Carnivale - The Complete First Season - movie DVD cover picture

I knew that this show was going to be incredible when I heard the buzz about it and saw the previews on television. Well, I watched it from start to finish, and it was unbelievable. This show even rivals my all-time favorites: Xena and The X-Files.
This show is very complex and could take some time to get into for the superficial viewer, but it's worth the experience, although it can be mind-boggling and horrific sometimes. The scariest episode was the one where one of the "hoochie coochie" dancers was garnered the fate of "scarlet" and killed to please the restless souls of evil men. In the end her soul was restless and only to serve as the tortured soul herself, but as the souless men's sex partner. On the last part of that episode when the head of the carnival glimpsed at the window and saw the "hoochie coochie" girl standing there as if she was beginning her fate in the eternity of being sad and then being pulles away to have sex by a souless man that scared the heck out of me.
The show I speak about above isn't the only horriffic or mind-boggling episode of this season, but one that scered me the most. their are many more. Bottomline, this show is unbelievably entertaining. A must see!

George Jones: Golden Hits - movie DVD cover picture

It is my considered belief that the three greatest musical performers of the century are: (3)TINY TIM, (2)GG ALLIN, and (1)GEORGE JONES. This video compilation is as gem from start to finish, and unlike most artists (in any genre you'd care to mention, not just music) he actually gets better as he gets older. If you're new to George, I would recommend all of his recordings, but start with anything post-1968. As a matter of fact start with this video. And while you're about it pick up everything you can get your hands on by Tiny Tim, and by GG ALLIN. Also look into George's life: he certainly has lived out his songs. UFO Set 1 - movie DVD cover picture
Got cheese?

As a kid I watched Battlestar Galactica and Space:1999 with religious zeal. Somehow I missed UFO. Now I'm glad that I did, because I get to see it for the first time, and somehow it takes me back a bunch of years. The plot is really pretty thin, and I'm sure you can almost guess the premise: earth is being attacked by flying saucers, and a super-secret agency is mandated with the protection of the planet. In the manner of the time, each of the episodes is pretty much self-contained, so the characters really never get anywhere. We never really see much of the aliens, except for a body every now and again, to know that they are humanoid, and we really don't find out if they have feelings, families or fears. Somehow this intergalactic war missed public scrutiny (like somehow no one ever notices that flying saucers are blowing up everything), so we never see the impact of the conflict on the outside world. Oh, by the way, the special effects are cheesy, even for TV. BUT - even beyond these flaws (plot, character development, production) the series is great fun to watch. Kind of like a Saturday morning cartoon on steroids - the comparison with Thunderbirds is pretty obvious. My kids enjoy them, and indeed, they are great family fun. Even the T&A is understated enough for the Sunday school teacher. So heat up some Jiffy Pop, open a Tab and have a good time with the family on Friday night.

I understand why so many people hate this movie, it is a little slow at the beginning and action fans will not be used to this. the first time i saw this i did fall aslepp but the second time i watched it i was amazed this is one of the best films ever made. The directing and acting are amazing! The people who dont like this movie are the people who only like movies that have constant action, they dont like the movies that take there time! but you'll find the best movies are the one's that take there time (e.g. pulp fiction,l.a. confidential, the usual suspects, seven etc)The movie is 5 stars the disc is 5 starsif you only by one movie this year by this!

Proves ,once again, the original is still the best .

The Robert Wise production of "The Haunting" scared me in 1963 and remains the best version of the Shirley Jackson classic story. Interestingly (to me at least), having met Mr. Wise at a screening of this film, he told me that the film that scared him as a youth was "The Cat and the Canary" from which many subsequent ghost and horror films "borrowed" techniques -the fluttering curtains, an arm reaching out to grab an unsuspecting character, etc.
Mr. Wise has crafted a genuinely suspensful and creepy film here. Check out the costuming credit for a name about to burst onto the international fashion scene shortly after the film was released. This film is almost Hitchockian in its use of camera angles and suggestion rather than graphic depictions of what is scaring us. It works very well-the recent remake is all special effects and almost no atmosphere. Black and white can convey terror in a way color can't. Julie Harris and Claire Bloom are perfectly cast.

Not overrated, a terrific movie with great performances

Magnificent performances by Hunt, Nicholson & Kinnear. Should have been three oscars. Even Verdel was amusing. You got to listen closely because the lines come fast & furious. Laughed until I nearly cried & best thing is - I don't like Jack Nicholson but he was stupendous. Another of my all time favourites.

The New Swiss Family Robinson

This movie contains a nice balance between action on the one hand and the human relationships between the members of the family and the young native girl on the other. The translation to modern times is quite believable, and the questionable elements of the story--for example, how to get them stuck on the island--are handled more convincingly than the usual storm-at-sea. The bad guys are not cliche pirates, as in the older versions, but smugglers. And there's a nice touch in that the leader has pretended to be their friend and has set them up. The silliness of the Disney version is completely absent here, nor are any of the kids brats. Nor does this film have the unrelenting oppressiveness of another film version entitled "Stranded", a film which were better titled "Dysfunctional Family Robinson." All in all, a pleasant, interesting film with good music, good scenery and good characters that will leave you with an optimistic feeling at the end.

A note on the cover: Cover artists are truly clever. This picture of Anne Seymour is the ONLY one in the entire film in which she is not beautiful. The artist chose this one! This film is much, much better than its cover.

In Defense of "Tenenbaum" - Comedy doesn't always = laughs

After viewing the film "The Royal Tenenbaums" I left the theater in an odd state of mind. And after digesting the film a little while, something one MUST do after watching a Wes Anderson/Owen Wilson film, I've concluded it as the best comedy of the year and one of the top five films of the year (and the same thing happend when I viewed the film "Rushmore" a few years earlier). Then I decided to check what other people thought of the film and came onto to read people's reviews. I was very distraught with what I read, not so much because people disliked the film (some people, I should not lump ALL people in this category; there are SOME innovative filmgoers amongst you all) but because of why they didn't. People complained that there were no laughs to be had. Granted, there are not belly laughs and guffaws to be had at "Tenenbaums," but this should be expected considering how "Rushmore" was set up and executed. Wes Anderson and his writing partner do not go for the cheap laughs and the slapstick sight gags that make so many current movies the cheap, raunch fare that they are. Being a writer myself I've come to realize that there is much more to comedy than making a person jiggle with laughter. In fact, no where in the definition of the term "comedy" is the word "laugh" used. Comedy deals with a general feeling it bestows upon an audience member. One of humor and affection (be it dark or otherwise).
Anyway, to get back to the point, "The Royal Tenenbaums" is solely structured on giving off a feeling of comedy while also playing for more psychological and emotional connections with it's audience. I will openly admit I laughed outloud less than ten times throughout the film (although when I did laugh, it was very well deserved). I did, however, have a smile on my face throughout the ENTIRE thing. And that's what comedy, at least one designed like this one, is meant to do. I commend Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson for making such a remarkably structured film and reccommend it to anyone who has the desire to see the "Thinking Man's Comedy."
