You'll eat this whole set up in a day or two

Yes, future episodes shoot beyond the stratosphere in quality as characters are developed and the stories attain that "anything goes" weirdness, but don't let anyone tell you that these early episodes aren't a riot, either. Because they are. The stories and Jerry's stand-up are both hilarious, the DVD extras are lavish in their generosity, and the picture and sound are top-notch. It's a no-brainer. Get these.

Absolutely magnificent, without a doubt

I don't know what I can say about this movie. This is one of THE best movies I have ever seen. I would recommend this movie to anybody who is really into World War II, the Holocaust, and/or the actors that were in it, who did an outstanding and amazing job of portraying these real characters. I haven't seen that many World War II movies, except for Saving Private Ryan, which is another masterpiece from the awesome Steven Spielberg, but this movie is the type of movie that you will actually have an understanding of how much of an impact it is for the Jewish community and for the Jews that survived this horrible time in our past. I think this is the best movie that was done by Spielberg, and I would recommend it to anyone, expect for children.

Great Reworking of Rio Bravo!

Carpenter brings his love for Howard Hawks to the forefront here by basically re-making Rio Bravo in a contemporary urban setting. This movie is great and any fan of Carpenter's should check it out. Looks great on dvd and has one of his enjoyable commentaries. Very violent gang movie with Hawksian characters. This is a cult classic and it's easy to see why.

The Final Countdown (Widescreen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
A fun alternative history/time travel flick

After many years, "The Final Countdown" sees a deserved DVD release, and unexpectedly in a collector's edition with lots of extras.
TFC is a popcorn "what-if" fantasy in which the US aircraft carrier Nimitz travels back in time/space to the day before the Pearl Harbor attack. Once they realize where and when they are, the crew faces the philosophical decision of whether or not to interfere. It's a thought-provoking discussion, but this film doesn't tie itself up in ethical knots. All the better to enjoy the reasonably good special effects and military action. (There is a dogfight between and F-14 and a Japanese fighter that really doesn't qualify as a "fight").
Kirk Douglas is good as always - in fact, I can't immediately recall him in a later film. Martin Sheen is convincing as an civilian reporter on board, and James Farentino performs as the XO with a destiny. Katherine Ross...well, let's just say that Katherine Ross is in this film.
It's not Citizen Kane - there are more than its fair share of continuity errors, cliches, anachronisms, and leaps in logic. Perhaps the worst flaw is Soon-Tek Oh portraying yet another sinister psychotic Asian villain. (You would think that at least a Japanese actor would be cast as a Japanese pilot). But on balance there is nothing that can't be ignored if one is already sitting through a time travel flick.
Recommended.

X - The Man with the X-Ray Eyes - movie DVD cover picture
The curse of the man-god

Even when told by a colleague that his vision is excellent, Dr. Xavier is not entirely satisfied: he wants to see what no other man has seen before. To do so and close in on the gods, he has created a substance enabling nothing short of x-ray vision; he takes one drop of it in each eye, even though a monkey he tried it on just died. Taking more of the substance, he soon begins to challenge his colleagues's medical decisions, and is forced to flee after accidentally killing one of them. In the film's first half, Dr. Xavier goes from man to semi-god to exploited freak; eventually posing as Mantallo, he becomes a `healer' who can't even heal himself. In the second half, his substance abuse gets worse: while trying to find a reversal, he uses more of it to better his chances of getting the money he needs. His voyage of self-discovery ends when he reaches a point of no return and recognizes it. This multi-layered film is rooted in a genre of fiction that we could call `the curse of the (wo)man-god', and which goes all the way back to the Greek concept of `hubris'; in such works, a human unsuccessfully tries to transcend his/her own nature through his/her specialised branch of knowledge. The most interesting of these inevitably carry theological and philosophical implications, and `X' is no exception. The way the movie highlights the different stages of the character's downfall is especially effective: everything from the music, the shapes, the colors, and the editing to Milland's acting denotes this degenerative process.

Firefly - The Complete Series - movie DVD cover picture
Best DVD Set Of The Year!!!!!

I fell in love with Firefly from the very first scene when it was briefly on the air on Fox (idiots). Fox did every thing they possibly could to doom this show to failure. They refused to air a perfect pilot until several episodes later. Instead they made the creators write an episode (The Train Job) over a weekend to air first. The episode worked but there were too many people that were missing the necessary exposition that the pilot provided. Then they stuck it in a terrible timeslot. Congrats Fox you ruined the best original television series I have ever seen. Whether you are a fan of the brilliant Joss Whedon's other projects (the fantastic Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel) or not, I wager you will still love Firefly. The direction, writing, and performances from a brilliant ensemble cast are flawless. Joss Whedon is the only person I know of that can effectively entertain fans of drama, action, and comedy simultaneously in the same one hour episode. You will laugh out loud, shed tears, and be on the edge of your seat in any given episode of Firefly. The creators have put the episodes of Firefly back in the order they were meant to air. There are also three great episodes included that fox never aired. Anyone that watched the series when it aired will see what a mistake fox made in refusing to air the episodes the way that Joss and Tim intended. Many reviewers have suggested that Firefly The Movie is a done deal to come out in 2004. This is not true. It is possible, but by no means a certainty. The best thing people can do to help get the movie made or (like in the case of another brilliant but doomed fox series Family Guy) get the series back on tv is to buy this box set. You will not regret it. And be on the lookout for Tim Minear's new series (oh god it's on fox too, it will never make it) Wonderfalls.

Nathan Fillion

Excellent, moving motion picture with powerhouse performances

This film is hugely entertaining and,as stated above, very moving. These are the reasons I've seen this wonderful film twice. For those of you who aren't familiar with the plot,it concerns an orphan named Homer Wells (wonderfully portrayed by Tobey Maguire) who leaves his orphanage and goes into the real world. If you haven't seen this film yet,I would suggest you hurry and see it. You will not regret it.
