Of all the spinoff TV incarnations of Star Trek, Deep Space Nine had the hardest job persuading an audience to watch. By all accounts, Gene Roddenberry had concerns about the idea before his death in 1991. It took two more years to develop, and when it finally aired in 1993 reasons for that concern were evident right away. The show was dark (literally), characters argued a lot, no one went anywhere, and the neighboring natives were hardly ever friendly. Yet for all that the show went against the grain of the Great Bird's original vision of the future, it undeniably caught the mood of the time, incorporating a complex political backdrop that mirrored our own.
In the casting, there was a clear intent to differentiate the show from its predecessors. Genre stalwarts Tony Todd and James Earl Jones were considered for Commander Sisko before Avery Brooks. The one letdown at the time was that Michelle Forbes did not carry Ensign Ro across from The Next Generation, but when the explosive Nana Visitor defiantly slapped her hand on a console in the pilot episode, viewers knew they were in for a different crew dynamic. In fact, the two-part pilot show ("The Emissary") is largely responsible for DS9's early success. Mysterious, spiritual, claustrophobic, funny, and feisty, it remains the most attention-grabbing series opener (apart from the original series') the franchise has had. The first year may have relied on a few too many familiar faces--like Picard, Q, and Lwaxana Troi--but these were more than outweighed by refreshingly detailed explorations of cultures old and new (Trill, Bajoran, Cardassian, Ferengi). As it turned out, Deep Space Nine was the boldest venture into Roddenberry's galaxy that had been (or ever would be) seen. --Paul Tonks
Set Contains:
The first season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine follows the same pattern as the Next Generation sets: four episodes per disc, very good Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 surround sound, English subtitles, and one disc of bonus features. Those features total about 75 minutes, including an 18-minute documentary "Deep Space Nine: A Bold Beginning," a profile of Kira Nerys, makeup and props spotlights, and other short segments, all incorporating a variety of cast and crew interviews from 1992 (the beginning of the series), 1999 (the end), and 2002. It's good stuff, but Star Trek television DVDs seem overdue for a commentary track on at least a few episodes.
The packaging is noticeably different. Instead of TNG's heavy cardboard box and foldout disc trays, DS9's trays are bound in a book format, which makes the discs much easier to get to; on the downside, the outer plastic sleeve seems more susceptible to wear and tear. Another benefit is that the set occupies almost 50% less shelf space than a season of TNG, meaning that from the Original Series to TNG to DS9, each series is getting more compact, which is a welcome development for Trekkers who had been considering renting a storage unit to house their collections. --David Horiuchi

Anyway, if you haven't watched this whole series then you owe it to yourself to do so. Because you might be like I used to be, and think you're a Star Trek fan when you're really not. Before I saw all of the Star Treks. Mainly, this one - Deep Space Nine, and the Original Series, The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise, I thought I was a pretty big Star Trek fan. I also thought they were just gallivanting throughout the universe in all of the shows, lol. When they've actually only explored a small amount of out own galaxy in all of the Star Treks! But now, since they are all available to stream, it's possible to watch them from beginning to end in a relatively short amount of time. Allowing for the whole story to be remembered and understood a lot more easily.
Well, when it comes to Deep Space Nine, or any of the other Star Trek shows. To say that any one of them is the best would really go against what Star Trek is all about. And so, I wouldn't say that Deep Space Nine is the best of all of the Star Trek shows. Besides, each of them really has their own special thing about them. In my opinion, The Next Generation has Lieutenant Commander Data who reminds us of what it is to be a human being. Then in Voyager, there's The Doctor, who is a hologram that's allowed to go beyond it's programming. And in Deep Space Nine here, there's Odo, the shape shifter. Oh, and in Enterprise, there's Captain Archer who, to me, is kind of like the Chuck Norris of starship captains, lol. I still haven't watched all of the original series though. Probably what I like most about all of the Star Trek shows though, is how they seem to give value to all life, and show how everyone's life is just as important as the next. Even if it's someone you don't necessarily like. In this here season of Deep Space Nine, episode 5, "Captive Pursuit," Commander Sisko even says, "I have no tolerance for the abuse of any life form." And yeah, I did mean to call him, "Commander Sisko." Believe it or not, he is not actually a Captain for this whole 1st season. Nor is he for the whole 2nd season or most of the 3rd season. It's not until episode 26 of the 3rd season (The Adversary) that he becomes, "Captain Sisko."
Anyhow, I would recommend that everyone watches all of the Star Treks that I've mentioned here, beginning to end. Especially if you're someone who has always felt like you don't know who you are as a person. Because I used to be like that. And now, most of the things that make me who I am as a person, I've picked up from these Star Trek shows.
