Zach Braff impresses with Garden State

As an admitted cynic when it comes to most movies, I just fell head-over-heels in love with "Garden State." It's very easy to empathize with the quirky characters, and see a little bit of yourself in each of them. It reminded me how beautiful imperfection is.

Simply Terrific

Descriptions cannot do this show justice because this show has an air of je ne s'ais qua about it, and that intangible something is the reason why it's so amazing. On paper this show sounds like something that's been done before. Even some of the funniest dialog and plot twists written down are only a small fraction of their worth when experienced with the facial expressions and elocution of the characters, the music, the sets and everything else that went into the production of these episodes. This show is different from most other well-loved shows because every aspect of the production shines as a bright light of skill and talent.

There are no weak links. There are aspects of the acting, plots and jokes that may not appeal to some tastes, but as I show this DVD to friends and family I find its appeal is about as close to universal as any one show can get. Having seen previews for this and read a synopsis or two I came away not remotely intrigued. What caught my attention was the passion and consistancy with which reviewers extolled their love for this show. After reading every review I could find from average viewers I made my purchase based on those reviews alone and I was not disappointed.

I cannot promise you that you will absolutely love this show. I can't even tell you "if you're a fan of X or Y then you'll probably love this show". What I can tell you is that if you're the kind of person who is not blatantly turned off by the premise then chances are good that you will love this show simply because so few who have seen it don't.

If you want to get a better handle on how good your chances of liking it really are then do what I did and read through as many reviews as you want until you're confident enough to decide for or against this DVD. I think you'll be astounded (as I was) at the sheer popularity this show has among those who are lucky enough to have seen it.

Slick, clever, sophisticated and complex. I loved it!.

This 2004 film isn't for everybody. It's slick and clever and requires full attention to appreciate. When I first started watching, I wasn't prepared for this and nearly turned it off because it was a little hard to follow.

All that changed however, and, by the time I had been watching for fifteen minutes, I was completely engrossed. I did a double take, sat back and relaxed and enjoyed the unfolding of this complicated story directed by Mike Nichols, based on a play by Patrick Marber. The acting was exceptional too. And even though the actors were easily recognizable film stars, they each portrayed their characters so well, that I soon only saw them as the people they were portraying.

The story is set in London, where, in an early scene Natalie Portman and Jude Law fall in love. She's a young American with dyed purple hair; he's a Brit who writes obituaries for a newspaper. Later, he writes a book and has his photo taken by Anna, a professional photographer, played by Julia Roberts. He's wildly attracted to her but she rejects him. He's angry and decides to play a practical joke. This involves the internet and a chatroom in which he writes explicit romantic notes to Clive Owens and pretends to be Anna. This causes Anna and Clive Owens to meet and they soon become lovers.

This just the beginning through, and the rest of the story plays out in increasingly complex and interesting ways. These four people deceive each other, lie, tell piercingly brutal truths and suffer complex emotional pain. There are constant surprises and turns and twists. Each character took turns at being the one I hated. And then things change and I was forced to re-think the scene I just saw as the film becomes faster paced as it moves along. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

I absolutely loved this film and give it one of my highest recommendations. However, it is only for those with a sophisticated appreciation of human complexity.

Great Video on one of the nation's most important leaders

This is a must see for any fans of American history or of the Founding Fathers. As usual, Ken Burns does an outstanding job with this documentary in the same fashion as many of his other classics like The Civil War. I highly recommend this to all!

The Best Sword and Sorcery Movie

This is the film that started it all; both for Schwarzenegger's film career and for all of the sword and sorcery movies that would try (most in vain) to imitate it. Before Beastmaster; before Ladyhawke; before Sword and Sorcerer; there came Conan.

The story is simple and draws the audience into a credible yet imagined past of warriors and sorcerers. James Earl Jone's performance as the evil cult leader/sorcerer Thulsa Doom was the anchor in what otherwise could have been a complete flop. Max Von Sydow's brief role also gave weight to the acting. This is a role Schwarzenegger was born to play without a doubt. Another element which brought the movie to an epic status was John Milius' decision to retain Basil Poledoris for the music; a brilliant composition that carried the theme of the story with elegance (Oliver Stone wanted to use disco music.) Sandahl Bergman is the least convincing actress who was completely miscast as Queen Valeria; appearing to be more interested in accentuating her out-of-place Bay Watch appearance than playing her actual role. Mako and Jerry Lopez also delivered good performances in this film.

As another review mentioned, the director's cut is a bad deal. The extra scenes were deleted for a reason and the bad thing is that you don't have an option to watch the original one. Stay with the original edition even if the sound and picture isn't as good.

The Best B-Movie of all time!

This is definitely a DVD movie worth owning if your a fan of B-Movies and Horror, the DVD is awesome with lots of good extras including some missing scenes from " The Toxic Avenger" including an Audio Commentary by it's creator Lloyd Kaufman and other goodies.
This is a classic 1986 Horror Comedy parody set in a Urban town near New York City called " Tromaville" ( the Toxic waste capital of the world), a local Janitor Nerd named " Melvin" is picked on constantly and then one day when a Prank backfires on him, he falls into a Barrell of Chemicals that turn him into a powerful Hulk-like Mutant with an instinct only to kill bad guys and be kind to innocient folks, but he becomes the first superhero from New Jersey and must stop the bad guys.
A very entertaining and excellent movie, yeh i know the acting can be laughable but this is a leave your brain at the door and have a good time kind of movie. But be warned, this is definitely a Superhero movie not for kids but for adults cause there are some nudity and graphic gore including the Scene where a Child gets his head crushed by a Car that is not for the faint of the Heart and is a true video nasty that would have been banned in some countries.

It has a great lesson. I rented this movie, but I think it's totally worth the money to buy the DVD. If you like thrillers, you can't miss "The Hitcher".
