A neglected masterpiece

The premise of this most unusual war film is that Britain was invaded and occupied after the Dunkirk retreat, and in a mixture of documentary and narrative styles it sets out to tell the story of the occupation that the country narrowly (some would say, unaccountably) escaped, up to and including the 'liberation', orchestrated by the efforts of local partisans with American assistance, in the war's closing year.
It is hard to believe that this film began its life as the spare-time project of 18-year-old Kevin Brownlow, a film enthusiast working in the cutting-room of a small London production company, and his 16-year-old schoolboy friend Andrew Mollo, who had a passion for military history and a collection of old German uniforms and regalia. Starting without a budget, using a borrowed 16 mm camera, the two doggedly pursued their dream of completing the project for almost eight years, finding actors, actresses, sets and backing as they went along.
This is a low-key, reflective war drama, which follows its central character, an Irish- born district nurse working in a village near Salisbury, through the horrors of a partisan ambush that goes wrong, to a chilling Nazi-dominated vision of London, where she finds herself assimilated into the highly political "Immediate Action Organization" and receives her "political re-education", on to a rural medical centre specializing in euthanasia for "undesirables", through to the final chilling irony of "liberation" and the wholesale slaughter of "collaborators".
The most famous sequence in the work is a six-minute scene in which genuine Neo- Nazis expound their ideas. The Directors were required to cut this sequence at the behest of its first distributor, United Artists, but it has now been reinstated.
I found this film disturbing, unsettling, unforgettable. The scale of the achievement involved in the creation of a work of this quality from such humble beginnings can hardly be overstated.

Awesome!

I saw this movie when I was a senior in high school. I actually saw the video first on MTV for "The Dickies". They did the theme song. And members of Anthrax had said this was their favorite movie. When I saw it I was blown away! Silly indeed, but very entertaining! The Klowns are spooky, yet mesmerizing at the same time. I bought this on video and watch every 2 or 3 years. A must have! Not along the lines of "Citizen Kane", but this is good strange fun!

Moving and fascinating

I "accidently" rec'd this video through my video club. I waited at least 3 months before I even opened it and finally while recovering from a cold I watched it. I have since watched this movie several times.
It is not a perfect movie as far as the editing and the technical aspects but the characters take your mind off anything else.
Exceptional performances from everyone which, to me, is what makes a movie work. I was fascinated by the statement, "I'm sorry, boss. I tried to take it back but it was too late." Used throughout the movie, I wasn't exactly sure to what John Coffey was referring.
My views concerning captital punishment were not changed by viewing this movie.

The Original Film with a Great Score

This is actually a new issue (for 2002) of The Iron Mask from Kino featuring a new print from the Museum of Modern Art and a score written by Carl Davis. Kevin Brownlow is one of the producers. There are two brief scenes where Douglas Fairbanks speaks to the audience that has been remastered for this version of the film. The print is flawless, and it was a pleasure to see such a loving restoration. Carl Davis does an excellent job with the score; it fits the mood of the film perfectly. Even if you have the older issue by Kino you will want to see this new edition, if nothing else, for the excellent music. Having seen the 1952 re-release of this film with spoken narration by Douglas Fairbanks Jr. I much prefer the film the way it was first presented. The narration, good as it may be, is more of a distraction and an accommodation to an audience used to sound pictures. Sorry to have to correct Amazon but Fairbanks was 46 when he made this film not 43. It had been eight years since he did The Three Musketeers.
With the many positive reviews already posted for this film all I can say is that it is well cast and acted and is a memorable farewell to the silent era by one of its brightest stars.

Monk - Season One - movie DVD cover picture
One of my favorite shows!!!

Meet Adrian Monk ( Tony Schloub). He is a man who has a countless number of phobias with being afraid of everything from heights and germs to milk. Adrian is also the greatest private detective around with a photographic memory and such a great eye for detail that it is almost creepy. As Adrian says, "it's a gift and a curse". Adrian used to be a homocide detective for the San Francisco Police Department, until his wife Trudy was killed in a car bomb. Three years have passed since, and Adrian's fears have made it impossible to be on the force. Adrian is now a private consultant for the department and assists Captain Leland Stottlemeyer ( Ted Levine) and Lieutenant Randall Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford). Also along for the ride is Monk's nurse/personal assitant Sherona Flemming ( Bitty Schram)who keeps Monk in line and helps him with each case.
If you were to describe private detective Adrian Monk, it would probably be along the lines of "Sherlock Holmes being afraid of everything". This is what makes "Monk" one of the best shows that is currently on television. It is hard to classify what type of show Monk really is. Some people including myself watch the show for the cases that Monk solves. Each case is very unpredictable and you actually have a great time trying to solve the case before Monk does. Others watch the show because it tends to be quite funny at times. Tomy Schloub is an amazing actor and is extremely versatile. He made a name for himself playing the character Antonio on the show "Wings". He brings the same comic genius to the character Adrian Monk. Bitty Schram is also brilliant as Sherona. Watching her take care of Monk is hilarious. They almost appear to be like the "Odd Couple" at times. Ted Levine and Jason Gray-Stratford are excellent as well.
Overall, "Monk" is one of my all time favorite shows. The actors involved are superb, each case is completely unpredictable, and the laughs are non stop. All I can say, is that it is about time that Monk is coming to DVD. The 13 episode first season is great from start to finish, and it deserves the DVD treatment. There is no word on what the extras will be yet, but the show is worth owning just for the episodes alone. A huge bonus is the fact that there is no commercial interruption!!

I heart The Nanny!

OMG! I can't even express the joy I felt when I saw the best television show ever made was finally available on DVD. Funny, thought provoking and hilarious. So many people I know ask how I can stand watching 10 episodes in one day and I tell them I just can't get enough of Fran Drescher's voice. Its just so adorable, how can you resist?! And her laugh! I just die when I hear it! If it were possible, I would have a reconstructive voice surgery so I could sound like her. Best.Show.Ever.
