You Scratch my Back I Will Scratch Your Back

John and Emma are back and are here to stay via DVD technology. Being on DVD, the aesthetics about the actual episodes are not in question here. More appropriately one may ask how they look. They look good, very good. If you relish a series like "The Avengers" or "Twilight Zone" you no doubt know about the content of what you are getting. You are more likely concerned about the quality of what you are getting. Like John might say to Emma, "You scratch my back I'll scratch your back."
Much better than the Sean Connery film by the way!
Thank Mother.

MAGIC!

Truly a bad movie, made all the more disappointing for the clunky, unimaginative way it tackles its subject: one of the most delightful and imaginative creations to come around in a long time. The sets uniformly resemble prebuilt facades at Disney World, and the pacing and direction are plodding and second-rate. Nowhere in this movie do you find yourself lifted out of your seat and truly engaged; one is always aware that they are watching the ponderous and effortful attempt to recreate the book. The movie has no magic of its own. One example is the wonderful secene from the book where the Sorting hat picks Harry for Gryffindor; in the book this scene is enthralling; in the movie, it has no zing. The spectacle of the hat with an animated mouth is silly, and actually detracts from the notion that the battered old hat has hidden, mystical powers which Harry can only sense (and who's voice he can only hear) when he slips it on and is plunged into the inner dark world of the Hat. (The hat in the book has no mouth.) There were a million different interesting and creative ways of depicting this scene cinematically and Mr. Columbus, the director, has exhibited the anti-genius to find one of the more drab approaches to it. (if only Terry Gilliam had been picked to direct the movie; he was in the running; but then the film might not yet be finished . . . .) The kids' acting is good, particularly those of the kids playing Ron and Hermione, although there are times when you're only too aware of the mimitations of the young cast. The adults are fine, with the best performances coming from Alan Rickman and Robbie Coltrane as Professor Snape and Hagrid, respectively, but they're not around enough.
My 7 year old son, who loved the books and claimed to LOVE the movie, was squiriming in his seat by the end of this overly-long movie; and now that we own it, he never watches it at all.
Read the book instead.

Directors cut here folks YIPEEEE

For those that do not know, this current release is a directors cut with almost 30 minutes of NEVER seen material, not in the US release or the European release. It has the Goldsmith score, and I will go out on a limb and say I am not a big fan of it. I think the TD score was much more haunting and gave us an atmosphere of mystery and darkness than JG's did but I'm not going to complain too loudly because we FINALLY get to see a much fuller version of the story than has ever been shown before!
For TD fans there is also the US relelase version in this set with a seperate music track of of TD's haunting and deliciously dark score!!!So buy it already!!!!

Subtle and Slow yet very Satisfying

A great movie with no computer gimmicks or muti-million dollar elusion. Just a good old down to earth type of movie that has a slow start and an abrupt ending but all for a good reason. After all it's not just another movie we're used to seeing. If you are looking for some sexaully, action packed oriented movie then you're knocking on the wrong door. This movie is an eye opener and will most likely make you cherish your life a little more, and look at it from a different angle. Sometimes we physically do things and tire out muscles we didn't even know we had. Well this movie will evoke feelings you've never felt. so if you're the macho type pass on this movie, and if you have patience then this movie is a viture.

A great mother-daughter movie!

I knew I would love this movie because I loved the book and love all of Amy Tan's writings. I didn't find it difficult to follow at all. I went with my mother and she really enjoyed it also...especially the tearful ending. The movie looked good, too. The costumes and settings were beautiful and even the actors were extraordinarily attractive...particularly Tamlyn Tomita. I remember her in The Karate Kid II.

Thinking person's animated adventure

"Incredibles" is Pixar's best to date. I'm a little biased because I screened the beta release at Pixar Studios before it hit the theaters.

This is not a "cute" treacly movie nor a rapid-fire souped up Alladin chase-3 laughs-a-second type film. It is really a grown-up movie with enough action to keep pre-adolescents interested, although pre-schoolers wil squirm at points.

Musch of the humor is grown up, and there are dark moments, especially in the middle third when Mr. Incredible is captured by his arch-nemises. Some of the superheros are shown meeting violent ends.

The plot line's premise is that superheros are driven underground by lawsuits by injured bystanders and would-be rescued people. So true. There are pauses in in the action for great dialogue, and some situations (the main superhero in hiding has to become an insurance claims adjuster, which I thought hilarious) will probably blow past kids under 10. The scene where Ms. Incredible has to juggle a nanny situation over a cell-phone while dealing with the baddies was inspired. The Incredible kids relate to each other in an authentic way.

Brad Bird's "E" character - a sort of miniaturized half-Asian/Capote/Garbo designer of superhero costumes - is worth the whole movie. As she explains to Ms. Incredible, her costume withstands explosions, "yet breathes like Egyptian cotton!"

The movie takes risks and succeeds. The animation is a mix of the detail we expect from Pixar blended with 40s/50s comic stylism. This is the best full-length animation outside of Japan or France.

KIRK VS. KHAN

When Executive Producer Harve Bennett was asked to helm this sequel to 'THE MOTION PICTURE' he NEVER heard of 'STAR TREK'. So he sat down one day, and viewed ALL 79 episodes of the original series. He then decided to base this film upon episode no. 27. Nicholas Meyer does a fine job directing this sequel [ 1st of 6], not only to the first movie, but to the above mentioned episode (SPACE SEED). Ricardo Montalban is ONCE AGAIN exciting in his role of 'KHAN NOONIAN SINHG'.

A Movie That Requires Some Patience

O.K. I've read the mixed reviews of this movie and have reached my own conclusion. This is the kind of movie that you need to be in a particular mood and mindset to watch. You will appreciate it a lot more if you find yourself in a relaxed, pensive, philosophical type of mood. The acting is top-notch, even Oscar worthy, but the story which is told in short segments like chapters is rather slow which may bore some viewers who are used to fast-paced action movies. I gave it 5 stars for the acting alone. Give it a try...you may like it.
