Wonderful Film - Be Careful Which DVD Edition You Get

*****5 stars for the film

Haunted by an incident that happened in the ring, American boxer Sean Thornton (John Wayne) returns to his Irish birthplace, seeking only his roots and a quiet, peaceful life.

He soon falls in love with the beautiful, tempestuous Mary Kate (Maureen O'Hara). She is equally taken with him, but won't marry without the consent of her stubborn, blustering brother, Will (Victor McLaglen), who disapproves the match.

With the help of a well-intentioned scheme arranged by their friends, Mary Kate gets her brother's permission and Sean and she wed. Relationships spoil soon after, however, when Will refuses to pay the rightful dowry. Sean doesn't care, but Mary Kate is outraged and wants Sean to have it out with Will.

Time and again Sean backs down - determined not to use his fists - his inner tension building the whole while. But eventually he will have to decide between losing his wife's love and respect and facing his greatest fear.

This was an important and personal project for John Ford (whose real name was Sean O'Feeney). That his heart and those of his cast members were in what they were doing shows through. The fact that much of the film was shot on location in Ireland (on location shoots were somewhat unusual at the time) also adds an authentic flavor.

Barry Fitzgerald was at his comedic best here, and Ward Bond's performance as a priest has several simply unforgettable moments.

The Quiet Man is a charming classic and among Ford's best (in fact, it won him an Oscar for Best Director). It's funny, romantic, and always entertaining. It also features an exuberant score (courtesy of Victor Young) and one of the longest and most memorable knock-down, drag-out fights ever committed to film.

Two different editions of this DVD have been released with almost
identical packaging. Be careful which one you buy! (I wish I'd known this).

"John Wayne Collection" edition (*1 star)

This is the one I bought (ISBN 0-7820-1057-1, ASIN: B00000I1KV). It has "John Wayne Collection" printed on a green band at the top. Its special features include "The Making of the Quiet Man" documentary & the theatrical trailer. DON'T BUY THIS VERSION, PLEASE. The sound is decent, but the picture is absolutely terrible: blurry and full of splotches, almost unwatchable.

"Collector's Edition"

Apparently, the sound and picture quality are okay on the "Collector's Edition" DVD (ASIN: B00006JMRD), whose special features include Commentary by Maureen O'Hara, the theatrical trailer, "The Joy of Ireland" documentary with Maureen O'Hara, "Remembering The Quiet Man" Montage, and "The Making of The Quiet Man."

Masamune Shirow's Manga Masterpiece Comes To Anime

Amazing! Gripping! Thought-provoking! Staggering! Awe-inspiring! Far ahead of his time, Masamune Shirow wrote the manga that is brought to life in this anime. It raises some serious moral questions about what it means to be human, what is real and what is not. With a plot so detailed it could make your head spin, Ghost In The Shell is a must-have for the serious anime collector. Many have drawn parallels between Ghost In The Shell and The Matrix. Having seen them both, that conclusion is justifiable. Mere words do not do justice to what is arguably the best anime in the past two decades. Go get Ghost In The Shell and find out what you've been missing.

Daughter loved the puppets

My daughter loved Baby Dolittle Neighborhood Animals and World Animals from the time she was 14 months to about 22 months. She loved the puppets and the real life pictures really held her attention. Learned a lot about animals and these videos really helped her to recognize a lot of different animals.
She didn't seem as interested in this video as much as the Baby Bach and Baby Mozart videos before 14 months. She would get bored with the real life video parts until she was a little older. But as she got closer to 1 and 1/2 she started to lose interest in the Baby Bach and Baby Mozart videos and started to like the Baby Dolittle ones the most.

Big surprise

Watched in awe for the entire 89min of the movie. Some of the best acting i've ever seen. You have to listen to the music during the end credits "sunscreen remix" they fit together perfectly and somewhat summarizes what happened and the conclusions you may need to draw and maybe, just maybe what YOU should do differently with life.

A Totally Funny Hit!

This movie is probably one of the funniest movies of all time! It is great for kids and adults and people that don't like Sci-Fi! It is about the stars of an old TV show named "Galaxy Quest" and they are taken to a ship that is modeled exactly after the one they had in the show. My favorite character is Guy, everything that comes out of his mouth makes me crack up laughing! Buy or rent this movie, I'm sure you'll love it!

Aging Millionairess & Chauffeur Form Lasting Friendship

Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy (in Oscar Winning performance) invoke grace and dignity in this sensitive treatment of race relations and old age. Freeman stars as a gentle, wise black chauffeur in the service of a spunky Jewish widow, played by Tandy. As the years pass, their relationship evolves into a remarkable friendship despite their different backgrounds.
The film is skillfully adapted from the award-winning play, unfolding against the backdrop of civil rights changes in the South. Somewhat simplistic to be considered a strong statement about race relations, the Best Picture/Best Screenpaly Oscar Winner makes a heartwarming effort to give witness to dignified aging.
Freeman was never better, and the chemistry between the two leads is simply beautiful to watch. This is a strong 5-star cinema experience!*****
