Xena rules!

I couldn't wait for Xena to be released on DVD and especially the entire season in package form. I was not disappointed at all. I had purchased ten of the first episodes from another supplier and the problem with picture quality was about the same. But this edition is far better. The sound quality is excellent, and the disc display is wonderful. So I say, if you want Xena...buy this. It's wonderful.

Where is this guy?

Why hasn't Christopher Scott Cherot acted since Hav Plenty? He is amazing in this film. I need more of that sarcastic, I don't care if you like me or not attitude. And the film itself is amazing. It is the first to manage to portray affluent blacks in a vast array. The characters reflect dignity. Sure there's some snobbishness, but it's discouraged throughout. The reluctant romance between Haviland and Lee are kept central, but humor dominates the film. Cherot is downright outrages. Chenoa Maxwell is a perfect cold-blooded stiff and Robinne Lee somehow manages to downplay her stunning beauty enough to pull of the little sister role. It's the characters and the dialogue, not a big budget that make this a must own. No clowny, cartoony buffoonery going on. It's just how we are. Colorfully diverse black people.

Excellent!

the video/dvd expands ever so much on actually viewing it in the theatre! i was in awe of the show; it had me on my feet on 3 seperate occasions. now, with the video version, i was able to really marvel at the make-up, costumes, and breathtaking choreography. also, all the cast members assembled here reads like the best of... can anyone else ever perform "memory" as heart-rending as elaine paige does here? or ken page as old deuteronomy inviting all to the heaviside layer! a great souvenir of this classic musical that truly stands on it's own wether or not one has seen the show. i heartily recommend it to theatrelovers of all ages. i guarantee 2 hours of sheer delight.

Casablanca - movie DVD cover picture
Study at Rick's School of Management and Behavioral Science

For me, the intriguing story of _Casablanca_ is not the story of Rick and Ilsa trapped between the reality of their present and the memory of their past.
No, the truly interesting story of _Casablanca_ is that which is revealed in the DVD's supplementary documentary, _You Must Remember This_. The creation of this true work of art in an environment dedicated to the mass production of films gives hope to every artist who's had to perform commercially. Indeed, one almost comes away from a behind-the-scenes exploration of _Casablanca_ with an actual appreciation of the way in which deadlines and pressure can help the artist make a better product.
_You Must Remember This_ is thus useful for its display of the whole "studio system" era in Hollywood. It gives a good glimpse into that time and could serve as a useful jumping-off point to anyone seriously studying the subject.
Likewise, the way in which the film's producers and director led the project is a fascinating exploration of management science. The film became legendary, I think, because the people at the top allowed great flexibility for those they led, and weren't afraid to play around with ideas offered even on the studio floor. I think MBA candidates would do well to look at the way this film was put together for enlightenment.
Still, I can't resist talking about the film itself. For me _Casablanca_ is the legend I return to in my own mind whenever there are romantic crises in my life. I think that part of the reason that this movie has survived is because it offers a unique perspective on romantic disappointment. Instead of concluding with scorn or hatred of partners who've left one hanging, it says that people can have noble reasons for causing pain. It also says that ultimately pain is eased when one achieves understanding of the other person. I'm not sure that any major American film gives such a positive spin to heartbreak as this one.
It's thus not at all hard for me to recommend the DVD version of this product, for the excellent supplementary documentary alone, and the movie itself, for the surprising values it discovers in the heart of a morally ambiguous Morocco.

GREAT MOVIE! HOPE A DVD UPGRADE IS IN THE WORKS.

MARTIN SCORSESE'S GOODFELLAS IN MY OPINION IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES EVER. BUT THE DVD WAS GIVIN' ONE OF THE WORST TREATMENTS. I BECOME APPALLED WHEN I'M WRAPPED UP IN A HELLA GREAT MOVIE LIKE "GOODFELLAS" AND I'M INTERRUPTED BY HAVING TO FLIP THE DVD LIKE SOME 1980's LASER DISC. I AM SURE THAT A SERIOUS UPGRADE IS COMING SOON. NOW ABOUT THE FILM ITSELF... IT WAS NOMINATED FOR BEST PICTURE IN 1990. GOODFELLAS IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES... GREAT PERFORMANCES ARE ALWAYS FOUND IN A SCORSESE'S PICTURE, NO EXCEPTIONS HERE. ROBERT DE NIRO, JOE PESCI & RAY LIOTTA ARE THE LEADS AND THEY ARE ALL IN TOP FORM. THE SUPPORTING PERFORMANCES BY LORRIANE BRACCO & PAUL SORVINO ARE ALSO VERY CREDITABLE. SAYING THE LEAST "GOODFELLAS" IS THE BEST MOB MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN! SO WITH THAT BEING SAID, I SUPPOSE THIS DVD WILL DO FOR NOW. SOME REVIEWERS HAVE REDUCED THE AMOUNT OF STARS BASED ON (HAVING TO FLIP THE DVD). SCORSESE'S FILM IS A LEAGUE ABOVE PERFECTION AND SHOULD NOT HAVE IT'S AVERAGE LOWERED BASED ON PACKAGING OR POOR CHOICES ON HOW THE DVD WAS DESIGNED.