The Star Trek franchise has been alive for over forty-five years and through all of the various incarnations: Star Trek (The Original Series), Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, as well as nine motion pictures, I have been an eager and loyal fan.
When "Star Trek Deep Space Nine (ST: DS9)" hit the airways in 1993 I was stationed with the U.S. Navy in Hawaii. I was able to see a few episodes, principally in the first season, but overall I missed most of the 7-season run of "ST: DS9." So when I found all seven seasons of the series on Amazon.com, I plotted a course and picked up "The Complete First Season."
The Story-Line
"ST: DS9 ~The Complete First Season" is entrenched in Gene Roddenberry's now multifaceted Star Trek universe. The series was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller and produced by Paramount Television the owners of the Star Trek franchise.
A spin-off of Star Trek: The Next Generation, "ST: DS9 ~The Complete First Season" opens as the Federation takes over the operations of the Cardassian space station Terok Nor in deep space. The station orbits the planet of Bajor. After the Bajoran people liberate themselves after a long brutal occupation by the Cardassians, the Provincial Government invites the United Federation of Planets in to command the station alongside Bajorans. The Federation renames the station Deep Space Nine.
The series stars Avery Brooks (Spenser For Hire, A Man Called Hawk, American History X) as Commander Benjamin Sisko, the franchise's first Black commanding officer. He is joined by the following series regulars:
o Security Officer Odo (Rene Auberjonois ~ Benson, The Pirates of Dark Water, The Patriot);
o First Officer Major Kira (Nana Visitor ~ Ryan's Hope, Dark Angel, Friday the 13th);
o Lt. Doctor Bashir (Alexander Siddig ~ Syriana, 24, The Last Legion),
o Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell ~ Paper Dolls, Deep Core, Becker);
o Quark (Armin Shimerman ~ Beauty and the Beast, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Boston Legal);
o Operations Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney ~ Last of the Mohicans, Star Trek The Next Generation, Clean Break), and;
o Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton) Commander Sisko's son.
Predictably there are also several recurring Cardassian characters in DS9, including the former head of the station Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo ~ Hill Street Blues, Star Trek: The Next Generation), the primary villain of the series. Gul Dukat is a complex Cardassian and he undergoes several transformations before ultimately becoming profoundly evil and by the show's conclusion, he has morphed into Sisko's archenemy.
Another equally complex character is Elim Garak (Andrew Robinson ~ Ryan's Hope) the only Cardassian to stay on the station after his fellows pull out. He is suspected of being an agent of the dreaded Obsidian Order, the Cardassian secret police however; he insists that he is but a humble tailor. Garak's wide-ranging skills and contacts within the Cardassian Empire prove invaluable in several episodes, and he becomes a crucial figure in the upcoming war with the Dominion in later seasons.
ST: DS9 ~The Complete First Season deals with the ramp up of the space station and the discovery of the artificial wormhole by Commander Sisko and Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax. The (stable) wormhole offers passage to the Gamma Quadrant a sector of the galaxy heretofore unexplored. As a result of the discovery DS9 is moved out of Bajor orbit and closer to the wormhole in order to stake a claim to it. The wormhole quickly becomes a center for exploration, interstellar trade, political maneuvering, between the Federation, the Cardassian Federation, and Bajor.
The Bajorans worship the highly evolved entities they call Prophets. That (religious) worship generates issues between the Federation and the Bajoran population. The complicate matters Sisko is named Emissary of the Prophets.
My Thoughts
"ST: DS9 ~The Complete First Season" is one of the best Star Trek spin-off's to date. Each episode is well written and this first season takes it time introducing us to the characters that in time will become one of the strongest in the Federation universe.
In the "ST: DS9" universe a large cross-section of alien creatures comes through the station, in fact every episode introduces us to a new race, most of which come through the wormhole.
Though there are light moments in "ST: DS9 ~The Complete First Season" most of the episode explore dark material that more than other Trek series explore contemporary issues in American society at the time, including the separation of Church and State, the role of religion in the classroom, genocide, racism, bigotry, and terrorism.
Well acted, "ST: DS9 ~The Complete First Season" is just the beginning of my journey into what might prove to be one of the darkest chapters in Federation history; the Borg are still a threat, and there is an uneasy peace between Cardassia and the Federation, and there is still a feeling of general unrest in the galaxy. There is little separation between Star Trek: The Next Generation and ST: DS9; both series take place during the same time period, only ST: DS9 had a bit more dark spice to offer up.
