One of my top ten favorites

Hands down...the best movie of the year. It paints an accurate picture of the complexities of life. It has moments of pure triumph and glory...as well as moments of absolute sadness. This film was saturated with scenes that made the viewer sit back and reflect on the importance of integrity...how very fragile life really is...and how very passionate friendship can be. The most touching moment in the movie was when `Bertier's', (Ryan Hurst) the white co-captain, ex-girlfriend `Emma' (Kate Bosworth) goes to the sideline and introduces herself and shakes the hand of `Big Ju' (Wood Harris), the black co-captain.

Got the Life

The absolute simplicity of concept, economy of verbiage and humanity of the subjects makes You Bet Your Life a TV landmark. Simple, handsome, ugly, funny, wierd people all become fascinating. In the context of a current TV era that has only The Simpsons and Seinfeld to save us, this show puts the trash depicting vulgar, voyeuristic and mechanical people to shame. And yet, YBYL is not essentially different from that which bores me in TV today. Only with a once in a millenium host who circles around the subtleties of sex and voyeurism within strict limits, stages thier weaknesses then gently caresses them back to favour. Brilliant.

One of the very best

This movie showcases great acting, great writing, and a serious, yet entertaining theme. It grapples with serious issues of family, business, ethics, past mistakes, and painful memories in a truly engaging manner. Though it is deeply rooted in the post-WWII fifties, the ideas are timeless. It is at once realistic and redemptive. Watch it with someone you love-it will be a movie you'll both enjoy.

TALKING TO DEAD PEOPLE

THE SIGHT is a made for Fox TV movie directed by visionary director Paul W. S. Anderson, who directed Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil and Event Horizon. Although it might be tempting to compare this movie to THE SIXTH SENSE, they're really quite different.
Andrew McCarthy, one of the Brat Pack, stars as an architect who is summoned to London to restore an old historic hotel. While there, he accidentally runs over an elderly woman who has left her hospital and wanders the streets. This lady (played with fervent tongue in cheek by Honor Blackman - the original Emma Peel and Pussy Galore in Goldfinger---informs McCarthy he is to take over her role as the "advocate for the dead." He is gifted with "the sight" you see, so now he is to be the champion for several murdered children who want him to find the serial killer responsible.
McCarthy gets good support from Kevin Tighe, Alexander Armstrong, Amanda Redman, Jessica Oyelowo, and Maurice Roeves. Even though the plotting is at times ludicrous, Anderson weaves some spooky and atmospheric visuals, and the pace is brisk and involving. You'll find yourself enjoying it in spite of yourself.

You killed Miles and your going over for it.

My personal favorite of all of Bogies movies. Hard boiled detective Sam (Bogie) Spade unravels the mystery of the Maltese Falcon. Great cast includes, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet and the great supporting actor Elisha Cook Jr. The DVD plays clear and crisp.

Tonight, tonight, the world is full of light...

This was a great movie! Though some old musicals are just not for me, West Side Story hooked me from the very beginning. I loved the music, and the sight of "tough" gang members ballet dancing nearly did me in, it was so funny. And maybe it's just because I've read "Romeo and Juliet" one too many times, but I loved Tony and Maria's relationship. My favorite scene is their conversation in the wedding shop...so sweet! And last but not least, this movie really did have a message about different cultures and walks of life. This ranks right up there with "Fiddler on the Roof" for portraying social consciousness in the world. One of my favorite musicals of all time!

City of God - movie DVD cover picture
Tragic Brilliance But Far From Unique

What's most remarkable about this film is how dramatically similar the circumstances and conditions are to those that are present in Los Angeles, Guatemala City, New York, Port Au Prince, Chicago, Miami, Mexico City, San Pedro Sula, New Orleans, Baghdad, Palestine, Johannesburg, Bombay, etc. The tragic brilliance of this film is that it's not a unique or even original story at all.

City of God, the film, depicts the same hell that is described so vividly in the so-called "Gangsta Rap" from African American and Latin American youth and in it's peer art forms elsewhere around the world (e.g., Ragga/Dancehall). City of God, the housing project, is simply one in millions of similar housing "projects" (experiments) that create horrendous conditions that simultaneously stretch and degrade human imagination to degrees that result in a shocking devaluation of all life.

For some strange, sad reason, poor people of color suffer similar recurring tragedies and pathologies that are far more complex than the typical "they are animals, imprison them" socio-reduction of reactionaries and conservatives and aren't nearly as 'romantic' as some apologists and liberals might have us believe.

I watch films like City of God, Menace II Society, Pixote, Salaam Bombay, Carlito's Way etc. not just for entertainment, but in the hopes extracting gems from the storytelling and getting closer to understanding why some people make the choices they make, and in the hopes of discovering why it always seems to be the poor Black and Brown people who die in the streets.

Awesome Movie

What a movie! This has the be the best film of 2003. Forget about any new 2003 war movie. Forget about Mystique River (basically because Kevin Bacon is in that and I loathe him with a passion). This movie is one movie that make you call it an unforgettable film.
Johnny Depp is in the role of CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW. This role was made only for Johnny Depp. I always thought Johnny Depp was one of the best actors, but none of his previous roles compare to his role in this one. He was amazingly outstanding. Not to mention, hystorically funny. He was the whole film. If Johnny is nominated for an OSCAR for BEST ACTOR for this film, he better get it.
Orlando Bloom is in the role of WILLIAM "WILL" TURNER. I never heard of Orlando until this movie. I thought Orlando was amazing in this. He deserves the OSCAR for BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR.
Geoffry Rush is in the role of the EVIL CAPTAIN of THE BLACK PEARL. Although, he wasn't bad in this role, he still wasn't all that great. Other than this film, I practically hate this guy's guts.
I do not know who played the role of ELIZABETH, but this girl is drop dead gorgeous. She's the next Catherine Zeta-Jones. As far as her acting goes, she should be getting the OSCAR for BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS.
This is a film that EVERYONE SHOULD "NOT" MISS. I don't care about what other people say. This is the movie of 2003. That's not my opinion. That's a fact all the way.
