ZORBA THE GREEK is a terrific adaptation of the novel

This terrific 1964 film has finally come out on DVD. It's been worth the wait. Lovingly produced, directed and adapted by Michael Cacoyannis (check out his 1999 film of The Cherry Orchard, with Charlotte Rampling and Alan Bates, to see how versatile this director really is), Zorba is a kind of Never on Sunday story about a free spirit (Anthony Quinn's Zorba) paired with an uptight Englishman (Alan Bates's Basil). They cross paths on Crete, and there the story unfolds. The stars of this film are many: the excellent adaptation by Cacoyannis; the hard-to-forget music by Mikis Theodorakis (available, thank goodness, on CD); Crete as backdrop to the story; the Academy Award-winning black and white cinematography, black and white art direction/set decoration; and, Quinn, Bates, Irene Papas and Lila Kedrova (Best Supporting Actress winner), all superb in their roles. At nearly two-and-a-half hours, the film holds your attention because of all the aforementioned ingredients. I had the pleasure of seeing Quinn and Kedrova on stage in the musical adaptation (Zorba) that toured for a while in the 80's, and while I enjoyed it a lot, I couldn't help but think of how musical the film was in all regards, and how the addition of Broadway-style tunes pulled focus from the simple power of the story, which was so effectively captured by Cacoyannis and his cast. If I had to run out of a burning building with only a small bagfull of films, Zorba the Greek would surely be one of them. It's unique and ultimately unforgettable.

Chocolat is Good for You:

My wife and I saw this film twice in Nashville, once in Montana, and once in Jackson MS. We have now purchased the DVD and watch it on our farm in North Mississippi. Once in a while a film comes along that moves one in a certain way, we love 'Chocolat'. The story is a bit 'Magical Realism' meets 'old fashioned' paced movies from the late 40's. It moves like a good novella, and the story is relevant. And, it is a good story. The characters are important, and no character is wasted, or 'filler'. The importance of the film from a social view is also important. Tolerance, Grace, and Mercy are words you don't usually leave a cinema thinking about. 'Chocolat' is good for you.

Robotech - Masters - Legacy Collection 5 - movie DVD cover picture
A misunderstood section of Robotech

Most reviewers will get tired of the plot of these episodes, understandibly. What they do not understand is that these episodes (the re-thought series forced to fit in the American Robotech storyline) are not at all about fighting an attacking enemy race, but instead seeing the folly of the military power, as the earth becomes the real antagonists and bullies, who attack an unknown enemy who have actually come to protect the human race from the massive imminent invasion of the Invid, who are in search of the flower of life. The Robotech Masters are a dying race, the last thing they want is to fight humans--but they need protoculture to survive, and the humans do everything possible to stop them.
The bittersweet ending of the series should have made people understand that this section is not about heroes and crusades for peace, it is about war for the sake of war and the evils of such warfare (the supreme commander is exemplary of this). At the end, it is clear that the foolish destruction of the Robotech Masters will lead to earth's invasion and decimation, enter the Invid.
The series features the deepest questions about us as humans in the Robotech series. It lacks the immaturity of the first series (Dana's immaturity is mocked and quickly confronted, as is Bobby's). Reviewers who have attacked the plot problems (like the returning ship from the REF forces) forget that it was not originally created as part of the Macross universe, and elements were conveniently adjusted to fit it in (such as constant references to Zentraedi of which there are none, only 15 years after the original series!!!). If such depth is not your style, wait until the Invid invasion series, which feature the most interesting battle scenes and mecha in Robotech, but perhaps the worst plot and characterization.
A fan of the Macross series will likely dislike Southern Cross, but a fan of the Robotech re-creation will admire the much more complex, deeper (and granted imperfect) plot. Great mecha animation coupled with stunning musical pieces makes this as well as the remainder of the Southern Cross series a must-have.

Easily the best of the series.

