Brother Sun, Sister Moon - movie DVD cover picture

Franco Zeffirelli is responsible for 3 of the greatest films ever made: 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Jesus of Nazareth' and 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon'. This film displays Zeffirelli's genius at it's clearest and is a perfect amalgamation of his other two films, 'Romeo' and 'Jesus of Narareth'. Ennio Guarnieri's photography is amazing. Any single frame is this movie is a work of art that could be framed and hung up on a wall. Donovan's music is lovely even though he only wrote 3 of the songs. All but three of the songs, including 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' were composed by Italian composer Riz Ortolani.
It's a crime that this masterpiece hasn't been released on DVD yet. Paramount is releasing the film 'Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell' on DVD in 2003 even though it's ranking in the sales rank is in 13,163. While 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' is ranked 306 and there are no plans to release it in the near future. The Sixth Sense (Vista Series) - movie DVD cover picture

The Sixth Sense is one of the best movies ever! I absolutely loved it. Haley Joel Osment is perfect as Cole in this supernatural thriller. In it, Bruce Willis is a child psycologist who is attacked by one of his former patients. A year later, he takes the case of a young 8-year old named Cole who reveals only to him his secret. He can communicate with the dead. Some scenes gave me goosebumps and the ending absolutely shocked me! See this film, believe me you won't regret it.

A Great Film

The title character is stuck in a nightmare world where he has a boss from hell and a mother to make Christina Crawford look lucky compared to him. What message does the movie send as to his state in life? It must be that given a fate like his, you're jinxed no matter what. To accept his dead-end world with resignation would not be a desirable fate. But to fight his condition leads to equally unenviable results no matter what. He enlists the aid of rats living in his house, of all things. But even his relationship to his rat (friends?) becomes ambiguous at best. Looks like an animal-loving movie for a while, but the rats in the long run seem to function as symbols of chaos more than anything else. Don't expect any just or fair ending here. Don't expect any unambiguous and successful heores. The movie is caught in a no-man's land between sympathetic portrayal of the downtrodden on the one hand, and effective horror on the other hand. It doesn't much succeed with either, just as it doesn't succeed as a story about animals as either lovable or threatening.

Black Hawk Down - movie DVD cover picture
One of the best war movies

This movie ranks up there with Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and Saving Private Ryan as one of the best war depictions I have ever seen. This horrible true story tells the tale of a combined operation with Rangers and Delta Force that went wrong. Also shows how the UN can be very difficult to work with in a war situation. The acting in this movie is beyond excellent with a great cast. The music also adds to the drama with a combination of upbeat western movie music and arabic/muslim music to fit the mood of the area of Somalia. This is a must see for anyone and should be considered one of the greatest war movies of our time with Saving Private Ryan.

Total Leo

"Total Eclipse" resurrects the enfant terrible of 19th century Paris -- no not Leo, Arthur Rimbaud. Modern poetry owes much to the outrageous behavior of Rimbaud, and no one performs outrageous better than Di Caprio. A lush, romantic stroll through bars and country, the story of Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine showcase the glowing talent of David Thewlis, Romane Bohringer, and of course, Leonardo Di Caprio. Some might find love between two men off putting, but there is sufficient hetero love in this film to keep everyone happy, and perhaps, intrigue some to read the writing of both poets in the process. Not a film for kiddies, young teenies, or fundamentalist conservatives, "Total Eclipse" brings to the screen a glimpse of life among the literary set, AND the spectacle of Leo au naturale -- what an actor, thank you very much!

Melvin and Howard - movie DVD cover picture
A forgotten classic

It's too bad Paul Le Mat's career never really took off, as he played the common man, good or bad, as well as anybody. While he achieved immortality in the "American Grafitti" movies, and got the thankless role in "The Burning Bed", "Melvin and Howard" was his star vehicle.
The movie tells the story of the very real Melvin Dummar, who made a big splash over twenty years ago by having his name appear in one version of the will of Howard Hughes. To the unitiated, Howard Hughes was at one time the richest man in the world, and flat-out owned several Las Vegas casinos. Dummar claimed his only prior contact with Hughes was giving him a ride once late at night after the billionaire had crashed his motorcycle while riding in the desert.
The motorcycle riding would not have been out of character with Hughes at the time. However, nobody has ever been able to prove that this will was real. In fact, several investigations have leaned towards Dummar instigating a very clumsy fraud. But on the other hand, nobody has been able to say with 100% authority that the will was NOT real. The movie chooses to take this premise, to the gain of the American cinema.
So the story goes on the premise that Dummar was telling the truth. Hey, if they can make the fictional "Shakesphere in Love", using real characters, why not this story? The genius of the movie is that it portrays mostly Melvin, and mostly the parts of his life that have nothing to do with Howard Hughes. He is portrayed as a complete loser when it comes to finances, barely able to hold even menial jobs, and foolishly spending money he doesn't have. This kind of person would probably try a scheme like the Hughes will, but yet the character is likeable. We feel the pain of not being able to pay everyday bills, and really root for the guy. We don't know whether it's a true reflection of the man, but we like who we see on the screen.
I first saw this film when it came out, and I was living in Illinois. I never dreamed then that I'd someday be living in Las Vegas, where a lot of the story takes place, and next to Utah, where the rest does. While the movie doesn't dwell on the tourist part of Vegas, it does provide some interesting shots that show the incredible growth the Strip has experienced in the last twenty years. The entire location of the film is now my home turf.
This, and seeing that other participants in the film would have future successes (Demme, Mary Steenburgen, Dabney Coleman, Pamela Reed) baffles me why I only see four reviews of a movie this good, that's been around so long.
Find it and see it.

Lawrence of Arabia (Limited Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
David Lean's Masterpiece

David Lean, we all know him from"The Bridge on the River Kwai". But Lawrence of Arabia is his best movie. Lawrence played by Peter O'Toole is a British Officer who serves in Arabia. The Britsh are in war with the Turks. The Arbians are helping them, Lawrence gathers all the Arabian Tribes together to fight the Turks and he wants the independance of Arabia. What follows is a 4 hour during view on the life of this man. You shall lover the dessert and you will love the wonderful music of Maurice Jarr?. The movie has a stars-cast with Omar Sharif, Alec Guiness, Anthony Quinn. What's very strange on the movie is, that there are no women in speaking roles.
