Zoom plus KERPOW!

If you already like ELO, you'll LOVE this concert on a DVD.
If you don't even know who ELO are, this is a perfect introduction on a DVD.
Even in their heyday, there was no-one quite like ELO. Not that they were so much better than everyone else - but because, like Queen, for example, they had a style and a sound that really was innovative and all their own. An acquired taste, perhaps (certainly not for anyone who thinks that Rock and Roll should never feature a string section!), but a taste worth acquiring.
What is particularly notable about this performance is the relative faithfulness to the original recordings. Some groups seem to feel that is a betrayal of their artistic integrity to ever give a live performance that matches their recorded material. To my mind this is like the film company that buys up a bestselling novel and re-writes it to such an extent that only the names remain the same.
I'm not suggesting that pop music should never be innovative, but if things are going to change it should at least be for the better - which is all too often not the case. In the Zoom concert we get 23 numbers, of which 17 are old favourites, and six are from the Orchestra's new album. At first hearing the older tracks all sound pretty much as they did way back when, but listen a little more carefully and there are SUBTLE variations, especially from keyboardist Richard Tandy, that ensure that they have renewed vigour and Kerpow!
ELO were great then, they're great Now. So just buy it!

Engelbert Live where it all started for him - The BEST!

Now if you want Enge at his very very best, this is it. I watch this one over and over and over again, especially on DVD and stereo. He has the audience up and dancing and singing with him and still as handsome and the voice is at it's best yet at the age of 66. What talent, can't be matched anywhere. I am a fan since he started in 1967 so I would know if he has gotten better and beleive me he has. With songs like Quando and Strangers in the Night you want to get up and dance with him and the audience. This DVD is the One. Thanks Enge!HugsLucy

The Original Is Soooooo Different

I knew the American Showtime version of the British program and am an admitted addict. While it took me a bit to catch on to it (I was put off by the sex, which seemed sort of soft core porn initially) I am completely under it's spell. The Showtime version is on hiatus for the summer and I was feeling withdrawl symptoms and went mad and just ordered the original British series plus the movie (part 2). Did I like it? Well, yes. The first package (part one) is exactly the same story line as the American version. Same story but different attitude. It sees the story from a very different perspective. While I found this a trifle disconcerting at first, I at last settled into it and went with the flow. Of course this is a much shorter verson (6 hours) and so it cannot by it's nature be an ongoing story. Once I was reconciled to the differences, I loved it. The story, as I have said, is the same and we have the same characters......but they are different. Nathan (Justin in the Showtime program) loves Stuart but is not immobilized by it (he is also 15! Yikes). He is a force of nature and not the least bit as single minded about Stuart (Brian) as his American counterpart. Vince (Michael) is a bit more inept in all respects, but just as loveable and endearing. And Stuart is the most disappointing and also, somehow, the most refreshing change from the Showtime character. His motives are more obvious and his reactions more predictable. But eventually, I ended up loving Stuart. DVD 2 is a revelation. A complete departure from the American version, this wraps up the whole thing. There can really be no more QAF (this version), and you wouldn't want it after this finish, The conclusion was masterful. Concentrating on the love Stuart (Brian) and Vince (Michael) have for one another, it explores areas the Showtime series has pretty much abandoned. I LOVED IT. Bravo. Check it out. You will not be sorry.

Freaky... GOOD!

Wow! We loved this movie. This actually happened to us once, but that jolt thing worked so we didn't have to learn any life lessons from the ordeal. But seriously folks, this movie was absolutely one of our favorites. We laughted, we cried, life doesn't get much better than that! The soundtrack is also way cool.We also really like the Cheetah Girls and that soundtrack. I think we've seen it every time it's been on the Disney Channel. I hope we don't start watching Freaky Friday while the Cheetah Girls is on. Horror!

Apollo 13 Blastoff!

I have watched Apollo 13 in the movie theaters, on VHS and now on DVD DTS. The true story of the three astronauts and the heroic effort by NASA comes fully alive with the awesome sound and video of DTS DVD. This movie captures the real life drama of ordinary people put in extraordinary circumstances. Heros abound from all walks of life. It is truly NASA's finest hour! The acting is superb! The special effects absolutely real life, and the DTS sound pushes you back on your sofa as Apollo 13 lifts off!

DVD Easter Egg revealed!!![.]

Trainspotting is a film that remind me of the time when we were young, and not so green. Plaesure to watch and compare your life with what it could've looked like, if you made a step away from the path. It's not violent and agressive, it's just a piece of art that makes all us, British People be proud of. Knowing that the comparison is not quite acuarate, I'll say that it's like having Grease for the Americans. I definately advise everyone to see it, you'll just love (and not only because of the scene when Ewan McGregor dives into the toilet), but because of the scence that this film gives you: if you're older a scence of regret and nostalgia; and if you're young- it's just a must see movie, you'll find out why....

One fine show.

I could pontificate for hours over each episode here, this is classic stuff. The Tracy Ulman clips really put a smile on my face, as that was were I first fell in love with The Simpsons. If you are sitting on the fence as to if you should purchase this or not, DONT its awesome.

Hidden Gem

For anyone who enjoys a solid mystery with good, interesting characters, Backfire is the movie. Seemingly missed among mainstream movies, this one is a breath of fresh air when compared to the many lackluster, computerized movies Hollywood seems to produce today. Excellent movie with surprising ending.

The Great Escape - movie DVD cover picture
A truly fantastic adventure...

The Great Escape is one of those films in which many elements combine seamlessly to produce a very entertaining and thrilling experience. In addition to the fabulous all-star cast that includes Steve McQueen, the film features great cinematography, music, and a thrilling plot complete with interesting characters. To make a long story short this is one of the most enjoyable adventure films out there.
As one might guess from the title, The Great Escape is about a punch of POWs attempting to break out from the camp - a pretty common theme in war movies. Their attempt, however, is anything but commonplace. For in this case the Nazis have the brilliant idea of concentrating all the escape artists into one supposedly perfect camp (as the Commandant so eloquently puts it - "putting all the rotten eggs in one basket.") Naturally, this allows these brilliant men to quikcly form a tight organization to create a scheme to match the camp.
Giving away any more details about the plan would be taking a lot of the fun of out the movie, for part of its appeal lies in the way it demonstrates the enormous resourcefulness of the men. Besides that, though, many particular scenes, such as the motorcycle chase at the end or various pieces along the way, stand out. Anyhow, overall, The Great Escape is a very memorable film and deserves a viewing. Have fun!
