'Devil with the Blue' does not get his Due!

Why in the heck was this not one of the five biggest hits of the decade? The old Film Noir detective style with the ever so poignant background narrative set in the Black Cultural mode of post war L.A. is just too much to be avoided by any avid film fan.
I like mostly all Denzel's films, but this one, to me, is easily the all-round best. His character development, along with the overall/sub plot themes make this movie an easy (as in Easy Rawlins!) movie to watch over and over.
What can I say about the rest of the cast, esp. Don Cheadle?Jenifer Beals gets knocked by a few reviewers, but I don't know why: she played the half-breed-trying-to-pass character with a bitter-sweet demeanor that lended credibility to the role. Tom Sizemore shows his finely tuned mettle here as well.
This is a must see, over and over. I would love to see more films made of this genre. The "baddest" so-called 'Black' film I have ever seen: Real Black people in a realistic societal setting. What a great vehicle for African-American filmakers!

Josh Harnett at his best!

I was pretty okay with Halloween H20 and Josh Harnett in that movie but THIS! This is just excellent! It has heaps more babes (ladies cos im a guy) and much more of a plot than Blade and all those other movies. After I rented this I wanted to watch it over and over again because the alien scenes are fascinating, the actors are all much better than other horror movies that sometimes poo you off. Is that enough reasons? SEE IT!

Are you crazy?

Anyone who thinks that the ...American version was better than the original needs to answer yes to my question. That piece of dung that Hollywood made is nothing compared to the original. Ringu will be my purchase on March 4th, Hollywood can keep their paltry remake. The original is creepier and the acting is even better. The major disappointment in that car wreck of a remake was that they showed her eyes, which ruined the overall creepiness. Avoid the remake at all costs and see the original. As is in most cases, the original is far superior. Also, people who know nothing of film, like the ones praising the remake over the original, should not be writing reviews and take some lessons in film by whatever means neccessary. Thank you.

Excellent parody

This movie is a special treat for mature war film buffs. It has great over-the-top acting with truely masterful comedic performances from a cast of veteran actors. Charlie Sheen has the ripped tough guy look downpat. The late Richard Crenna plays a perfect straight hard core military officer. Well paced, excellent production values, photography, sound effects, multiple layers of humor, with sight gags, and dialogue that uses many double meanings. LLoyd Bridges does a scene reminiscent of the famous early 1960's "Sea Hunt" series that is a side splitter. Tremendous political satire of Pres.Bush 41, and Saddam Hussein. The movie uses sexual situations and word play masterfully.( Ex. An Iraqi interrogator using Yiddish expressions) "Hot Shots! Part Duex" wickedly parodies the gun violence and martial arts in many action movies. If you have seen the TV series Sea Hunt, American Gladiators; the movies: Rambo, Navy Seals, Terminator II, KickBoxer, Apocalypse Now and know anything about the Iraq War.. you'll just fall out of your chair laughing. What "Blazing Saddles" did to the Western Genre and "Spaceballs" does to science fiction and "Shrek" did to animated films.. "Hot Shots! Part Duex" does to action war films.

Gets better the more you watch it

I was recommended this film by others. So going into the movie, I had very high expectations. The first time I viewed it, I was a bit disappointed. The movie is definitely disturbing. Different. So back then, I would have given only 3 stars. But after a couple months, I went back and viewed the movie again. I don't know why I didn't like it the first time around! I can't describe the movie in one word. It has dry humor, violence, bit of comic book element to it, but it also carries a deep philosophical weight to it that cannot be ignored. I absolutely love it now, and I will be viewing it many times over in the years to come.

One of the year's best films

Most of the time, movies suffer from poor thinking and bad plots. Seldom are the thoughts provoked by the movie equal to the special effects or the actors delivery. This movie is the opposite. It has an extraordinary story line but doesn't do the ideas presented justice as it develops.
The plot is about a psychopathic killer who listens to cell phone conversations looking for people in need of an opportunity for self-redemption....Something he kindly (*grin*) provides with the potential for a high velocity bullet to the victim's head, figuratively and literally. For what he does is to call the victim, in this case at a phone booth he was using to deceived his wife while trying to setup a liasion with a young tempting actress in-training.
With scenes through the targetting scope the plot thickens with a killing of a pimp with the ladies of the night screaming that our victim in the phone booth did it, while he hangs on the phone talking all the while with his potential murderer. The idea is that decisions we make, the people we hurt, need redeeming, need justification for their pain. The shooter offers redemption through choices: the pimp, the cop, the wife, the potential quickie. Choices the victim is offered, along with his own [demise] at the hands of the cops---[demise] by barrage of police bullets.
The movie suffers from potty mouth without reason or meaning, choices not explicit but left hanging (why didn't he [take out] the cop?), choice started and awkwardly dropped, (oughten one- wife or young girl have died?) But the threads are there, just dropped rather than explored, moving to something else rather than finishing what was started.
Looks like the authors ought to get an A and the director a C. but it is an exciting movie, worth the time to see and even more so to investigate the threads the authors would have finished if he was allowed to actually make the movie rather than just write the script.....
thanks for reading this. see you at the movies....richard williams
