The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas - movie DVD cover picture

I'm a big fan of Flintstones vitamins and the animated series. So I was really disappointed with the previous Flintstones live action movie. The jokes fell flat and although the casting was great (John Goodman was born to play Fred and Halle Berre in that skimpy outfit, yaba-daba-doo!), it didn't feel right. I think they tried too hard to capture the magic of the original show. You can't catch lightning in a bottle.
The beauty of "Rock Vegas" is, they didn't even try! This movie has Stephen Baldwin in it. He's the Baldwin they call when the other Baldwins have all thumbed their noses at the script! Mark Addy? Wasn't he one of the extras in "A Knight's Tale" or something? Kristen Johnson (Wilma) has the most celebrity here but she's horrendously miscast! Wilma is supposed to be this petite thing. Johnson, all 6 feet of her, with those thunder thighs and that whiskey voice...! Watch out for an appearance by a washed up, wrinkled Joan Collins!
So this movie has "Straight To Video" written all over it.
But somehow, it works. Don't ask me how. Somehow this cast, and the plot, and the wonderful sight gags all come together and if you suspend your belief for a moment, you'd think you were still watching the cartoon.
So if you like the Flintstones, give this a shot. Or wait til it comes on cable. And if you haven't tried Flintstones vitamins, do so. They're great and if you eat enough of them rumor has it, your urine will turn purple and green.

uhf, a movie that should be in theatres again, now on dvd

Overshadowed by big budget flicks the summer this opened, otherwise it would be hailed as the true masterpiece that it is. Mr. Yankovic I salute you.
Only one question, why is there no twine ball in the movie?

Third Watch

I'm impatiently waiting for the entire run of "Third Watch" to be released on DVD -- especially now that the series is coming to an end! TW is truly one of the most exceptional TV shows I have ever watched. I've been with it from the first show, my dh has just "discovered" it last season. We're both really sad to see it go. Having it available on DVD would be fantastic.

All the President's Men - movie DVD cover picture

"All the President's Men", based on the book by Woodward and Bernstein, was impossible to resist for Redford. Nixon! Oh boy! Again, Hollywood passed up the Kennedy-stole-the-election story. What a shock! You have to hand it to these guys, though; they have talent. "President's" was masterful, thanks in large part to Goldman, who knew how to condense the story. Redford tried to play it close to the vest, and comes close to making it come off as straight and narrow. The actual truth portrayed betrays the lack of objectivity, however, at the Washington Post. Redford is Bob Woodward, a former Navy officer and a Republican. This is revealed to Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) who gives him a furtive look upon learning this shocking truth. Jason Robards is Ben Bradlee, the Post's editor. We all know the story: The DNC is broken into by Cubans with White House phone numbers in their address books, and in investigating the burglary Woodward and Bernstein suspect a larger plot, which they uncover through dogged journalism that cannot be denied. The two writers are shown to be complete heroes. Hal Halbrooke plays "Deep Throat", the White House insider who gives Woodward the leads he needs to keep investigating. To this day his identity is unknown, and it remains entirely plausible that he was invented out of whole cloth. The story is the story, and there is no room for liberal bias in that. To Redford's credit, he does not demonize the Republicans or sermonize. Implicit threat against the pair are made, but not expanded into anything. G. Gordon Liddy did volunteer to "off" Jack Anderson for revealing CIA assets in the U.S.S.R., but there is no evidence that Nixon's Republicans ever thought about blowing Woodward and Bernstein away. Domestic political murders, as best as I can tell, are the province of the Democrats. Even in Oliver Stone's "JFK", it is Lyndon Johnson who supposedly was in on the plan to kill the President. The bias in "All the President's Men" is subliminal, but leave it to yours truly to see it. First, there is the acronym CREEP, which stands for Committee to Re-elect the President. There have been numerous such committees over he years, and they always go by the acronym CRP. But Woodward and Bernstein turned it into CREEP. Gotcha. There is also a scene in which Bradlee, who in real life was a drinking buddy (and God knows what else) of Kennedy's, getting the news that the story is progressing and has real legs."You run that baby," he tells Woodward and Bernstein, then does little jig as he leaves the office. This is telling. Redford and director Alan Pakula allowed it, probably because it let them impart their own happiness over Nixon's downfall through the character. In another scene, Robards/Bradlee tells the reporters, "There's not much riding on this. Just the First Amendment and the Constitution of the United States."Now just hoooold on there, Ben. Was Watergate really about the Constitution? Was that august document threatened? This begs the question, Where was Bradlee and Post publisher Katherine Graham when the Constitution really was threatened by their pal JFK, who stole the 1960 election? Where were they when their pal Bobby Kennedy was wiretapping Martin Luther King? Democrat operatives had to break into homes, hotels and offices to wiretap Dr. King just as the Plumbers had to break into Dr. Fielding's office, and Larry O'Brien's. A free press is undoubtedly the cornerstone of Democracy, but it functions best when it is not populated by over-inflated egos who think they are the soul arbiter of freedom of expression.

