Scared the [life] out of me!

A truly good flick to come out in recent years, this sci-fi thriller with Steven Spielberg directing and Tom Cruise acting looks at the moral issue of crime prevention today. While other movies have gone through other routes, notably the beautiful "Training Day," this explores the possibility of predicting crime and stopping it before it starts. With stunning special effects, and an above average supporting cast, this movie remains strong in a world of down-right terrible flicks.

"The Desert Inn has Heart! The Desert Inn has Heart!"

One of the funniest movies for grown-ups EVER! Every confrontation scene in this movie (in his boss's office, in the casino manager's office, at the Hoover Dam, at the school crosswalk, at the unemployment office, etc.) is a comic gem! If you're reading this review, chances are you have already seen this movie. So what are you waiting for? Buy the DVD already! You need to keep this movie in your video library and make all your friends watch it. This movie has more memorable lines in it than The Godfather, Casablanca, and Caddyshack combined! Granted, not all of Brooks's films are stellar. Anyone see "The Scout"? Terrible! But "Lost In America" is on par with the excellent "Real Life" from a few years earlier. Watch that one and listen for his "airline VIP club/missing-the-point" rant. Not only is Albert Brooks (yes! his real name IS Albert Einstein!) a wonderfully talented writer and director, but he is a great actor, too. Remember, he got an Oscar nomination for "Broadcast News" in 1987.Why can't all comedies be as funny as "Lost In America'"? And tell Julie Hagerty to stay away from the Roulette wheel.

What a welcome break from Barney! My daughter and I have so much fun watching the video together and I, of course, have to do all the dances with her so it keeps me in shape as well! It's a great video to have fun with. However, I was looking for the Monkey Dance and didn't get it with this video. A list of songs would be helpful! This video is highly recommended!

better than 1998 godzilla movie

Being a long-time fan of the giant monster genre, I was caught by surprise by this one. It has all the hallmarks of a Toho studios Godzilla or Gamera flick (OK, except for the rubber suits and the fantastic miniature sets). It is no classic, but is passable in its own way. A great film for a Saturday afternoon. It seems to be part of a recent trend of giant monster films. I hope they continue making films of this type.

Star Trek - The Motion Picture (The Director's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
A movie that shoots for the stars----with success!

After a 10-year vacation (in human years at least), Kirk, who is now Admiral Kirk, goes onboard his old spaceship, the U.S.S. Enterprise once again. The Enterprise is now vastly updated with slicker looks and most of its crew members are relatively new; they never had to work under the eyes of Captain Kirk.
When a mysterious alien creature sets its sights on Earth, Captain Kirk, being the ruthless leader he is, just can't help but to take things in his own hands along with the help of some familiar faces (Spock, Bones, Uhura, etc.), and some new faces (Ilia, Decker, etc.). Will this be something such as a troublesome morphing creature, a device that swallows galaxies whole, or a simple Klingon invasion? Will it be a mission that just about anybody can solve or will it be so complicated that it requires things such as a Vulcan Mind Meld? There's only one way to find out!
"Star Trek - The Motion Picture" was made almost a year before I was born, so I never got the honor of seeing the original TV series or even this movie while they were showing for the first time. Nonetheless, I became addicted to watching Star Trek - The Original Series on the Sci-Fi channel, so I had to watch this movie.
I can imagine the thrills of the Star Trek fans that were watching this movie in the theatres. For the time (1979), "Star Trek - The Motion Picture" has some SPECTACULAR special effects! You'll see what I mean throughout the entire movie, especially in sequences such as what happens when the Enterprise goes into warp speed for the first time (in the movie). Just as impressive is the musical score and the sound effects. You'll hear an impressive echoing sound at times throughout the film and you'll also hear familiar pieces of music, along with some brand new ones. It's real easy to see why "Star Trek - The Motion Picture" was nominated for an award in both of those categories.
"Star Trek - The Motion Picture" is also done with style. Its plot is dynamic without being confusing or choppy, and the acting is also very well done. My only complaint with the movie's flow is that at times, certain scenes, such as when the Enterprise is on its path to V'Ger, seem to be pretty slow moving. In my opinion, these parts aren't boring; they give you more time to take in the dramatic visuals and for the suspense to take even more effect.
The makers and performers of "Star Trek - The Motion Picture" shot for the stars with all they had at the time, and I think they did a great job of making a classic film that will never be forgotten! While it might not be the VERY best movie in the galactic series, it was perfect for getting the series on its feet, or engines, and for showing the fans that the Enterprise and its crew had a great future ahead of them.
My eyes were glued to the screen the entire time that "Star Trek - The Motion Picture" was playing. There were times that my jaw dropped, even though the film is older than me. If you're a big fan of Star Trek - The Original Series, then don't take my word for it, purchase it for yourself and keep it dust-free in your collection! It's well worth it, to say the least.

This movie was the ultimate example of attitude and how it can make a profound difference in the way you view life. I am grateful to have chosen this movie as a rental without knowing anything of what I was about to experience. Thank you Nicolette for giving us Americans a true masterpiece. It has been a long time since I have seen a movie which validates the true importance of love. It really is the only thing that is important and it is the one thing that truly does unite us even when we are across the ocean!

The best of the "End Times" movies

While Left Behind is being shown, read, studied, explored, etc. etc., which is all and well and good because I myself agree with the doctrine and I am glad to see people being brought to Christ Jesus, this little film went more or less unnoticed, which is a shame. Out of all the end time films out there, this one is the best. It does not rely on spiffy special effects, nor is it bent on overly violent exploration as to what the Antichrist will do toward those being brought to Christ after the Rapture, it does however make you examine and make you see the follies of your life, of believing the world's system, and what happens if you miss out and continue to miss out on God's grace and holiness (note, the two, it isn't just about grace, it is also about God's holiness). The film begins with the end, that is, with the Rapture coming. Two FBI agents, think of the X-Files and you get the jist, begin investigating the vanishings. The main character is hit again and again with what it means to have had faith in God through Christ and what it means to think of yourself as a "good person" and not pay attention to what it means to be saved. The main character must face his own follies and his own pride and his own arrogance, he must face what it means to serve the world or to serve the Lord, when coming into contact with one of the 144,000 Messianic Jews who will come into full force after the Rapture and starting during the first half of the seven years of Tribulation as outlined in the book of Daniel and in the book of Revelation. I say to any and all who want a good decent Christian movie to buy this and to support this movie. It will teach you a lot without grinding you down with heavy theology, just enough to bring you to (after the end) go and get your Bible and really examine your life with the Lord.
