You want to know about them?

Sam Neill plays John Trent,an insurance investigator looking for a real challenge, after being attacked by a madman with an axe John is assigned to find Sutter Cane, the world's most popular horror writer, whose fans are so faithful and obsessive they cause riots on the book stores that haven't received his new book,In the Mouth of Madness, neither have the publishers"What about Stephen King?""Forget about King,Cane outsells them all."Trent, with Cane's book covers, makes a map and pinpoints the location of Cane's fiction city,Hobb's End.Trent along with Cane's editor travel to Hobb's End,seeing some preety creepy stuff in the way. They finally arrive to the strange town, which becomes more bizarre as time passes. Most underrated film which thanks to those damn critics kept people away from the box office.Awesome movie, directing, performances, but a disappointing ending, what I mean, sit back and enjoy the ride.

The Talented Mr. Ripley - movie DVD cover picture
Incredible Movie!

This movie is an incredible movie that twists, turns, and shows the depths of a tortured soul. Matt Damon plays Tom Ripley, a man who is excellent at impersonating people. He is sent to Italy to persuade the son of a rich man; who owns a shipbuilding business; to come back to America. The plot quickly thickens as Ripley finds himself lusting after Dickie; the son who is played by Jude Law; and his lifestyle. After Ripley kills Dickie, Ripley ends up assuming Dickie's life. He is nearly caught several times, leading him to kill one of Dickie's friends and to run away with another man so they can live together.
Ripley's homosexuality is very strongly hinted at several times, but never stated as such. This suggestion is a constant source of underlying tension and does much to enhance the mood of the movie.
Damon excelllently portrays Ripley, making the character believable, and actually; in my mind; somewhat worthy of pity and understanding. The movie is somewhat amoral, with no clearcut evil characters. Each character is shown in all their flaws and virtues. Excellent viewing and well worth buying!

The Thin Red Line - DTS - movie DVD cover picture
A war film that is about more than just war.

When The Thin Red Line was released, most people were expecting another Saving Private Ryan. They wanted a film that compelled you through intense visual imagery and used that imagery to convey a sense of the horrors of war. However, The Thin Red Line, at its heart, does not attempt to tell the horrors of war that most people imagined. Rather, it gives a deep look into many of the important things in life through the medium of war. Love, and love lost. The futility of our wars. How fighting for the sake of fighting can destroy you and many other interesting insights appear throughout this film.
This is a war film that makes you think in order to understand it. The only other was films I can think of that make one think this much in order to fully comprehend the film and its meanings are The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now. Yet even these films were exclusively about the emotional impact that war has on its participants. The Thin Red Line gives you a much more broad based view of the effects of war and may very well be the finest war film ever made, if only it were truly about war.

Stand and Deliver - movie DVD cover picture

I had the opportunity to see Jamie Escalante, Marva Collins, and others in person in the Houston, Texas area. I viewed "Stand and Deliver" before I saw these Giants of Learning. Having seen both the real people and "Stand and Deliver" was a gift. The video was great, however, I would have to say that I am disappointed that the DVD is not dubbed in Spanish or subtitled in Spanish. Maybe it was not in the studios budget, however, if they had an oversight initially, they could make a strong comeback and come out with a multilingual (including spanish) subtitled and dubbed DVD version. Overall I liked this movie because it said that many challenges can be met and overcome with a change in attitude, togetherness, and effort. Being a trainer of people from various backgrounds, educational levels, and mindsets, I can relate to this movie in terms of Math, Technology, and Learning, in general.

This is great!!! It takes me back to when I first saw the show watching it on an OLD portable black and white T.V. And when I say old, I mean the entire unit was about the size of two toaster ovens, with a 5' screen! ;o) As I am a bit older now I find that the writting was terrible, the actors mediocre, and the plots and dialect a bit on the cheesy side. However the action was as I remember it... you sit through about 35-40 minutes of dullness to get to the last 5-10 minutes of a super helicopter blowing the heck out of anything in it's way! I can't wait for the next season to come out!

Lupin the 3rd - The Castle of Cagliostro - movie DVD cover picture
Lupin the 3rd movie is excellent

There is probably no anime character as revered or as celebrated as Lupin the 3rd (well maybe Captain Herlock). Lupin's adventures are truely some of the most entertaining in the entire medium. And The Castle of Cagliostro continues that tradition in spectacular fashion.

Directed by the legendary Hiyato Miyazaki who directed Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, The Castle of Cagliostro follows Lupin, Jigen, Fujiko, and Goemon to the European country side. There they find that the Duke of Cagliostro is about to wed a young lady, who has ties to Lupin's past.

This is, without a doubt, an absolute joy to watch. At a time when so many anime series are overly tedious, brooding and melodratic, it's refreshing to see a film that has a grand sense of adventure and being humours at the same time. Lupin the 3rd may be the world's greatest thief, but in this film he gets to play the hero. Which is a great change of pace for Lupin. One of the great things is that even if you're unfamiliar with Lupin the 3rd, you'll have no problem following this film. This is almost a "stand alone" movie.

The transfer is excellent. The color is very clean even for an older film. The original audio track is presented in 2 Channel Dolby stereo as is the English track. One of the things I couldn't get used to was that the English voice actors are different than that of the current voice talent on the Lupin the 3rd series currently airing on Adult Swim and released by Pioneer. But if you listen to the original Japanse dialog that's not a problem.

The DVD has a very good menu layout. There are animated scene selection menus, which I found very nice considering that most older DVD's don't feature them. One of the things is that the "Extras" are a little sparse. There's some background on Miyazaki, trailers and really that's about it.

This movie is wall to wall fun. With so much anime being so deadly serious, it's great to sit back and have a good laugh. If you like anime, or even just good films in general, then this is a can't miss for your library that director Steven Spielberg once called one of the greatest adventure movies of all time.
