Better than Schindler's List

If one movie had to be picked as best for describing the horror of the holocaust, this is it. Schindler's List was mainly from the perspective of Schindler and, by all means, it was a very good story too. However, "Life is Beautiful" is from the perspective of a Jewish man. A man who is portrayed to be ordinary in many respects and even a natural clown to some degree, but you eventually realize that this man is no 'clown' when it comes to what is most important to him. Benigni uses a device at the very end of the movie that leaves you with no doubt of what that is for him and should be for all of us; love. ...

Clever!

This is an excellent updated version of "The Little Shop Around The Corner" with anonymous penpals using email instead of the letters used in the original with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks,as always, make a great team.

Best Movie Ever!

Is this the best movie of all time? No---. Is it great entertainment? YES!! Even tho' the purists and anti-purists have quibbled over the degree of "faithfulness" to Tolkien's books, the film must be regarded as a work that stands on it's own merit. I believe I read the entire LOTR trilogy 7 times over a period of 30 years; I was never really able to visualise Gollum until now! What a magnificent combination of acting and special effects. The portrayal of a poor creature torn between an all-consuming desire for posession of the "precious" and his "master" , (Frodo Baggins) was terrific!
As I commented earlier, this is not the greatest movie of all time , but it certainly is probably the best FANTASY movie. Yes--the book was better--a consummate masterpiece within the genre; but who cares? 5 stars for acting; 5 stars for scenery ; 5 stars for special effects (especially the Ents!) ; 4 stars for the film version of the book. That makes it overall the only 5 star film I have ever rated.

THE MIGHTY MET PRODUCES A CLASSIC

What DVD were some of the amazon critics watching? I saw this production at the Met and have since watched it twice on DVD and find it to be a truly historic Metropolitan Opera experience. The entire cast gets into their rolls with a frenzy seldom seen on the opera stage. The Met production out does their massive sets for AIDA, which I've also seen on the Met stage. Levine has the orchestra eating out of his hand and the singers/chorus are with him every note of the way.
Without any hesitation or reservations buy this DVD and go off into opera heaven!

The movie will touch your heart

A very moving film, one can't but admire the skills of a very young Nancy Kwan in her role as Suzie Wong. She steals every scene she is in, with her only competition being Hong Kong itself - seen here as it once was and will never be again. Bill Holden is adequate for the part (and one must credit him for taking what must have been a rather daring role in 1960 for a Hollywood leading man), but he just doesn't seem to have the level of emotional believability that the story demands. Also, when he refers to himself in the film as "pushing 40" one almost has to laugh, because it seems obvious that 40 had been left behind long ago. For me, having lived in Asia myself for several years, this film brought back many almost forgotten emotions and calls to me to pitch the 9-5 world of work and do something more fulfilling (as Bill Holden did).

Wonderful

Punch Drunk Love is such a special, funny, gem of a movie. I wish everyone could see this film. It touched my heart and my funnybone. Paul Thomas Anderson, who brought us Magnolia, wrote, directed, and co-produced Punch Drunk Love. Punch Drunk Love is similar to Magnolia, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Anyone who enjoyed any one of those films should enjoy this one.

Adam Sandler plays Barry Eegan, a loner painfully isolated from society, who finds love in an odd way. Sandler turns in a fine performance as the mentally tortured man. Barry owns a business selling designer toilet plungers, so even though he owns a small business, he is still a misfit! Barry has SEVEN interfering and uncaring sisters. Seven is the magic number of many fairy tales, and Barry is sort of a Cinderella in this fairy tale. His sisters drive him over the edge into mental instability. Barry has one friend, Lance, played by Luis Guzman. Lance is his assistant at his business, managing a small crew that is always dropping crates off forklifts.

Enter Lena, played by Emily Watson. Emily likes Barry, and a magical transformation starts. One problem is that Barry gave his social security number to a phone sex line, and now they are trying to extort money from him. I love the characters in this movie. FOX's "24" fans will be happy to see "Chloe" as one of Barry's overpowering sisters, acting exactly like she did on 24. It is great!

I was cheering for Barry at the end of the film. Part of the film takes place in Hawaii. Those scenes are so relaxing, it will make you want to go there.

My Grandkids loved it!

This video is so pure and delighful... my six grandkids watched it 12 times this week-end and cried when they had to go home! My three 2 year old girls all wanted to put on their "ballerina dresses" and dance around the room with the Ruby Princess! It has everything, except violence. What a concept!

Eddie, Norby, and Veeko Should be Very Quiet Inmates

If I were in the shoes of the three thugs who kidnapped Baby Bink, I wouldn't want anyone to know how I was foiled by a nine-month-old, especially one who helped put me behind bars. This is a hilariously funny movie about a wealthy couple(Lara Flynn Boyle, Matthew Glave), whose precious baby is kidnapped all because Mrs. Cotwell wanted her son's photo in the newspapers. The thugs disguise themselves as photographers and trick her into leaving them alone with her son. But in the hilarity that follows, Baby Bink proves that he is not so helpless as he leads his captors on a wild goose chase around Chicago. The whole family can watch this movie together, with great scenes of Chicago, and a wonderfully acted morality tale showcased in one of the best ways possible.-- Through the eyes of a child.