Ash is back in Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn for all you people new to the series there is no need to hesisitate in buying EVERY movie in the Evil Dead series. The whole series is great every one guarantees at least 1 laugh and yes, maybe even a scare. And if you've seen the first and heard the rumors this is NOT a remake of the original. Maybe people thought this because of the 10-20 minute recap of the series... Maybe they just didn't watch the movie. Anyway it's worth the 10 bucks so just click the little buy button already!

Great Movie...Wish I could see the longer version

Gods and Generals is an excellent movie. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit the current demographic of target moviegoers (teenagers), and convinced Ted Turner to basically forget ever releasing the third part of the trilogy (The Last Full Measure). Also too bad is the fact that the supposed six hour cut might never be released, as I suspect some criticisms of the movie may be answered by this version.
Contrary to many people's opinion, this movie is not Southern propoganda. No Dixie propaganda piece would have Chamberlain's discussion about the war with his brother in it. It is just telling the story from the point of view of southerners. As this movie is the story of Stonewall Jackson, the Last Full Measure would likely be the story of Ulysses S. Grant, and would amazingly seem too biased to the North.
Despite this, I could have used a little more mention of why northerners joined the war. Showing men from Illinois and Massachusetts as well as Virginia going off to war would have been a nice addition to the movie. I suspect the six hour version has more Chamberlain and Hancock, which is why this version must be released.
Please buy this movie, and buy it as a gift for someone else. Despite being almost four hours long, it is a very smooth flowing time. Hopefully, Shaara and Maxwell will convince Turner to move forward with "The Last Full Measure". Good sales returns on the DVD of "Gods and Generals" will definitely help.

The Damned - movie DVD cover picture
"The Damned"

Directed by Luchino Visconti in 1969 (during a period of exceptional fecundity of controversial and political films) this film stars Dirk Bogard, Ingrid Thulin and Helmut Berger. This trio has an extraordinary energy which allows for powerful and brilliant tableaus throughout the film. But also these actors become an ingenious study in themselves of the already corrupted middle and upper class German life; They are mere refuse from Germany's now dying Weimar Republic.

The story begins in the first year of Hitler's new Germany, and extends through mid 1934, peaking at Hitler's betrayal and massacre of his own idealistic and loyal SA troops headed by Ernst Rhome, a man he had loved.

The essential myopia and self-aggrandizing nature of these ruthless Nazi military capitalists (the trio and their cohorts), blends well with their all pervasive lack of genuine morality. This upper crust elite, abetted by the already effective propaganda machine used by the Nazi party, paints a vivid portrait of Germany's first year adjustment and committment to the fascist state.

Hauntingly revealing of the nature of creature human's ability to not know what s/he knows. Not unlike today and the average person's minimal grasp of just what the military industrial complex is doing within this Country as well as outside this Country.

Visconti's sets are often authentic structures or painstakingly exaggerated replications. To increase the drama and sheer size of these sets, some were built with walls slanting inward to agument their huge size. The costumes are detailed, elegant and elaborate enough to add to the already dramatic story and fanciful sets.

This film is worthwhile viewing if for no other reason than to see the young Helmut Berger in his debut as a character of extreme complexity, evil and deviousness. As a young Nazi, blond and beautiful, he easily reflects the new Germany he is supposed to represent. Visconti's "The Damned" is a film that is as contemporary with human lesson and meaning today as it would have been had it actually been made in Germany in 1933 and 1934.

Are you jonesing for quality tv writing??

Firefly is THE most underrated television series of all-time. During a time when reality TV is slowly but surely destroying the minds of America, along came a series that was intelligent yet entertaining at the same time. Have you ever thought television executives were just throwing darts against a wall choosing which television series to cancel and renew? Well, not far from the truth. Firefly being pulled from the airways by one of the networks was the single worst crime committed by Hollywood against the American public.
I wholeheartedly endorse purchasing this complete series and tuning in for yourself. It is one of the greatest television programs ever created. The writing is brilliant, and the acting of the series stars is top-notch. It is a fantastic example of seeing how an entire production crew (from the producer, director, actors, etc.) all LOVE and truly BELIEVE in what they are doing.
Buy it. Buy it today. Buy it for your friends, family, and neighbors. You will NOT be sorry you did.
