You know what's wrong with Charade? Nothing!

Charade is a wonderfully pleasant mystery/comedy/thriller from director Stanley Donen (Singin' In The Rain, Indiscreet) and writer Peter Stone. The all-star cast includes Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, James Coburn, Walter Matthau and George Kennedy. It was filmed on gorgeous locations in Paris and the French Alps. However, what really shines about Charade, in addition to the cast is the Peter Stone's script which manages to juggle a clever, twisty plot with delicious dialogue. The rapport between Grant and Hepburn carries the film and they are a believable, attractive couple despite their large age difference. Supporting players are wonderful, especially Walter Matthau as the CIA man who seems to be the only person that Hepburn can trust. The film manages to be light-hearted, yet suspenseful at the same time. It goes effortlessly back and forth between comedy and suspense, with the sort of flair that only Hitchcock had been able to pull off. With the great cast, wonderful dialogue, lots of surprises, and beautiful French locations, Charade is nothing less than a winner. This is a must see for anyone who enjoys mystery thrillers, or by anyone who's a fan of Hitchcock or Grant and/or Hepburn.

This is a great film. But I'm afraid to watch it again.

Some of the images in this movie are pretty disturbing, but not to the point of being overtly gross. I was caught off guard at the ending. I truly did not see that coming! I found the sound to be very "muddy"... many times I could not understand the dialog. Even after replaying some sections, I still could not figure out what they were saying.

They Truly Can't Take the Sky from Us...

I am - without a doubt - very picky about what I like and what I don't like. When I first saw a few episodes of Firefly on FOX during it's brief television run, I didn't like the show much at all. Toss it up to a dash of stupidity one my part and a large helping of it on the part of the FOX network. By not airing the pilot they threw the audience in head first without directions. Without that pilot, which was the key to all the marks on the map that was Firefly, no one had a clue what was going on. Only a few intelligent people who saw passed the confusion and to the heart of the show became fans. Somehow though, Firefly's become the new Star Trek - a little known cancelled show that grew (and is growing) into so much more through the support of it's fans post-cancellation. It was another fan who dared me to watch the pilot and see what I thought that got be to become a Firefly fan. Consider this your dare. Firefly is without a doubt a fantastic show, and soon to be feature film entitlted Serenity - the name of the ship, and the title of the un-aired pilot.
The DVD set is exceptional. I have DVD sets for a few TV shows and rarely do you get such excellent bonus features - even though those shows where multiple-seasons long and poor Firefly only got half a season. I guarentee you'll love Firefly.

The most truthful acting on the silver screen!

This is my favorite movie. Some how this movie makes me cry every single time I've watched it over the past 15 years. The characters are too believable and have wonderful chemistry. Wonderfully written, depicting real life, addressing real life issues. Just like life, there is comedy, seriousness, and sadness. If you want to see truth, this is a must see.

Rourke at his best.

So, I saw this damn good movie on a german filmfestival in oldenburg last year. We all know that Mickey is at his very lowest point of life, he uses drugs as most people uses water and bread every day. And in this movie he plays himself: A always drunken, always on the wrong side of the law acting policeman. So: Why did he become like this? The "hero" of this film killed Mickey's wife in a accidently act of self-defense. And as he leaves the prison to get a job and a normal life, Mickey interact these plans that clever to destroy our lovely and handsome hero. No happyend, and that's good.

Words cannot describe this movie

To call this movie a "masterpiece" is meaningless, even for a Miyazaki film, because of the ebbing significance of the word. This movie is partly like a dream and partly like a nightmare. At times it is pure, unfettered elation, like in the flying scene. It is beautiful, haunting, sensitive, poetic, entertaining, funny at all the appropriate times, and, above all, intelligent. It occupies a world that exists less in Japanese mythology and more in the universal child's mythology, and like "Pinocchio" it reveals a child's instinctive fears coming true.

These words can't entirely describe the movie, because it is not like any I have ever seen. All I can do is insist that you see this movie. It is the best movie by the greatest animator. I was recommended Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke," and, years after Disney's streak of really bad movies had turned me away from cartoons, I became a believer once more in animation's ability to transport me away from everything familiar.

This movie lacks much of the scope and pathos of "Princess Mononoke." While I think comparing the two movies is an apples/oranges case, I'll say that "Spirited Away" is more poignant, because it has a more personal approach. Chihiro stays the film's protagonist from beginning to end, and the other characters, epic and spectacular as some of them are, never distract us from the movie's focus. This allows us to have much more sympathy for Chihiro than characters in other children's movies, where we look AT them instead of through their point of view. That we care this much for the main character in a movie so full of other-worldly fantasy is a testament to the genius of Hayao Miyazaki.

I recommend this DVD for you no matter who you are. If you don't love it, you need to loosen your tie.
