Wonder of Sex its UK title, is an absolutely charming gem of a movie.I was completely engrossed by this coming of age story, that is very rewarding for the viewer, offering some good script, tight direction and wonderful acting. The unconventional relationship between a liberated mother and her teenage son on one hand and her occasional indian lover on the other, and the unconventional friendship between her son and his 'girlfriend', discovering sex together(which results in a pregnancy), this is all filmed with such care and seeming simplicity, yet without being judgemental. This is why it works so well. The acting is top class! Jennifer Jason Leigh proving yet again that not only she is one of the best actresses around today, but that she chooses her roles very well. Bug Hall and Mischa Barton (who again does a very good job in TV's Once and Again) are very promising talented actors. The teenagers attitude towards sex is charmingly naive and at times funny. When Barton's character is staying at sam's place after her pregnancy (since her father did not tolerate what happened), and he offers to sleep outside on the couch, she charmingly suggests to him ina straight faced manner..sleep on the floor in case I need you!.So Skipped Parts is a very rewarding and sadly underrated film, that well deserves to be in your collection.

A Powerful Performance

Throughout the movie I keep asking myself why didn't Newman win an academy award for this performance. This is by far one of the best courtroom dramas I have seen. The Verdict possess the very essence which allows a viewer to be one with the film. You understand the actors on a personnal level.
