Ladder 49 (Full Screen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Yeah, Baby, this film delivers!

Entertainment is what I want out of a film. This movie delivers that and a whole lot more. Ladder 49 brings a lot of energy and emotion to the screen. The sets are very realistic, the acting is extremely convincing, and the story is, in a sense, something for everyone (marriage, having children, choosing a career), in this well-written and fantastically produced movie. I have seen a few bad fires in my life, even doused a few...this movie is as realistic as it gets.

Joaquin Phoenix, playing rookie firefighter Jack Morrison, occasionally gives us that "frozen face - semi-stupid" look that Tobey Maguire has made a career of, but unlike Maguire, Phoenix is a very solid actor. After the first ten minutes Phoenix had me believing he was actually learning the ropes as a firefighter. He is extremely convincing in his role, as are the rest of the actors and actresses in this great movie.

Ladder 49 offers some great scenes, memorable dialogue, and a cast of great characters. The flashback scenes do not confuse the viewer. In fact, I enjoyed the flashback scenes and the way they were used to show us the life of Jack Morrison. By the end of the film, I found myself wishing to know even more about how this man lived his life.

I really can't say enough good things about this film. It has action, drama, suspense, and pulls just about every emotion out of the viewer. I highly recommend this film. I even consider it a must-see!

See ya next review.

The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit - movie DVD cover picture
Historically interesting and entertaining

This black-and-white documentary chronicling the Beatles' first US visit in 1964 is very interesting for the historical perspective it gives. Hate 'em or love 'em, there is no doubt the Beatles completely shook up the music world. Some of the crowd reactions are scary/funny with their frenzied screaming fanaticism.
Much of it is comprised of the Beatles in hotel rooms as they watch TV, smoke cigarettes incessantly, and chat among themselves, or going out and about town, or riding in trains. This is intercut with various DJ's discussing the upcoming Ed Sullivan show event, crowds and crowd comments, and the actual appearance of the Beatles on that show.
The sound and image of the straight documentary portion is pretty good. However, the appearance from the Washington Coliseum concert comes across very poorly, mostly due to the limitations of the original recording and skimpy stage equipment. At one point, when Ringo gets to sing "I Wanna Be Your Man", he is barely heard.
There is a 50-minute "making of" the 80-minute documentary, as well as a commentary by the film-makers, and a booklet with some quotes and photographs. If you like the early Beatles, this is the DVD for you.

Tales

Very interesting movie. Some scenes are a bit disgusting. Nevertheless the connection of the story line with the crucifixion of Jesu-Christ is quite interesting. And maybe not so crazy after all.A film worth seeing and thinking of. Not for children!

Monty Python's Graham Chapman - Looks Like A Brown Trouser Job - movie DVD cover picture
A Masterclass in Humour

Dr Graham Chapman, MD, delivers in these home movies a set of lectures and demonstrations on how to be funny. Take notes and pay very close attention, because he has it right at every turn. The Pythons were the right mix of personalities and comedic talents. The whole being greater and all that, but in point of fact, were it not for Chapman, it is hard to believe they would ever have coalesced. Inspite of leading the most lascivious of lifestyles, Graham was always the one playing the vicar, the Protestant, the general, Brian, the dowdy women. His window on the ordinary person embraced those characters with a sense of compassion as well as humour, and that's what made it possible for Cleese and Palin to be as off the wall, for Idle to nudge, wink and imply slyly, for Jones to be a perfect foil. It was Chapman, after all, who told Cleese to change his skit about an intransigent appliance salesman to a parrot shopkeeper, and the rest, as they say.... None of them could have pulled off either Arthur or Brian save Chapman. None of them but Chapman could have gotten away with pleading with the German security guards, when they were denied entry to Dachau concentration camp on a German TV project, to let them in because they were Jewish. He had some finger on the essentially dignity of his characters inspite of the prepsoterous silliness, and that touched his colleagues as well as his fans.
In this absolutely terrific and poorly shot film, Chapman holds forth on the college tour cicrcuit about all sorts of misadventures, most of which will thoroughly satisfy you with a great peel of laughter. Knowing how he died, you are aware of the tragic consequences of his carrying on, and perhaps he is as well. Like his skits, in the very peak of the hilarity, something fundamentally frail and human peeks through looking for approval. In the American theatre, I can think of only Red Skelton who could deliver that same sense of silliness and respect, all in an effort to bring you a smile. A brown trouser job? If so, crease mine twice....

A beautiful film...

Juliette Binoche plays the part of a woman faced with the awful tragedy of loosing both her husband and daughter in a violent car accident. She becomes self-destructive and tries to kill herself. When that fails, she is faced with the reality of having to live.
With the love of one man in her life, she still denies herself happiness for the moment. She seeks oblivion in music. The luminious blue nature of the scenes and way in which the movie was filmed make this very artistic.
A slow moving film that will make you feel tense. Yet it is hauntingly beautiful and filmed only the way a French film can be. I love the accents and am very attraced to French foreign films for that very reason.
I am not sure if Juliette Binoche looks like Julia Roberts or if Julia Roberts looks like Juliette Binoche. I like their acting almost equally well, yet Juliette Binoche captures your heart and comes across as a much deeper actor with so much more to give onscreen. Her character was not cheapened by circumstance and she seems to have an inner strength which does not let her give up on life.
Recommended for the patient and those who enjoy the artistic nature of French films.

Elmstreet rocks

20 years on and Elm street is still one of the best horrors around. I still remember leaving the cinema at 11pm in 1985, driving a block, then pulling over to check the shadows on the back seat. The acting holds up against any other horror, the script is tight and the tension palpable... it's even well lit (die: Friday the 13th, die!!! Sorry ;-) )Make place for this classic horror in your collection.

I Saw It A Few Times In The Theater Thats How Good It Is

Now people will say its all special effects nothing more. Those people don't what they're talking about. Watch the movie and you'll see that this is as equal to the other three. The story line in this is just as great as the other three but it might take a little time getting used to the characters. I recommend that you watch the original three then watch this one you'll get answers to questions you didn't know about, I guarentee it. If you haven't seen the other three you might not like this but i doubt that. This movie has it all action, adventure, comedy, romance and even some elemants of horror. If you don't think it does have horror try to think what it would be like if people who will soon become the empire invade your planet... it would be horrifying. Star Wars The Phantom Menace has what the Return of the Jedi had: a battle on the ground, a battle in space and a lightsaber battle. Now that lightsaber fight was beautifully planned out, if you didn't like that fight your crazy. Now go on and rent it, watch it again or buy it and you'll be pleased. May The Force Be With You!!

The Best

This is a great movie, it's a kind of true story. One of my mom's friends was in the origional All American Girls Baseball Leage and she was invited to do the baseball game at the hall of fame at the end of the movie. Her husband also was one of the team owners. This is a great movie. I love it. This movie is VERY well made movie. I absolutely love it.
