X, for x-treme, rated.

This one has James Bond written all over it. James Bond, Grunge style. Acting takes a backseat to some of the best stunts and special effects I've seen in a very long time. The story has Vin as Xander Cage. Cage is recruited from humanities' bottom-of-the-barrel by the NSA (National Security Agency) to infiltrate a group of Russian terrorists known as Anarchy 99. Xander has two talents. He is accomplished at x-treme sports and he has no fear of death. Perfect, according to Samuel L. Jackson, NSA's operative controller. The plot is as predictable as any 007 movies you have ever seen. But who cares! With more explosions, techno-gadgets, cars, motorcycles, and bullets than you can shake your Goldfinger at; XXX is 007 at the edge of the envelope. Recommended. Cammy Diaz A @ L

Spectacularly Atmospheric

I don't think that anyone could portray so many characters and be as versatile as Johnny Depp. Aside from the superb acting, this has to be one of the most beautifully unusual screenplays ever written, and Tim Burton does it justice. For anyone who likes the ART of film, Edward Sissorhands is a must see!

Singin' in the Rain - movie DVD cover picture
The Citizen Kane of musicals

So many films in my collection are "important", "serious", "disturbing", or "great", and as much as I treasure them (films like Citizen Kane, Vertigo, and Ran), there is only so much self-importance a person can take before the pores fairly scream out for something just plain fun; something slight, buoyant, silly, and full of energy. Singin' in the Rain is just that kind of movie. The funny part is, I generally HATE musicals!
In 1951, Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen took a collection of songs by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown and - assisted by a pitch-perfect screenplay from the writing team of Adolph Green and Betty Comden - sculpted one of the great classic fusions of popular cinematic art and precision dance craft. It is the Citizen Kane of musicals: a virtual catalog of musical film technique, executed flawlessly.
But that alone would not be enough to separate Singin' in the Rain from the kind of musical I can't stand (which is to say, just about every other musical ever made). No, what makes this one special is that it knows what it is and celebrates it. It never for a moment asks you to forget you're watching a movie and then grinds to a screeching halt for the musical number. Instead, it deconstructs itself before your very eyes (and ears) as a razor-sharp, self-aware satire of the movie industry - as well as a joyous expression of the pure ecstasy of great song and dance. In that sense, it is one of the few so-called musicals that actually achieves a genuine symbiosis of drama, music, and kinetic performance art.
If all this sounds rather gushing and pretentious, so be it. This is great film-making. It is Rolex Oyster Perpetual film-making. This DVD edition sparkles with ultra-saturated colors, digitally remixed Dolby 5.1 sound, and some terrific extras (even if you're not particularly into musicals).
My favorite sequence is the eerily fluid dance work between Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse against a Dali-esque background near the end of the film. Charisse is spellbinding as she trails a gravity-defying veil that must be 30 feet long. It hangs in the air, suspended by wind machines as she uses her extraordinary dance skill (and fantastic legs) to affect a wordless seduction of Kelly's naive, love-struck hero. Great stuff.
Even if you don't think of yourself as the "musical type", give Singin' in the Rain a try. After all that heavy, bitter, existential cinema, it makes one helluva fine dessert.

Epic Anime Masterpiece

This sweeping anime epic follows an aging actress as she tells the story of her life to two documentary filmmakers. This films storyline is not linear so any synopsis would not due it justice. Needless to say if you are a fan of Anime.. Not just the fanboy or mecha anime but gorgeous animation with mature themes and stories. You will be blown away by this film. Even if anime is not your cup of tea, the sophistaced story will awaken you to the fact that animation is not just for kids anymore. Easily one of the best films I have seen this past year.

Powerpuff ariffic

Don't get me wrong, the Powerpuff girls is rated Y7 on tv but even kids from 2 to 92 watch this show. IT is one of the coolest shows on television (besides wrestling) and one fact is that there is no profanity in the cartoon like South Park or crude behavior like The Simpsons. This show mainly talks about six year old superheroes, and if there were more like that, then this world would be a better place. I give all powerpuff videos 1,000,000 stars because the cartoon is so cute and it is entertaining. My personal favorite Powerpuff episode is the one where the Gangrene gang are new students in the kindergarten class of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. THis episode is so funny that I give it 2,000,000 stars and I wouldn't mind owning that one.

Moonraker - movie DVD cover picture
A Bond for All Seasons

When I first saw this film I remember that it really broke my heart. I grew up in the 60s on James Bond and Sean Connery amongst others. The first 45 minutes of "Moonraker" was the closest that the Roger Moore Bonds had ever come to the look and feel of the James Bond films of the 60s. It was really incredible. Equally incredible was how the film did a flip-flop into slapstick when Bond is floating down that canal in Venice. As the film progressed the level of slapstick escalated. It was just plain out ridicules. The film was very annoying.
I thought Roger Moore had finally combined his best qualities as a personality and an actor to represent James Bond in this film. His scene in the centrifuge showed his ability to bring depth to the character in a very credible way. This one scene is a standout because it equals any performance given by any of the actors that have portrayed James Bond in this series. Christopher Wood, given sole screenplay credit this time, delivered a script full of witty dialogue. The free-fall pre-credit sequence with John Barry's background score, incredible stunt work and cinematography was excellent. With so many fine elements at their peak of perfection it was a shame that the film unraveled in so many different directions.
When I saw this film on opening day I remembered how the whole lobby was crammed with people. As I sat during the film I remember a little boy who was sitting in front of me turn around and look at his father. "Daddy I really like this movie." I never forgot that. It took me about 10 years to understand what this film was really all about. The Bond films have been around for almost 40 years now. I suppose with each decade another generation of Bond fans is born. Each generation takes with them the fond memories of their introduction to James Bond. Each generation savors the moment and no matter what I or anyone else says is going to erase those memories. The magic of "Moonraker" is that it contains the best to the worst, or the worst to the best, of all the elements found in the series. There is something in "Moonraker" for everyone.

Best of the Series

I love every season of SG1, but season 2 was hands down the best. The thing that makes SG1 better than all other SciFi is continuity. The story lines are far reaching and many of the best story lines started in Season. In fact, I am looking at the episodes of season 2 and I believe every single on is contunued or refered to in future episodes. What an amazing series from just an OK movie.