Playmakers - The Complete Series - movie DVD cover picture
An Excellent Show for sports novices and sports junkies

I was not interested in watching this show at first, but after the first episode, I was a "playmakers" fiend. The show was right on target. It tackled modern day issues that not only affect athletes but also non-athletes. The show addressed drug-abuse, domestic violence, homosexuality, infidelity, health & fitness...all issues that affect everyday people. The main characters had their own private drama, but all of it was dealt with in the locker room, bar room, and on the football field. The team truly functioned as a team and offered support whenever possible (well, they didn't care much for the whole homosexualtiy issue). I was pissed when I heard that the NFL complained about the show, thus forcing ESPN to cancel the series....whiners and wimps!! It would be great if another channel, like HBO or Showtime would pick up the series; these channels are definitely not afraid to air/produce shows that touch on gritty, but real life topics.

Waterworld - movie DVD cover picture
Why do people hate this film?

I regard this movie as the ultimate escape. It's exotic, tropical and the 'seascapes' are simply stunning. I guess it's popular to hate Waterworld. But for what reason? Okay, so it never made as much money as Universal wanted, but it's all up there on the screen and it DID make a profit. It's not the flop everyone thinks it is.
I found Kevin Costner to be actually quite effective as the (fish) man with no name (they only refer to him as 'The Mariner' a couple of times) and Dennis Hopper is simply great as the bad guy, much better than he was in Speed.
The action is very exciting and tho it's far-fetched and ridiculous it never fails to entertain. Bizarrely enough, the best scenes of the film are the quieter scenes aboard the Catamaran. It's here that a certain mood takes effect and the entire pace changes. This is aided by James Newton Howard's breath-taking score. I'd seriously recommend hunting down the soundtrack CD to this one.
It's a shame the 3-hour cut is not available on DVD (explaining what became of Mount Everest) but this 135 minute version is all we have at the moment. Tho this particular DVD features an outrageous DTS 5.1 soundtrack in FULL BITRATE. The anamorphic 1.85:1 picture also looks superb.

Metal Has Returned

Anyone who says Lamb of God is overrated is a complete idiot. They are bringing back metal not destroying it like so many so called metal bands that whine in all of their songs and complain about how much life sucks. Lamb of God is metal at its finest and any fan of metal in general should get this dvd. This was well worth the money spent and if u have not got it already get one for you and a friend

Beethoven's 2nd - movie DVD cover picture
Almost as good as the first

"Beethoven's 2nd" is a good movie, and it's a lot like the original movie. The only difference is that in this one, Beethoven finds a girlfriend and has a bunch of puppies. So George Newton (Charles Grodin) will have even more dogs to roll his eyes at this time around. The children beg their dad to let the new puppies stay until they get grown, and after awhile he agrees. However, not all is smooth sailing for Beethoven, his girlfriend, and the puppies. In ways, this movie might remind you of "101 Dalmatians" because a mean woman and her sidekick are trying to catch the puppies' mom after the woman gets a divorce from her husband, who is the owner of the dog. She might remind you of Cruella De Vil in a way. Beethoven and his family must find a way to keep their puppies and Beethoven safe, just in case the woman decides she wants them too.
Some of the best parts of the movie are when Beethoven and the family go to the carnival and he and Mr. Newton enter a hamburger eating contest, and when Beethoven rips down the complete side of a house. The movie isn't as funny as the first one was, but some parts of it were funny, and the whole movie is good. If you like good family or comedy movies, I recommend getting "Beethoven's 2nd."

Best movie I have seen in years!!!

This is a very complex, but understandable crime-violence-COMEDY movie that kept me glued to my TV for the entire time. This movie masterfully combines crime, violence, gore, and comedy into a seamless, fantastic movie. The post-production beats the Krap out of ANY $100 million movie, bar none. If you as much as own a video camera, you will appreciate what has been done with this movie. I would say if you are reading this, you like this type of movie. If you do, BUY IT! Trust me when I say you will love it as much as I do.
