Beautiful Cinderella Remake!!!

This movie is absolutely charming and a definite must see. Drew Barrymore's portrayal of Danielle was simply magnificent. The music was a wonderful accompaniment for Ever After. While bringing you to tears, to making you laugh, it shows that you can indeed, live happily ever after.

HUMAN NATURE

To maintain interest for 112 minutes in a movie that has one set, you've got to have a good script, and JOHN MICHAEL HAYE's for this film is almost perfect.HITCHCOCK is clearly at his peak here, working with a crew that understands his vision. The casting is examplary in every aspect;GRACE KELLY shines with her feminine charm;THELMA RITTER was one of the best supporting actress of her time and JAMES STEWART was tailor made for his role.A suspense film like this was quite unusual in 1954.What makes HITCHCOCK such a great director is his attention for details:the ring in GRACE's hand near the end;the way that HITCHCOCK combines the appetites of sex prelude and murder without insisting too much but making his point. If you pay attention, this film actually has a lot to say about the human nature. You should watch this movie twice to fully appreciate it.Many youngsters, brainwashed by the thrillers of our time ,that manages a few killings every fifteen minutes will be bored by this film.It is in fact stylish and intelligently conceived. One of HITCHCOCK'S 10 best ever.

The Great Funeral of Communism

Very charming indeed.
It's about a cellist in his late forties when his country Czech was under the domination of the Russians. As the story unfolds, viewers are taken into some beautiful sceneries in the most beautiful city of the world plus Prague's counrtyside and some village life in Czech. The cellist used to be a member of the Czech Philharmonic but was ousted for political considerations. He played in the funerals and renewed tombstone engravings in the graveyard to survive. He was talked into a to bogus marriage to help repairing his mother's house and to get himself an old car. Unexpectedly he was landed with a 5 years old kid ( acted by one of the rarest young actors ever) who only spoke Russian and very little Czech whom he treated with much humanity. And like "The Unbearable Lightness of Being", the Communist Party suddenly fell apart...
The music, the vocal, the cello and the chamber music that formed the Requiem was just beautiful-- and it turned out to be the funeral of Communism.
Definitely a great Eastern European movie. Recommended.

Amazing and Inspiring

Rabbit-Proof Fence is a remarkable story of brutal racism and the courage of three children. Until as recently as 1970, Australia's harsh policy toward its aboriginal people allowed for the forcible capture of half-white children and their relocation in concentration-camp-like centers, for the purpose of training them to be domestic servants in white society. This film tells the true story of three such girls who escaped from the center in 1932, and walked 1500 miles back to their family. Their only marker, across the desolate desert and bush, was the world's longest fence, the "rabbit-proof fence," which eventually led them home.
This story of Australia's misguided attempt to help the aborigines "in spite of themselves" has an excellent script and direction. The children, all non-actors, are wonderfully convincing and sympathetic. Kenneth Branagh has a small role as the government official who tries to recapture the girls. He is a by-the-books, no-nonsense man who believes he is really helping the people whose lives he decimates. David Gulpilil plays the aboriginal tracker who relentlessly follows the girls, and his villainous character was truly frightening. The sweeping photography of the arid outback shows just how tremendous the girls' accomplishment was. Rabbit-Proof Fence is a very sad but important story and I heartily recommend it.

Allen's Best Film By Far

Actually, the majority of critics will have you believe that this is Allen's worst film by far (read Pauline Kael's review for a good laugh, as Allen gets her so worked up she even starts criticizing the title), but that's because he makes them look like half-wits throughout the entire movie. So what do you expect them to say? The editing is wonderful, as flashbacks and imaginary sequences merge together seamlessly, one of the best being the scene in the apartment with Rampling and Django Reinhardt's "I'll See You In My Dreams". With Reinhardt, Chick Webb, and Louis Armstrong, this film also has the best soundtrack of any of Allen's films, and it's a shame it's not available on disc because some of the songs are obscure and difficult to track down except on pricy imports. As always, the writing is superb and shows Allen at his most cynical and philosophical. Another big plus is the casting. With the exception of Tony Roberts and some usual minor characters, the cast is fresh and engrossing, especially Charlotte Rampling and the French actress whose name I can't recall. Comparisons with 8 1/2 are usually used, not as praise, but in order to paint the work as derivative. If anything, it's more like Preston Sturges' SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS. Hopefully this title will be letterboxed on DVD at some point, because some of Gordon Willis' shots are outstanding and poorly cropped on the VHS pan-and-scan version. But, considering its critical reception, don't hold your breath.

Elmer Gantry - movie DVD cover picture
"You're all sinners! You'll all burn in hell!"

"Elmer Gantry" is an amazing film that does not seem dated at all, having lost none of its bite or appeal with the passing of time. Taken from the classic Sinclair Lewis novel of the same name, director Richard Brooks garnered an Oscar for Best Screenplay for his adaptation, and Burt Lancaster won his sole Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Elmer Gantry. Gantry is an over-the-top opportunistic traveling salesman who teams up with evangelist Sister Sharon Falconer (Jean Simmons) to promote religion in 1920's America. Gantry turns out to be the perfect publicity compliment to Sister Sharon, who, unlike him, is a true believer. Where she is quiet and gentle with her manner of preaching, he is all fire and brimstone, literally throwing himself about the audience and inflaming them into repentance.

Burt Lancaster commands the screen: all flashing teeth, athletic energy, charisma, and wild hair, using his own physical prowess to great advantage. The angelic and lovely Jean Simmons, who had legions of adoring male fans when she was in her ethereal prime, portrays Sister Sharon (loosely based on a well-known real-life revivalist of the early 1920's, Aimee Semple McPherson, about whom I'd heard from my grandmother) in a manner reminiscent of her character in "Spartacus" - she was the perfect choice for this role, as was Lancaster for his.

Shirley Jones was awarded the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her lively portrayal of prostitute Lulu Bains, whose past history with Gantry comes back to haunt him, with some of the best lines in the film - gleefully laughing as she dances about a room full of her fellow prostitutes, she recounts that "He rammed the fear of God into me so fast I never heard my old man's footsteps!"

Watching Burt Lancaster in his prime use his athletic ability (he was a circus acrobat before he became an actor) and physical grace helps make his performance truly electrifying. And he also manages to believably evolve Elmer Gantry from loud-mouthed salesman to a sympathetic and honest human being over the course of the film.

The top-notch supporting cast includes Arthur Kennedy, Patti Page, Dean Jagger, and John McIntire.

Streep Deserved the Oscar

While it took me more than one viewing of this film to understand its focus, I believe that Streep's performance was far better than that of Kidman's who won, by a nose (pun intended)! Kidman's part seemed to consist of a lot of hard to understand mumbling.
