k d defines versatility 'live' and has an affecting voice

k d 'sings all kinds' as Tony Bennett says of her . This DVD shows a singer who revels in live performance and knows how to connect with an audience . She makes you a part of the show and having seen her live with Tony back in 2003 I look forward to the next time .

k d lang sings rock/pop , country and jazzy numbers . Other songs I could only classify as being in 'her' style . She is obviously a sensual person and that could be part of the act , but I believe it is her enjoying being herself .

Her voice affects me like Aretha Franklin's and I believe that is the main reason to listen to any singer - to get that goosebump feeling on your skin .

Take a chance on this DVD and enjoy k d 's artistry .
k d lang is an artist - fully deserving of the description .

No! I Didn't Want To Like Bugs!

Both our 4 yr. old and 8 yr. old LOVED this series! We thought the bees were most interesting, but the ants and butterflies were good too. Magic School Bus did their usual fantastic job of infiltrating lots of info into 3 distict and fun story lines too. GREAT!!!

Ordinary People - movie DVD cover picture
Quiet but enduring classic... deserved its Oscars.

I remember being in a dormitory TV room when "Ordinary People" won the Oscar for Best Picture, and the guys screamed and hissed and booed and some stormed out.

And why? I knew immediately that it was because "Raging Bull" had lost.

I'm not deriding "Raging Bull" in any way-- it was a fine film, and the directing/acting was terrific... But I knew very well that depite "Bull"s admitted quality, this room of gorillas were furious and indignant not because they really appreciated the artistry of that film, but they wanted a macho film with lots of scenes of guys beating the hell out of each other to win... Some movie-goers would also vote for "Pulp Fiction" and even "Kill Bill" over, say, "Ordinary People" for Best Picture as the latter has no graphic violence.

It's that simple, and that silly.

The suggestion that this win was one of the greatest travesties in Acadamy award history is--- well, it's just a buncha raging bull.

"Bull" was good, but "Ordinary People"s haunting (there's that word again), finely textured, understated view of a disintegrating middle-class family after the death with which none of them can deal of the in-house golden-boy, is the more affecting film. Some may claim the movie is now "dated" in that so many pictures have followed focusing on or dissecting middle class suburban life, but I've generally found those to be either too 80's-style-self-conscious, and/or too smug, and just quirkily unconnected to reality (and please dont confuse "Terms of Endearment" nor "American Beauty" with "Ordinary People"!)

"People" succeeds through understatement and lack-of-pretense, and from the fact that it was filmed in a now-bygone era in which posturing and political correctness weren't required from the script or the participants.

The Academy got it right.

A Beautiful Mind

Russell Crowe, impressive muscle man in Gladiator, became the genius mathematician in this film. John Nash, the main character, entered in Princeton University. He always njoyed making new theories alone. One day, his genius was acknowledged, and he took part in solving a password in pentagon. From this time, he started suffering from an obsession, in which he was always being watched from Russian. He always had a virtual image every where. We can't know what real affairs were until the middle of this film. Finally, the genius mathematician recognized his mental disease. With his wife's self-sacrifice, he overcame the mental barrier occupied with a virtual image. In last, he said to the man who let him know that he won the Novel prize "I'm crazy". Then, many other scholars around him put their pen on the table in front of him, which was expression of admiration for the scholar of greater achievement. We will see the most impressive scene this moment from the genius looks like abnormal man. I would like to recommend this emotional film because of the concentration of his attention for mathematic is able to overcome his handicap.

AWESOME!

I remembered loving the series when it first aired in the '80's. If you're a lover of Mob movies, like me, you won't be disappointed! The series is based in 1963 Chicago, and the sets, costumes, etc... are excellent. Just seeing all those vintage cars is worth the price of the collection alone! Made in Serial format (each episode is a continuation of the previous), I was hooked again, and watched all 22 hours in 4 days. Can't wait for the 2nd season!

The best of Python

Oh, yes it is, the very finest thing they ever did. But you'd better come equipped with an understanding of the times and the place (and not just what you learned in Sunday School) or you'll miss half of the jokes. Elegant satirical commentary, witty, very well written, and funny funny FUNNY! I've seen it dozens of times and still find something new in it every time I watch it (like Holy Grail). Buy it, watch it over and over. If you love Python you'll love this....

A Mighty Wind - movie DVD cover picture
Like peeling an onion

What I mean is that the deeper you get, the riper it becomes. This film covers every level and taste of comedy imaginable from the junior high level of the former porn star-turned-folk singer "Mrs. Terry Bohner" to Levy's satiric portrayal of every artiste-based melancholia of "Mitch".
As another reviewer noted, the song are so realistic you swear you have heard them before on late-night infomercials of the Folk Years. But when you listen to some of the lyrics they become even more brilliantly hilarious.
Two of the saddest casualites of movies today are story and character development. In 99% of movies produced today, story and character development have been sacrificed for the ticket- selling CG special effects and hype (obviously there are a few exceptions). The few movies that attempt to have any character development borderline on being so sappy they could support the maple farmers of Vermont for the next decade. Wind's characters, although fictional, are so stinkin' subtle, hilarious and complex that the more you watch the movie, the more you get from the characters. The bottom line is the funnier, dysfunctional and historically accurate they get with each viewing.
Turn off all other distractions, pop up a bowl of Reddenbacher's and indulge in this-and other Christopher Guest-movie.

Shrek (Two-Disc Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
needlessly scatalogical but otherwise terrific

I have to admit I was hesitant to watch this with the kids, having read that some of the language and humor were inappropriate, and some of it does seem gratuitous and needlessly provocative; it would be a better film without. But it's so much fun, so energetic, and the computer generated animation looks so good, that I suppose it can be grudgingly forgiven a few excesses.
The filmmakers have taken William Steig's fairly minimal story and expanded it into a full blown fairy tale, complete with an evil lord, a dragon, and a plot borrowed from Beauty and the Beast. Then they've given the whole thing a post-Modern twist that Steig would surely approve of, with insider jabs at Disney, Princess Fiona reenacting slo-mo kung fu scenes from Cameron Diaz's Charlie's Angels role, and various other humorous touches that give an adult overlay to a film that kids enjoy at an entirely different level.
But for all the snarky humor, the Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy antics, and the impressive technology, the most delightful irony is that movie ends up working because of the way it taps into classic themes. Shrek, the ugly and much-feared ogre, goes and rescues the princess after Lord Farquaad promises to restore the misanthropic privacy of his swampy home. But over the course of their adventure the previously solitary ogre becomes friends with donkey and falls in love with Fiona. Together they learn timeless lessons about friendship, loyalty, love, and the true nature of beauty...I very much like the poetic justice of the filmmakers retreat. But, of course, I'm a bourgeois and believe in those homilies.
