Geobreeders Breakthrough - movie DVD cover picture
Yeahyeahyeahyeahyeah!

This is definitely one of the best action animes I've ever seen. Best described as a combination of a late '70s action show and the Ghostbusters, Geobreeders revolves around the almost all female crew of Kagura Total Security, a for-hire company that hunts down and captures the dangerous phantom cats (living computer programs that can assume the form of cats or humans and take control of any electronic system.) Geobreeders combines excellent action, animation, and dialogue to make a film that is a definite cut above a generous percentage of current titles. The animation has unusually good flow and is relatively free of the sometimes irritating stop-start qualities found in a lot of anime. In particular the level of detail in the vehicle and gun designs is astonishing, I haven't seen anything this good since Gunsmith Cats (another highly reccomended OVA). The dialogue is crisp and manages to maintain a fairly regular rhythm while the translation does an amicable job of avoiding the usual questionable phrases and pauses. There's some nudity and mild cursing, but almost zero blood and no actual sex, parental discretion might not hurt. I reccomend this to anyone who wondered what would happen if Charlie's Angels and the A-Team interbred.

Most addictive anime

God, how I love this show. I started watching it during the summer and now I'm real sad that I'm probably not going to be able to see it anymore because of school. The cases are really complex. I am a little confused though, because cartoon network appears to be dubbing more episodes and they are playing reruns, but the case closed website says that new episodes are airing on cartoon network for the past couple of nights. Hmmm. Oh well. One last thing, does anyone know which episodes are on this volume?

Long live Conan!

When it Was a Game 3 - movie DVD cover picture
Like a precious old family photo album

This series, done by HBO Sports, brings together color and b&w home movies of baseball games from different decades. This one focuses on the 1960's ,as turbulent a decade on the diamond as off. The quality of the picture is crisp adding to the inate pleasure of watching Mickey Mantle in old yankee Stadium, A young Willie mays dancing his magic in centerfield, Frank Howard in a Washington Senator uniform,Bob Gibson, The red sox of '67[curiosly Frank Robinson's better season in 1966 is ignored],the Miracle Mets of '69 all are covered. Harsher is the treatment of the change in the game itself,[the dependance on television reevnue, the altering of the game of the week],as america tilted definitively away from baseball and toward football.Still, the expierence of watching the heroes of youth play once more is pleasurable, and certainly, this succeeds. I do not know why baseball is so evocative with memories for so many, yet this series is proof of it. Very, Very well done.

Firefly was a great show...

There is not much more I can say about this show that hasn't already been said very eloquently by nearly 900 others, and you know if that many cared to comment there has to be at least a thousand times as many that feel the same way. I came to this show not as a Joss Whedon fan (have never watched either Buffy or Angel) but rather as one who will at least sample all genre offerings on the tube. I was sold on this show from the first episode, and watched all the others except one (darned VCR screwup) and was really upset to see it canceled.
I have been a fan of SF for nearly forty years, all the classic authors and all serious attempts to bring it to the screen, large and small. I don't expect anyone to take my word for it, but I know good SF when I read it or see it, and this is the real deal folks. Perhaps it sounds a bit cheesy on the surface, but give it a chance and you will discover fantastic character development enacted by a perfect cast, with stories that will resonate in your mind for days afterwards, and that compell you to watch them again and again. I preordered the set and got it just a couple of days after its release. Since then I have watched each episode at least twelve times and they still seem as fresh as ever.
I have no idea why there have been a few negative comments here about Firefly. There are many shows that I don't care for, but the last thing I would do is post a negative review of anything here. What you like is your business, and it is no concern of mine if you want to spend your money on something I wouldn't give a second glance to. It is also puzzling how anyone can not like this show, but then again that's what makes the world go round. If you still haven't seen Firefly, rent it if you can, borrow it from someone, but my bet is you will later end up back here to buy the set for yourself, and will become one of the growing number of fans that are waiting impatiently for the Big Damn Movie, "Serenity."
Joss, keep Serenity flying and I'll keep watching!

The Life and Death of the Road Warriors - movie DVD cover picture
5 WORDS: TAG TEAM OF THE CENTURY.

