X-Men - movie DVD cover picture

I just saw this movie and I must say that it was great. Whether you are a huge fan of the Marvel Comics (like my cousin) or just watched the afternoon animated series (like me) or even if you didn't know what an X-Man was (like my sister) you will still walk away loving this movie.
What is really great about this movie is that it is appropriate for children. Sure it does have some cursing and a really funny part where Wolverine gives Cyclopes the "bird" but I'm sure that most kids old enough to understand the movie have already heard and seen worse than that.
For those that want to know what demographic I fall under, I am a 24 year old female.

Superb movie making about a very sensitive topic

Costa-Gavras's "Missing" is compelling from beginning to end. The way the movie slowly unravels revealing the events that lead to the execution of Charles Horman, is exceptionally well done.
There is a great deal of suspense, which keeps the audience on the edge of its seat throughout, however, what makes "Missing" an unforgettable movie, is how the frightening experience of a coup was so well presented. The military's absolute control over the fate of many innocent civilians, produced a terrifying feeling. The atmosphere of the coup was handled with great care by the director.
Jack Lemmon's performance as Horman's conservative father was truly convincing and Sissy Spacek was equally brilliant. The changes that occurred in the relationship between the two characters as the plot developed, added great depth to the issues the movie was considering.
"Missing" is one of the most important moves made of this genre and is a must see for anyone wishing to understand the politics of this region.

A classic screwball comedy...

The Awful Truth is one of my all-time favorite movies! It is an absolutely hilarious screwball comedy. Essentially, The Awful Truth is the story of Jerry (Cary Grant) and Lucy (Irene Dunne) Warriner: a rich, elegant couple that decides to get a divorce. The only problem is that they clearly still love each other. As they respectively figure this out, they do their best to sabotage each others' relationships - resulting in incredibly funny scenes.
The Awful Truth has witty dialogue in the classic screwball style, hilarious situations, and great acting. Cary Grant is wonderful as the confident and charming husband - his facial expressions and muttered comments steal scene after scene. This movie is the first one in which Grant established his extraordinary screeen persona: a handsome, intelligent, and debonair man - and still a comedian more than willing to take a few pratfalls. His inspired performance makes the film work! Irene Dunne is equally excellent as his beautiful wife. She is the perfect, cool counterpart to Grant's often frantic behavior. The supporting cast also gets full honors.
Overall, this movie is excellent, and can be watched over and over again. It is witty and hilarious: perfect for the whole family! I don't know how else to recommend this - get this movie, and enjoy a priceless screwball comedy from Hollywood's Golden Age.

The Good Thief - movie DVD cover picture

Set in the beautiful and panoramic hills of the South of France, THE GOOD THIEF is an intriguing remake of the 1955 French film noir classic BOB LE FLAMBEUR. Bob Montagnet (Nick Nolte), a gambler and drug addict down on his luck and fortune, assembles a crew to pull off a casino heist while deceiving the French police, in particular Roger (Tcheky Keryo) who has been given a tip of Montagnet's plans. Seeking refuge from her pimp, Anne (Nutsa Kukhianidze) helps Montagnet get clean while simultaneously trying to seduce him with her stunning body and youthful charm. In THE GOOD THIEF Nolte delivers an impressive performance that makes one believe that he remains true to his form. The viewer trusts his characterization of a strung-out gambler and his pain is well detailed across his persona. To top it off, Nolte throws in some laughs and is creative in his interactions with Roger, the member of the French police who is insistently following him. The cinematography is original and inventive as end of scenes are frequently met with a freeze of the last frame. It's jolting but at the same time it peaks interest in the film. Scenes of backroom gambling in addition to the utilization of primary, bold colors throughout this film creates an effective portrayal of the underbelly of this often-cited glamorous geographical location of Europe. Overall, THE GOOD THIEF is a bold and original film that rightly deserves recent critical acclaim. I fully recommend this film.

The psychology of duty, fear, and a Western

Often said to be the best Western ever, High Noon is also about duty (part of the "men's code" of honor), fear, abandonment (to the violent ones), and nonviolence (Grace Kelly's Quaker roots). Everyone in the movie makes understandable choices--and Gary Cooper is left alone to face 4 gunslingers after him.
One of the best actors in the movie is Katy Jurado, who plays a Hisanpic business owner. What ever happened to her?
You'll love this movie.

Better than the original!

I thought the original Parent Trap was excellent, but this new updated version is so much better. I cannot believe the twins are played by one person. It looks so believable. I thought I wouldn't enjoy this movie, but then I found myself watching it over and over. A great film overall.

Ron White - They Call Me Tater Salad - movie DVD cover picture

After seeing a portion of this show on cable, I immediately ordered the DVD. I've watched it at least 4 times now and I STILL laugh so hard I cry. Maybe it was the years I spent in Texas with guys who sound and act so much like Ron, or maybe it's just because the guy nails his humor with a combination of tone and facial expressions that just kill. I'm now buying more copies to give as gifts. It's something I just can't wait to share.
