teaching tool

If your style is blues/swing/jazz with more than a touch of slide and alternate tuning, and you wish to move from intermediate to advanced playing, this will do the trick. But be under no illusions - to get the best out of these lessons, you have to practice. Mr Dowling is an experienced teacher as well as a great player. He makes no representations that there is an easy way to play this style of guitar. Whilst he walks you through the more difficult passages, he makes it clear that practice makes perfect. I venture to suggest that the companion book/cd is a must if you want to get the best out of these lessons. Also get Bottomlands and String Crazy and while you are at it, get a copy of Two of a Kind with Pat Donoghue. They are packed with great music, particularly Two of a Kind. This is not a Mike Dowling promo. It is just that if you are serious about extending you playing to emulate one of the finest players around, then the investment of less than $100 is small change. I am about half way through this, and already I notice it has taken my playing to a new level and to a greater understanding of this music. Unfortunately so many of the video lessons fall short. This delivers but it requires you do some work. Some of the playing takes some real effort - maybe it was me, but I needed some serious wood-shedding to get the 'In the Mood' roll under my fingers on Nitpickin', but was tickled pink when I did - in fact I used it with a bit of a twist when working through an impro of 'I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus' with a pleasing result. What I appreciated best about this is that Mike takes the time to get the techniques down. This gives a solid grounding, whilst remaining interesting and challenging. The concert footage and camera angles are great. I will do an update on this when I have worked through it. I reckon that will take most of the winter, maybe more. By then I should be getting near to ready for one of Mike's camps or Wind River lessons - I've got the fly rod packed! This is highly recommended if you are a serious player and want to do the work. Mind you it is pretty good to have a Mike Dowling concert on tap as well!

If you want a challenge

Honestly, I have to give her 4 1/2 stars for not smiling, but I am SO thankful for this level of challenge! If you want a challenge this is it. I'm a personal trainer and this is a favorite of my collection. Did I mention challenging? If you are interested in working your way up to this advanced level, here are my suggestions:
Yoga Plus (by denise Austin)EASY
Intermediate Pilates (by Gaiam)NOT TO HARD
On the Ball (Natural Journeys) FUN!
Pilate for Every Body (by Denise) more challengeing
Then, this DVD
Hope this helps!

great flick

This movie is a single guy's bible. If studied it will teach you certain laws of nature (re: interactions between the sexes) that have existed since the beginning of time. When practiced you will not get more women. More women will get you. Any man that has seen it will tell you the same thing. Hanging out with your boys every Friday and Saturday night talking trash about chicks and smoking weed is no way to live your young adult life. Go get this movie and become a doer rather than a talker. Might I also recommend a book called "The Modern Gentleman"?

Mulan is one of the top three Disney movies of all time.

Disney's Mulan is packed with wonderful animation, fun music, and alot of great humor. Beautiful, true-to-life animation enhances this ancient story set in midevil China. The characters bring the story to life. Mulan is a character that relates to audience members of any age and gender. Other characters in the movie provide a wonderful ensemble of friendship, as well as a suspenseful conflict between the Chinese Imperialistic Army and the Evil Huns. The score in this movie is very well written. The music puts us in the appropriate mood and creates a real sense of Chinese culture. The songs are also well written and well performed. They are so good in fact that I wish more would have been written and included in the movie. As far as humor is concerned, this movie has it. Eddie Murphy brings true animation to life in this movie; his vocal talents shine through. Other characters, including Ling and his comrades and Crickee, my personal favorite, add a touch of realism through humor. Mulan is wonderful on all levels, which makes it such an enjoyable film for the family to watch together.

Underappreciated by Many

This story is of family, hope, joy, sadness and all this girl has been through after being dropped off at a walmart by her boyfriend and left there. She then has her baby in the walmart and had lived there for 6 weeks before it came. I won't tell the whole story, but I strongly suggest you get it!

Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (2-Disc Collector's Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

I'll admit, I was very skeptical before I saw this movie. I'm usually into the lesser advertised films and avoid the huge blockbusters (aka indie kid)...ESPECIALLY pictures by Jerry Bruckheimer.
However, Johnny Depp was in Pirates so I decided to see it - but not expecting too much.
For what this movie is, it's a great movie. No, it's not some dramatic, sordid story about love and heartbreak. It's not an indie film that borders on being pretentious. This is just a really fun, witty and colorful movie. Johnny Depp plays the slightly snarky Jack Sparrow and does an amazing job. His performance is a bit over the top - but not so much so that it beecomes obnoxious.
I'm going tos ay it again: I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I was expecting some glossy hollywood fluff and I was genuinely entertained for the entire duration of the film. ALL the characters were developed nicely, the story was strong and the visuals were great.
Go see it!

One of the best SCI-FI ever

Definitely one of the best SCI-FI movie ever. Never have I seen a movie filled with such excitement and gore. A must see for fans of the computer game "Starcraft". But I'm a bit disappointed by how some people couldn't comprehend this movie as a comical satire of fascism (I thought this was a really smart concept). I feel bad for the director, who had every intention of making a sequel to this movie if it made a hit. Oh well...

Incredible, But Not For Everyone

This movie is indeed very good, almost as good as the stage version. The Who did a great job concocting this masterpiece, and even better, it was packed full of 70's icons. From Elton John to Tina Turner, this all star cast brings this movie to life and Roger Daltery plays a breath-taking Tommy. However, this is not for everyone. If you have to completely understand whats happening in a movie to enjoy it, this might not be for you, especially the Acid Queen scene where Tina Turner plays an awesome drug addict. Overall, a great movie from a great musical by a great band.