THE ROAD WARRIORS DID IT ALL AND THEY ARE TAG TEAM WRESTLING PERSONIFIED. HAVING SAID THAT, LET ME ALSO SAY IT WAS DISGRACEFUL THE WAY THEY WERE TREATED IN THE WWE/F...WHATEVER. HAVING HAWK ACT LIKE A STAGGERING DRUNK IN FRONT OF THE WORLD WAS A TASTELESS WAY FOR VINCE TO TREAT THEM. I KNOW HAWK HAD PROBLEMS BUT THAT WAS UNCALLED FOR. IF VINCE WANTED TO DO THAT TO A TAG TEAM, DO IT TO ONE THAT DOESN'T MATTER, LIKE THE DUDLEYS. THIS DVD DOES INCLUDE SOME GREAT MATCHES AND SOME GREAT INSIGHT INTO THE TEAM BY ANIMAL. ALTHOUGH IT DOES SHOW VINCE TRYING TO RUIN THEM BY HAVING HAWK AIR HIS PERSONAL PROBLEMS IN THE RING, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO ANY FAN WHO REMEMBERS THE GLORY DAYS OF BLACK SABBATHS "IRON MAN" CRANKING UP AND THE WARRIORS SLIDING INTO THE RING AND TO QUOTE FREEBIRD MICHAEL "PS" HAYES "BEATING THE P_SS OUTTA YOU." LONG LIVE THE LEGACY OF THE ROAD WARRIORS. R.I.P. HAWK. THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT MATCHES, WE WON'T FORGET THEM OR YOU. "WHAT A RUSH!!!!"

Both of my sons loved the video and the book!!

My first son loved for us to read the book to him. Then when my second son was born I knew that I had to find the video. With our second child potty training has been very difficult. But thanks to this video, I think that it has calmed some fears and some discomforts that he had about using the potty. I highly recommend this to anyone with small children!!

Scratch - movie DVD cover picture
Not all-inlcusive, but extremely well made

The guy who gave three stars has some good points. He's quite justified in his three star review. However, the way I see it, this is one of a few films (battle sounds is the only one I can think of right off the bat) that really attempts to explore the art of scratching and deliver it to a wide audience.

It's true that many DJ's were left out of Scratch, but I think the overall goal was achieved. First of all, the film is extremely well made. It is artful, has an excellent soundtrack, has a good flow to it and has some excellent interviews. There were many DJ's that weren't included partially because it is a 92 minute film that can't possibly encompass all of the influential scratch DJ's.

I respect this film immensely due to the fact that it's really opening people's eyes to what the art of scratching is all about. I mean Eddie Def is right when he talks about Burger King DJ's etc. That image of DJing as the kind of position that's easily filled by any dumbass with turntables and the "Fresh" sample is ridiculous. I'll admit, this film introduced me to scratching. I've been scratching for two years now and it has become my obsession. I thank this film for introducing me to the artform. Of course I can't review this film from the point of view of a veteran scratch DJ, but I can review it as a scratch DJ.

If you want to learn more about scratching, or if you already scratch, then I highly suggest this film or Battle Sounds. If for no other reason, some of the interviews (especially some that were left out of the final cut) are worth buying this movie for.

Slam - movie DVD cover picture
Two Words: Sound Power

Slam is not a silent film. Slam does not come off quiet and demure, though it is not a grossly violent film, nor is it preachy. This film artfully reinstates the importance of sound power, the beauty of the poetic imagination, and even ties in a bit of old Egypt. Leaving the story line altogether, this movie's dialogue moved me like a modern day Shakespeare. Never before Saul Williams (save Shakespeare) had I viewed a world where words and a stage (or camera) were so intensely exhilarating, inspirational, and emotionally giving. Slam holds nothing back. This is NOT just a film about a prophet in the ghetto. This is not just a film about poets. This is not just a film, period. When the closing credits rolled, I could do nothing more than sit in silent awe, hand over heart, trying to collect and tame the mad mess of thoughts running amuck in my head space. I won't ruin the story line for those who have not seen this film, but I will say that it is without a doubt one of the most gripping films I have ever seen, not forgetting that I am a film nazi and only boost the absolute greats (Fellini, Bergman, Lee, Tarkovsky, Allen and Smith...to name a few). This is an ABSOLUTE must see for all types and ages! I promise you won't regret having ever seen it and guarantee that once you have, you will recommend it to your friends, co-workers, strangers in the market, and your old, un-cool parents. Seriously, see this film!
