its awesome

The film from which this DVD was made looks like a 17th generation 30 year old worn out bootleg exhibition print! The numerous emulsion scratches are extremely distracting; some are so deep they are through the emulsion, into the base stock and show up white! There are color shifts all through the film, sometimes even within a single scene. There are jarring print splices that are incompetently mis-registered! If you single step through you can actually see the cement bubbles!
Don't buy this version, don't rent this version, don't even watch this version. If you care anything about the art of cinema or the craft of film, this DVD will make you sick.

Craftful Cinematography....a fine work.

If you've gotten this far in the reviews, you'll notice that either people love this film or hate it. It's pretty much right down the middle, which in a way, is a reflection of American societal attitude towards it's own sexuality.
If your own sexual world isn't aware there's something other than the missionary position, chances are you'll see this as a vulgar, disgusting film. The world that John draws Elizabeth into is a very psychologically complicated and sophisticated one. If you can't identify with lifestyles like that, you can't understand how or why they exist.
Personally, I found this film a masterpiece, not so much from the story line, but the mechanics of it. The cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking. Subject matter debates aside, this is a beautifully photographed film. Camera angles, lens choices, it's obvious the director worked very closely with the cinematographer in capturing on film exactly the image he had in his head. I can't say enough about the beauty of this film.
I thought both of the principals turned in exceptional performances, even though I view Rourke as a below-average actor. This film is easily his best, which actually could be said of Basinger as well. The Casting Dept. did a good job on this one.
Bar none, Basinger's strip tease (done with very little nudity) goes on my "All-Time Best Scenes List". The music choice, Joe Cocker's "You Can Leave Your Hat On" was a stroke of genius!
Alas, years after it's debut it's the subject matter that is remembered, and I find it still holds up. I'd suggest this film highly. Careful though, you may get more than you bargain for if you make it a "first date" flick to watch!

Scary,and Very Creepy!!!

Hollywood remakes a movie that did NOT need to be remade. And, "best" of all, we get to see Paris Hilton on the big screen (like we're not saturated enough with this empty headed no talent on cable TV, regular TV, newspapers and magazines).

When will the torture end?

Wonder if there are any ORIGINAL scripts with interesting ideas that Hollywood can buy and make a movie of? (How about adapting books to the big screen?)

It speaks volumes when the only movies coming out nowadays are numerous sequels and remakes featuring nominally talented and overexposed Hollywood starlets.

Nah, I'll stick with Vincent Price's masterpiece.

Historically Accurate - NOT!, but who cares! It's FUN!!

I have a degree in history and a passion for mythology which immediately made me scream foul when I saw this movie. However, the truth is it is GOOD, FUN, and AMUSING for the whole family. Lets face facts, did we really want the true Hercules mythos and its twists being fed to toddlers and preschoolers who live in a freaky world already? NO, I don't think so. It would be complicated to have to explain to kids that Zeus and Hera are siblings and married, but also have kids with lovers. Hey the cool part of this flick is unlike all the other disney movie's Hercules actually has four parents - WOW!!! I mean imagine that a mother and a father - twice over - in a disney movie. I'm surprised it was released. The mutilation of mythology can be overlooked because it is a good movie, my almost three year old really enjoyed it and in the end that is all that matters.

The Transformers - The Movie - movie DVD cover picture

I first saw this movie in 1998 or 1999, when my friend, Matt, let me borrow his copy. It was of the standard American home video release. I'm stating right now that I don't own this DVD, so I can't comment on the extra features (such as the Vince DiCola interview and the storyboards, which I'm sure are nice), but I can tell you what's wrong with this DVD. First of all, the movie is in pan & scan. Sunbow has stated that they had located the widescreen print of the movie, so why they didn't release it is beyond me. Second, the movie trailer wasn't included. Third, Stan Bush's music video of "The Touch" wasn't included. Besides these problems, there are problems with the story itself. A lot of Transfans seem to love this movie, but I suspect that it's due to the better-than-TV animation, rather than the plot. There are large plotholes. We never learn what Autobots and Decepticons are. We are given only a very short narrative of the setting. Then we jump straight in, watching lots of battles. This would be confusing to anyone who hasn't seen the TV series. Old characters are killed off (some without even a word), and new characters are introduced in the first few minutes. Adding to all of this confusion, we are never told just who or what Unicron (the giant planet-eating threat) is, why he wants to eat everything in the universe, and why no one has ever heard of a menace that large before. A plot device called the Matrix of Leadership is introduced. It was never seen or mentioned in the TV series before the movie, and now it's suddenly extremely important and the one thing that can defeat Unicron. What is it? We don't know. Why is Unicron vulnerable to it? We don't know. Why is Hot Rod chosen as the new leader of the Autobots? That's right, we don't know. Are you beginning to sense a pattern here? A lot of things are just never explained. In fact, they had to write a five-part episode after the movie to tie up the loose ends. Furthermore, a lot of characters are introduced that just shouldn't have been: Quintessons, Junkions, Sharkticons, Wheelie. This characters should have been saved for the TV series. Instead, they just further confuse the audience. The Autobots wander aimlessly around space, crashing on different planets and recruiting some allies along the way. They are no more prepared to take on Unicron at the end of the movie than they were at the beginning. Yet, Unicron is destroyed, the Autobots (presumably) retake their home planet of Cybertron (without any explanation as to how), and all is well. As you can probably see by now, the movie is a convoluted mess. Yet, somehow, it's a fan favorite. It's also clearly a rip-off of Star Wars. Yes, the movie is uncensored. Spike's swear is intact. Personally, I'm going to hold off on buying this DVD and wait until after Rhino releases the Season 2, Part 2, boxed set. After that, they may release a remastered, widescreen version of the movie with (I hope) more bonus features. If they don't, then I'll get this DVD. My advice to all of you is to wait as well.

Great Family Movie!

I recently (9/03) bought the DVD released by Pacific Family Entertainment, and I feel I must warn buyers that the DVD I received is a very poor quality copy. The sound is plain awful, the picture is barely watchable. It's too bad, because the movie is very sweet. <sigh> If a better quality DVD is released, I would buy another copy. Though I have waited such a long time to see this movie released on DVD, I have to say I feel I wasted my money on a very inferior copy. What a disappointment.

Best Rock Opera ever

This is the best Rock Opera ever because it actually has a concept. There is a message inside this movie. It's such an easy concept to grasp. And a lot of people can relate to the feeling of being isolated. If you pay close attention, there are other hidden messages in the film. There are a lot of World War II metaphors, which is easy to see. This film is also good because it illustrates the difficulties and struggles of life from a rock star's point of view. The animation will truly blow your mind!

The True Summit of Pulp Fiction

This film's title says it all, and says it BEST -- this is the finest expression of the true definition of "pulp fiction" EVER presented, book or stage or film... this is the greatest. When a wild story seems to reach a climax then escalates, as happens repeatedly in this movie, you KNOW that you've found something special, something unmatched, in the realm of story-telling. Bring out the gimp, bring out the gimp!

My whole family loves Angelina

Four stories from the PBS television series. In each tale Angelina faces difficult challenges.
First Angelina get the lead in the new ballet but must overcome her fear of flying "on a single wire" if she is to keep the part.
Next Angelina must face the responsibilities of taking care of her younger cousin when they all go to the fair.
Then Angelina and Alice face disappointment when, despite all of their efforts, they are unable to get tickets to a great ballet (or do they?).
Finally Angelina faces guilt when troublesome Sammy is blamed for an accident of Angelina's.
We love the stories, the music and the voice characterizations. A fun video for young girls, and some boys, with lessons for everyone.