One of the best preschool videos

Blue's Clues (with Steve) is my 3 year old daughter's favorite show. We were very excited when the DVD finally arrived and we sat down all together to watch the movie. Unfortunately, all the way through the movie there were very annoying interferences due to manufacturer's disc defects. The DVD signal would disappear throughout the movie and a regular TV program would come on for 1-2 minutes instead. The most unfortunate moment was in the end, when Steve finally lands on his thinking chair with all 3 clues in his hands. The whole episode was erased from the DVD. We returned the DVD back (...) and received a replacement - the same story!! And the same spots on DVD were damaged. Desperate and determined to show my daughter the whole movie, I finally purchased a copy from our local video store. Guess what... it was damaged in the same very spots as the two previous bad copies (...)! I exchanged it again -- and received another bad copy with the same exact damage!!!
However, to give credit to the movie creators, my daughter still was watching it at least 2-3 times daily, this is how much she loved whatever she could see. We received an apology (...) and advice from the local video store to contact the manufacturer directly for a good copy. (...)
Maybe the movie itself deserves a much better rating, but when you are unable to watch it without constant interruptions, natural frustration takes over and there is no enjoyment and no point in bothering to put it on. What a waste of time and money.

The Rocketeer - movie DVD cover picture
One Of Disney's Best Action Films. More Character Development Would've Been Nice, Though.

Walt Disney's "The Rocketeer," based on the graphic novel by Dave Stevens, is a very well-made action-packed thriller. Featuring then-little-known Jennifer Connelly (who made her film debut as a cute little girl in Sergio "The Man With No Name Trilogy" Leone's "Once Upon A Time In America") and two-time James Bond Timothy Dalton ("The Living Daylights" and "Licence To Kill;" see my review on them), the film centers on out-of-work pilot Cliff Secord (Bill Campbell) trying to handle his woes and his actress girlfriend (Jennifer Connelly) when all of a sudden, his life takes a startling turn. That's all the plot detail you'll get from me. The performances in this film are excellent, from Campbell as the titular character, the always beautiful and reliable Jennifer Connelly and Timothy Dalton. Great score too.

Walt Disney Pictures knows how to make a good action movie for kids and adults, as the violence is enough to keep adults interested and at the same time, non-graphic for the kids. However, I HAVE to say something, with profound apologies to Walt Disney Pictures if I offend them in any way, as I completely enjoy their movies. One part of a scene had me thinking "This is starting to look a bit like a porn movie," though I knew that Disney wouldn't even attempt something so outrageous, which would tarnish their family-friendly image, so firmly established by Walt Disney himself almost 100 years ago. I can handle it, but just thought I'd point this out, in case young kids are interested in seeing this action-adventure film. Rated PG for some violence and mild language.

Brilliantly funny!

Chris Rock plays politically inept New York alderman Mays Gilliam, who cares about his constituents. After saving an older lady from being blown up during the demolition of her former home, he is hailed as a hero. Soon he is targeted as a potential presidential candidate who is intended to lose the election.
Initially Mays follows the recommendations of his campaign advisors, but he doesn't care for the style of the campaign and soon strikes out on his own, with predictable disastrous results. After talking with his brother Mitch (Bernie Mac) Mays returns to a more sincere style, eventually kicking the ... of the current Vice President, who is favored to win the next election, during a televised debate.
Some of the humor works really well, even the repetitive scenes, such as the appearance by Mays' former girlfriend throughout the movie. However, for the most part the plot is a vehicle for Chris to perform various standup routines, and it's obvious that they are standup routines because of how they are filmed. While I found myself laughing in several places, this isn't a film I can recommend, nor would I care to watch it again.
